Their Majes- ty's public and social appearances, however, will be somewhat restricted owing to the recent death of the Queen's brother, the Marquis of Cambridge. The King and Queen motored from London 'to Windsor for the funeral on Saturday. The King's ordinance that the court mourning for the death of the Marquis of Cambridge shall be for only two weeks illustrates how the Royal Family endeavors not to let personal bereavements interfere with the general life of the nation. In Queen Victoria's time the death of almost any English personage, how- ever remote from the line of succes- sion to the throne, would have en- titled a full month's court mourning at least, The Duke of Connaught has depart- ed for his usual sojourn at his villa on the Riviera, but nearly all the other members of the Royal Family have a heavy engagement list in town or country before them. Even short skirts, bobbed hair and ~--hush--rolled stockings, are mak- ing their appearance in the more progressive districts, After Capt. Brace's inspiring ad- dress, Rev. R. A. Whattam spoke very highly of the service that he has rendered in China and other fields. For the past 16 years he has laboured for the Y.M.C.A. in the interior of Western China and the borderland of Tibet. He is sec- retary of the Student Volunteer Movement of the Canadian Univers- ities, and has seen active service in two wars. A vote of thanks to Capt, Brace was moved by Rev. R. A. Whattam and seconded by Rev. F. J. Maxwell. Dr. Stanley has completed a study of fashions which shows short skirts and sleeves have directly affected the yardage of all goods sold. In 1919 the average woman need- ed 5% yards of 36 in. material for a dress. In only 4 1-6 yards. "The skirts worn in 1919 reached the ankles, in 1925 they were from 10 to 12 inches ahove the foot and at present they are 15 or more ins. up," Dr. Stanley said. The study also showed that cotton has suffered more than any other fabric by the change in fasion "Changes in the length of skirts and sleeves, the straight line dress design, the decrease in the amount of clothing worn by women and the vogue for dress designs that cannot always be suitably developed in cotton, have been some of the fac- tors that have influenced the reduc- tion in consumption of cottons," she said, my FRANCES GRAYSON'S PILOT STILL GAME Stultz Say Hs Will Observe Contract--Aviatrix Con- sults Chamberlin Old Orchard, Me., Oct. 30.--Rumors that Wilmer Stultz, pilot of Mrs. Frances Grayson's projected air ex- pedition to Copenhagen, was on the point of retiring from the flight were disposed of on Saturday by Stultz in his first public statement concerning its reported difficulties with Mrs. Gray- son, Admitting freely that he wished to resign as pilot, Stultz said he would remain with the expedition under his contract with the commander.
