The gentleman from Holland is a globe trotter and apparently he .ikes it for his wanderings in the past have occupied five years and his proposed hikes will demand another period of at least six years. Since leaving the land of dikes and wind- mills van des Basselaar has trayel- led 16,000 miles and now knows | Europe from the first hand knowl- | edge of one who has trudged through rural and urban districts. Prior to 1925 the wandering Dutchman toured in European countries and spent considerable time in the land of Mussolini and escaped without sucenmbing to the Fascist influ- ence, It is almost two years since Van arrived in Canada, During that time he has been wandering about in Quebec and Ontario accompanied by a large Airedale with an un- sign which rustles in the breeze from the back of Van's pack an- nounces that he is bound from Hali- fax to San Francisco via New York. And that is exaetly th» trip that he proposes making. Ouly af- ter completing that journey he will continue on into Mexico finally | reaching South America. When he | has seen considerable of the silver and gold country in the south he will hasten to Asia or at least to what may be left of it after our Chinese frie.ds get through muck- ing things um, After having made the acquaintance of the princes of Siam, the rulers of India and the grand Caliphs in Persia he will turn his footsteps homeward to Holland there to settle down near the Zuyder Zee with some coy young Dutch maiden with golden tresses and basswood shoes. Mr. van den Basselaar wears a red cross on his arm and it in- dicates that he is trained to remder first aid to whoever he finds 'm- jured during his travels. He has received credentials from the Cana- dian Red Cross Society and already has treated 742 persons whom he has found hurt. (By a Stagg ) Whitby, Aug. 20--*Goodbye" said Berpard van den Basselaar, Boy Scout of Amsterdam to his mother. I'm going for a little walk. I'll be back for tea in 1935," That was in 1923. He has been walking ever since and says he expects to be up- wards of seven years more in reach- ing his starting point again. York. From there he ntends to go to California, Mexico, South America, Austral- ja, China and Japan. y He is ome, hiker who hikes hom- estly. With a thirty pound pack on his back he covers about thinty miles towns through which he " is understood that he jis a job as postman.
