EDUCATION BOARD 70 NEET THURSDAY. Chairman Favors Opening "School September 6--To Open Coal Coal Tenders PEE T B TB. Mitchell of the Oshawa Board of tion favors the: move , to open chools on ay, tember 6," Instead of om Thursday, September; 1, and states that the matter will, be up for ae- tion at Thursday night's 'meeting of the Trust at RHEE ae timd, Mr. Mitchell declares that the school lear has too many holidays and would welcome any well thought ougischeme for re- ducing the Schoal year of only 200 days or less is, in his opinion, entirely inefficient when compared with the great sums invested by the eitizns of Qshawa, to: say nothing of the Province in geheral, in their school plants. It is pointed out' that summer holidays for children were never established" as a matter of health protection, In pioneer days every child able to attend school was also able to help during the busy enltivation season on Ontario's firat farms. This brought about the long summer vacation, which is now perpetuat in cities where the original reason nat only fails to apply but has heen forgotten. 'enders _ for coal supplies for Oshawa's #thool system will be pre- sented to the Board. Thursday night and, probably, the contract or com- tracts will be let, K ING MIOHART, I, OF RUMANIA LUMBIA UNIVERSITY Bucharest, Rumania, July 28.-- King Michael's first official tele- gM, © transmitted throngh his mother today, was addressed to Prof, Clarence Manning of Colum- bia University. The hurricane capsized the gom- dola when half way across, throw- ing her, the gondolier and a small Pomeranian g into the water. Only the dog gained the shore of the island and Franciscan monks found the dog on Sunday wander- ing on the beach whining, Later in the day the bodies of Mrs, Macy and the gomndolier were washed ashore, Known fondly as "Etta," the Boston sculptress, newspaper cor- spondent and eharity-worker was oved as a heroine by all Venice. Religious Scheme on Vancou- ver Island Proves Not Self-Sustaining Victoria, B.C,, July 27.--A re- ligious community scheme finally collapsed here Monday with the sale of the holdings at Sooke, Van- couver Island, of the "Standfast Bible Students," to a syndicate of Sooke and Victoria people. The holdings consisted of 80 acres of cleared and partially cleared land, 30 community factory and office buildings, a stretch of harbor water frontage and scores of partially fished homesites, * repiesenting an investment of nearly $250,000. The community members held all property in common and the or- ganization was formed shortly after the war by families from the Canadian prairie provinces and northern United States, They sold all their property at home and came here by train loads, establishing themselves in this vi- cinity until they moved to Sooke. A religious hall and eerything ne- cessary for community life, includ- ing a modern laundry, were built. They built a cheese factory and the Government financed them in a fish reduction plant. All mon- ey matters were registered by a central council, Two years ago there were three hundred members of the communi- ty, and converts came in encour- aged by reports that an ideal ex- istence with no worries was to be found. When incoming money be- gan to fall off it was found the community was not financially self-sustaining. The Government gave them a chance to operate the box factory at Port Renfrew but they were unable to make it a suc- cess, Members began to leave and a number of families were left more San Juan valley, attempting to live off honey. Now only about a dozen members remain, waiting for for something to do elsewhere. BRITISH CRUISER VISITS VANCOUVER Victoria, B.C., July 27.--Ae- companied by H.M.C.S.
