She had always wanted io fly after, having been a keen motorist, and when the London Light Airplane Club was formed a couple of years ago she was one of the first to join. "I hope to be very busy," ghe said, "when the weather becomes better, taking pupils and doing cross-country. trips with passengers and cargo: There should be a great opening in commercial flying mm this age of hurry and bustle. C. Cameron in the Armories yester- day afternoon. The demonstration complete in every detail took but an hour and during that time the youngsters, consisting mostly of the upper grades scholars, took a keen interest in all that the head of, the department said and did. As the teachers themselves said, it is a rare occasion when pupils are allowed to get knowledge of the inner work- ings of a fire alarm system Chief Cameron spent considerable time prio: to the arrival of the stu- dents in arranging a pactical board compte with two sets of fire alarm boxes and a gong such as that used in connection with the depart- ment's daily work. hen the kid- «| dies arrived accompanied by their teachers, both ladies and gentle- men, shortly after three o'clock, everything was in readiness and the program was run off without a hitch. | On opening the mass meeting, there being pupils from the city schools, as well as from north and south Oshawa, Supervising principal Cannon asked that the kiddies keep as quiet as possible and that was all that was needed. Fire Preven- tion Week scored a triumph when Chief Cameron made every scholar, at the outset, pledge to make sure that his or her home would be thoroughly cleansed in respect to any fire hazards. The chief re- ceived a willing hand from practic- ally every child in the building when he asked them to advise their" parents of the danger of waste ma- terials, especially oil rags etc., ev- ery person again. promised co-op- eration. In speaking to a represen- tative of the Oshawa Daily Times" following the demonstration, Chief Cameron claimed he believed nearly every youngstér present fully rea- lized the necessity of fire preven- tion measures. After pointing out the dangers of fire, Chief Cameron gave a practi- cal demonstration of the fire alarm system. He showed how the mieche- nish inside the red box causes the bell at the fire station to riitg and thus direct thep firemen to the loca- tion of the 'fire. ' Instructions to break the 'glass, and 'pull down on the knob' were given. gh 2 a 2 Se J 20 0 J ean chief unlocked the "mystery door" that covers the mechanism and for once in their young lives the euri- osity of the three thousand and fif- ty kiddies' was satisfied. Jnstead of finding a conglomeration of wires, the teachers and students found only a 'well 'regulated system 'of little wheels, the largest being only sev- eral inches in 'height. Later the Promene fire extin- guisher was explained. The appar- atus was taken completely apart by the chief and the children were giv- en a thorough lecture on its make- up, etc. They were shown how the reaction takes place when the chem- ical tank is turned upside down, so that the water, will 'unite with the chemical. In all it was an in- teresting afternoon and Chief Cam- eron maintains that the demonstrd- tion did more to send home the. meaning of Fire Prevention Week, than the story writing, competition conduofe abd yest; PROGRAM WELL: ~ CARRIED OUT (Continued \d from page 9) fuse in their yards if they use reason- able care in so doing, a privilege which they do not enjoy throughout the year. He asked them to co-operate in keep- ing Oshawa's fire loss 'down to the splendid low level that it has been during the past seven years, and to continue to exercise even greater care so that it may be reduced even fur- thes. In his address, Mayor Preston, 'the next speaker, said that in his opinion the council ought to take steps to in- crease the personnel of the present fire department. This is warranted, he said, in view of Oshawa's rapidly grow- ing population, and of the increasing value of property within her limits. He also stated the need for an ade- quate inspection of new buildiggs This year there were from five to six hundred houses erected in Oshawa, with no further inspection, from a fire prevention standpoint, than that af- forded by ihe fire civief and the city engineer, both of which have sufficient work on their hands. Xo time should be lost, he said, in the appointment of a building inspector. He also extend- ed his congratulations to the Fire De- partment on the prompt and efficient manner in which they handle the fire prevention work in the city, thereby nipping many fires in the bud and keeping the loss at a minimum. Mr. T. B. Mitchell, chairman of the Board of Education, in a short address touched on the splendid manner that the children in the city schools re- spond to the fire gong. Lven a school with 400 pupils is emptied in 1%4 minu- tes, the children marching out to mu- sic. He also stated that 95 per cent. «of fires are due to gross carelessness, and that an essential in reducing fire loss is the education of the public to «void carelessness. The last speaker was W. E: N. Sin- clair, M.P.P. He remarked humour- ously that the modern fire department has taken all the fun out of fires, for now in most cases a fire alarm does not turn out to be a real conflagra- tion at all, due to the efficiency of the brigade. Then he went on to drive home the message of carcfulness in the matter of everything pertaining to fire. The careless depend off their insurance and the fire brigade but the wise mdn realizes that fire generally means a loss "that 'no insurance can replace, and strives to protect his own property. Following the addresses, musical numbers were given by local talent, the first number. on the program being an - instrumental' trio by Mrs. S. G. Carnell and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Ayl- ing. The next selection was a vocal duet by Mrs. Batty and Miss Peggy McNell. This was followed by solos by Mrs. Percy Maybee and Mr. Fred Owen, andya duet by Mr. Owen and Mrs! A. C. Cameron. The final num- ber on the program was a solo by Mrs. Cameron. After 'the, musical program, danc- ing was cnjoyed by the large crowd of 'peofle until a late hour.
