VICTIMS FINANCAL 2h i PL WILL NOT SUFFER Two Finance Companies In: volved Protected by Bonds Picton, Aug. 21.--Though the to- tal amount of the Raynor bankrupt- cy is sald to reach $300,000 being the largest in the history of the county, there are few cases of ex- treme hardship caused by the crash, the bulk of the money was owing to the Commercial Finance Corpora- tion, to another financial company and to A, P, Hyatt, Two of these, are protected hy bonds, and A, P, Hyatt, while he will undoubtedly lose heavily, has no tale of woe to tell Refusing to be interviewed hy newspapermen, he yet added: "I haven't any kick coming," and Clif- ford Raynor, the accused's brother, declared that in the long run he will not lpse a cent, It is said that $100,000 of Raynor's life in- surange has been tuned over to him. Raynor, incidentally, is insured for $250,000 in the Mutual Life, J. P, Williams pf Picton having been the agent, and Dr, Robertson of Relleville the examining physician. The other liahilities ate spread cver a large number of creditors, Mrs, Ida May Yérex, whose charge lald against Raynor seems to have heen the action that precipitated the present crash, stated yesterday the cirgumstanees under which her charge was laid, "I did not know Mr, Raynor very well personally, but had always heard of him as a very successful husiness man and a good man to deal with, My husband bought a car from him, My husband died this spring and I decided I had better sell thé car, I couldn't drive it myself, When Mr. Raynor came around and asked to handle it for me I agreed, He wasn't to sell it for less than $1,400. 1 heard from him later, He said he had made a deal and would be around to see me about settling up, He didn't come around, so I laid the charge." Tried to Finance Difficulties The reason so little was heard of the Raynor affair was that a determined effort was made by busi- ness friends of Raynor to set up a company that would finapee him past his present difficulties, Where has the money gone? is a question that is exercising. many people, . "Did Raynor play the stock mar- ket?" Rumble was asked, who, as his right hand man at Belleville, was unusually intimate with him, 'Never that I heard of," he replied, "Did he drink much?" "No." "Was he a card player?" *Does- n't know one card from another," Rumble was asked about expen- sive parties at the fine Graham residence in Belleville, which had heen hinted at by a cousin of his at Picton, "I don't think there is anything in that. Outside bf his motor shows, I never heard of any, He wasn't a dancing man." Rumble admitted that his person- al expenses would run pretty high. He liked to have good things, I guess he threw quite a bit of money around that way." The chief loss appears to have been that of excessive valuation on used cars, Car agents throughout the whole countryside are hearing with relief that he has gone out of business. They found it impossible to do what they considered their legitimate selling while he was there, "Raynor put half the agents around here out of business' one man said. Like all successful salesmen, Ray- por--and he was in a class by him- cars--knew the value of adertising. At his motor show, this spring held here at the armories with Roman- elli's orchestra in attendance, one of the big drawing cards was that a handsome new car would be given away absolutely free to amy couple who would "be married during one of the sessions of the show, the ceremony to be performed on # festooned stand just above the shining mew automobile. Rumble, who was his associate and manager at Belleville, was also often in the public spotlight. Photo- graphs of them appeared im trade journals, and sketches of the me- teoric rise of Raynor were printed in the local papers. How times have changed! Gill also was injured, In no case were injuries serious, The protest meeting progressed peacefully enough until the banner- bearers entered dramatically, Then some one shouted, On to the City Hall!" and the rush for this objective was on, The surge forward seemed spoh- taneous, It was irresistible, The thousands swarmed up and oh to Woodward avenue, promptly tying all vehicular traffic into a hopeless tangle, , " The potentialities of the crisis were obvious, with a howling mob heading straight for the doors of the City Hall, But Commissioner Rutledge and his aides had foreseen just such an emergency and had provided against its development into anything more serious than that which resulted. Almost on the heels of the storming thousands came a charge of mounted policemen, 150 uniform- ed officers and 250 plainclothes- men, They sailed into the mob and in less than five minutes were complete masters of the situation, Brandishing night sticks and riot clubs but using neither, ex- cepting under extreme provocation, the police herded the crowds back across Woodward Avenue and grad- ually dispersed them, METAL BUMPING AND ALL KINDS OF BODY WOBK MERRITT AUTO AND REPAIR King St. W, Oshaws LI A Tv WILSONEL EE 71 Simeoe St. N.
