Bradley Bros, (20c) LENA WILSON HAS FORTY NEW GOWNS AS "BRIBE-T0-BE" Canadian Girl, Who Will Wed "Bud" Stillman, Outfitted ININE FUR COATS Hats and Gowns are De- scribed in Detail--Likes Small Hats New York, July 26.--T.ena Wil- son left Canada 'with the plain wardrobe of a simple child of the woods who gave little thought to what she wore because of neces- sarily limited spending powers, She goes back to hecome the bride of "Bud" Stillman with trunks full of finery such as a so- ciety belle takes for granted. Forty new frocks, dozens of hats, nine fur coats, and stocks of fra- gile French lingerie from - New York's smartest shops have trans- formed her, Lena has learned to dress, as the wife of a millionaire with a house on Park avenue should dress. And yet, throughout her trousseau, for which she was al- lowed free choice and a geperous checking account from her rich parents-in-law-to-be, there is evi- dence of her simple naturalness. There is almost a woodland motif throughout, Green Velvet i One green velvet coat which she purchased, reminded her one is sure, of her woodland home, for it is just that deep, mossy green that one finds in a cool, quiet for- est, There is a chiffon evening frock just the color of moonlight, and another the color of flaming sum just before it actually flops down behind the horizon. Many sport frocks have wide handkerchiefs scarfs, which she now ties in the Deauville fashion on the shoulder rather than knot- ted in front as she used to with the bandanna kerchiefs that pep- ped up her jersey frocks. There's a sophisticated simplie- ity about the clothes she sepected, showing: she has made her first hurdle in becoming a New Yorker. For Evening--Chiffon For evening most of her dresses are of chiffon, in bright colors-- green, red, blue, as well as in made entirely of the material white. These are all very simple, with hankerchief points and com- plicated cuts to give the popular full swing to the skirts. For day she has a dozen dress- es, all of the same type, that con- fist of pleated skirts with over- blouses, some embroidered and some plain, with little coatees to match. All have long sleeves, and Kknee- length skirts. These are im all colors. For afternoon she selected foul- ards and printed crepe de chine, many of them made the same style. Her favorite model had a simple V neck, revealing a chem- isette of Valenciennes lace, aml a skirt. with several ruffles arranged in points, and the simplest of sash closing. In millinery Lena's taste is very similar to that of Mrs. Stillman's. She. likes little close "aviator" hats, which she wears off her forehead, but very low over her ears. He hats are mostly these simple felts, to match all her frocks, made on her head so that they fit in the perfect French fa- shion. She included a brim or so, but very small omnes--ilena Write Box 353 Bowmanville or tele- THERE WILL BE SOLD BY AUC- tion on Saturday, July 30th, house and three acres of land, the property of C. A. Not according to English visitors to the Dominion who fre- quently comment upon the pre- valence of "Irishisms'" and the firm grip whieh they seem to have upon the speech of the country. Even well educated Canadians, they say get into difficulties with those tricky little words, "shall" and "will," misplacing them with fine abandon. This particular straying from the standards of academic English is characteristically Irish and is common among the Scotch, An Englishman is often surpris- ed when, on asking the hour, he is informed hy a Canadian that it is "half-after-four," instead of half-past, that idiom being native to Erin, He also remarks in Can- ada the stressed, often rolled *r" and the prevalence of closed vow- el sounds. Of course, Irish and Scotch immigrants have played as large a part in the development of Canada as have those from Eng- land and it is only natural that they should have made their mark upon Canada's everyday speech, Visitors from this country de- precate the addiction of Canadians to American slang, but Canadian | philologists maintain thht this is a merely superficial phenomena and that the invasion of colloquialisms from the south is mot permanently affecting the speech of cultured Canadians. Philologists can do lit- For Your PHONE 22 Dr: weet Thompson's Drug Store 10 Simcoe S¢, 8, We Deliver tle to direct the development of a! language. © Transplanted to a new continent, English is inevitably ac-| quiring new characteristics. A Billowing Train Instead of a long satin train Mrs. Stillman decided on a Jong train of tulle whieh will fall billows and envelop the bride a cloud of foamy white. Her wed- ding veil is a circular veil of net edged in real duchess lace. The centre of this is placed over her sleek little bobbed head, and a keep it in place. This veil ar- rangement is Mrs. Stillman's orig- inal Idea. The train is picoted in . silver, and little streamers of silver rib- bon fall from the shoulder of her frock and get lost im the tulle train like gleams of silver moon- light. For two months practically all the hundred seamstresses at Henri Bendel's have been working on Lena's trogssean--and they were all remembered with a gift. She won all their hearts with her de- lightfully simple ways and her real appreciation of every effort in her behalf and they are lavish in their praise of her. She Likes Lena apparently has Mrs. Still- man's taste in jewelry, for she wears many bracelets, of the wide, heavy. tyge, and she wears most fre- quently a mecklace made of heavy gold chain.
