C'S EARLY WEDDINGS "Marriage Boats" Brought Wives by the Fog in From England Less Than 70 Years Ago. (By Canadian' Press) Victoria, B.C., Aug. 16.--While there does not séem to be any short- age of wives in the British Columbia capital today, less than 70 years ago the supply was so far beneath th, demand that brides were im- ported by the shipload from Eng- land and assigned to the lonely bachelors of the island hy the loeal authorities Speaking - recently before the Canadian Club on some of the odd aspects of pioneer life in the Prov- ince, Justice Denis Murphy describ- ed the arrival of the first of these "marriage boats," in 1862, The lit- tle port town was all agoeg on the long awaited day. Women were few and far hetween on the Pacifie coast and the prospect of seeing them enmasse caused many a husky male heart to flutter. Farmers and iners deserted their ploneer labors and headed for the town, Long hefore the ship appear- ed in the harbor the quays were lined with eager, if somewhat sheepish, citizens, It is not reported whether the venturesome ladies who dared an unknown country and unknown hus- hand on this occasion were over- ¢ome with bashfulness as they filed hetween ranks of wife-hunters. While many of the im- ported wives were past the first blush of youth and many more would have been rank failures in any beauty contest, they all look- ed good to the lonely island bach- elors and when the great business of arranging whe should marry who was settled, not one old maid was left to mourn her fate. Since that day Victoria has been the scene of many society weddings which have been widely heralded and accorded columns in the press, but the great civic wedding day which followed the docking of this vessel still holds the record as an event of local interest. The few Victoria padres were overworked and rings were at a premium. As the early settlers were addicted to heavy knee boots, the custom of throwing old footwear at the happy brides and grooms was fortunately abandoned arid a shortage of rice in the colony obviated another popular amusement connected with the ceremony. Of course some of the marriages contracted under these unique con- ditions failed to result in domes- tc harmony and ended in dismal failure, the wives regretting the se- paration from their friends in Eng- land and the urban life to which they had heen raised and the hus- bands yearning for solitude among the wild and silent hills, Other of the unions, however, proved highly successful and descen- dants of these are today numerous among the island population. In- deed the government was so pleas- ed with the result of their experi ment that they repeated it in 1868, with a like measure of success. From that date it has not been necessary to bring wives to Victoria in wholesale lots. If a resident doesn't find one to suit his taste on the Island he goes travelling to the less favored shores beyond the sound and there chooses his wife without gaverpment ald, FERGUSON SEEN AS FEDERAL CHIEF Ontario Premier's Name Leads All Others as Conservafive Leader Ottawa, Aug. 15--Notwithstanding Premier Ferguson's repeated statement that he is not in Dominion politics, Conservative politicians throughout Canada are hopeful that he smay be induced to accept the Federal leader- ship of the party at the national con- vention to be held in Winnipeg com- mencing on October 11. The papers learn on excellent authority that Mr. Ferguson is favored above all other possible contenders. And, while the impression prevails among his col- leagues in the Ontario Cabinet that he will not desert the Provincial field, there is, according to one of his most intimate friends, an important factor to be considered. That factor is that "Mr. Ferguson dearly loves a fight." The Ontario Premier's colleagues, while hoping he will remain at Queen's Park, admit there is danger of his consenting to go to Ottawa if he is convinced there is a fairly unanimous desire that he should throw his hat into the Federal arena. To Sound All Provinces Major-General A. D. McRae, M.P. for Vancouver, who has met with considerable success in organizing the convention, today denied the rumor that he was a candidate for the lea- dership of the party. He also indicat- ed that names of prominent Conserva- tives in every Province will be put forward at the convention in order that the views of all sections of the country may be voiced. From Prince Edward Island, Hon. P. M. Stewart is expected to take a leading part, while from Nova Scotia and New Brunswick Hon. E. N. thodes, Hon. Gordon Harrington and Hon. J. B. M. Baxter will go to Win- nipeg. Quebec will send Sir George Perley, Hon. E. L. Patenaude, C. H. Cahan and J. L. Saint-Jacques. Prominent among the Ontario dele- gation will be Hon. G. Howard Fergu- son, Rt. Hon. Arthur Meighen, Sir Thomas White, Sir Henry Drayton, Hon. Hugh Guthrie, Hon. Dr. R. J. Manion, Hon. Senator Gideon Robert- son and Charles A. Magrath, Chair- man of the Ontario HydroElectric Power Commission. The principal de- legates from' Manitoba will be Hon. Robert Rogers, Major Taylor, M.P.P., amd John T. Haig, M.P.P. M.A. Mac. B. Bennett will be the leading delegate from Al- berta and Hon. H. H. Stevens and Major-General McRae will go from British Columbia, Ferguson or Bennett In the event of Premier Ferguson absolutely refusing to consider the honor an attempt will be made to in- duce Mr. Bennett to assume the lead- ership. Should he decline there is some talk of a leader being secured who is not now in Federal politics, and the name of Colonel Gordon Har- rington, a member of the Nova Scotia Cabinet, is prominently mentioned in this connection. Mr. Harrington had a good war record. It is claimed by those in close touch with the situa- tion that while Hon. Bob Rogers has heen moving about the country there is not a single instance where dele- gates have been definitely pledged to support a particular candidate for the leadership. The proposal of the organizers is that nominations shall he made on the first day of the gathering, but that the balloting shall not take place until the final day. Meanwhile the delegates will have an opportunity of hearing the speeches of those nominated, and of considering the merits of any propos- als they may make regarding the fu- ture policy of the party.
