XK § Ih AS Tob Sia THE OSHAWA DAILY TIMES, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 1927 WANTOBA 2k 55:2 LINES i i Essential . opment in That Section of Ottawa, Ont., Nov. 15--Railway branch lines in Northern Manitoba are essential to mining development in that area. There is situated the great Flin Flon copper mine, said to be controlled by the Payne Whitney interests of New York and the Min- ing Corporation of Canada. It is estimated, and development so far supports this estimate, that Flin Flon is one of the richest cop- per mines in the world It is 80 miles from the nearest point on the Hudson Bay Railway. Railway fa- cilities are necessary to its full de- velopment and also the development of adjoining copper gold mines. The Federal Government has preserved great water powers for this company and it is understoodd has practical- ly leaged these powers aggregating a possible development of 400,000 horse power to the company. Railway facilities are necessary. A prominent Toronto barrister rep- resenting the Payne Whitney inter- ests is here negotiating for a branch line The Hudson Bay Line is not a part of the Canadian National Sys- tem but eventually becomes so. Ex- perts have been at work for some time on the freight rates from this mining area in event of a railway being built. Such rates musgy be very moderate to permit of compa- nies in the Flin Flon area compet- | ing with the copper products At points more favorably situated ge- graphically. It is believed such an agreement had been reached. Building the railway is a different proposition, It is understood that to expedite this a private company will be formed, which backed by the Govérnment's promise of either a per mile subsidy or bond guarantee will be able to start work at. once. To pursue the ordinary course of the Government building the line, the vote of Parliament is necessary. This might delay construction for a year. To escape this a subsidiary company will at once be formed, ac- cording to the best informed here. At present the situation is that powerful interests are in control of great mines in Northern Manitoba These interests have been granted. or at least assured of enormous wa- ter power privileges on the Nelson River Further fixed freight rates have heen practically agreed upon and the railway to thi mining area will be built by a subsidiary com- pany with assurances of Government assistance by bond guarantee or straight subsidy. Eventually this proposed branch line and also the Hudson Bay Line will become a part " of the Canadian National System. The Government has also agreed to throw open for homesteading a large clay belt area, which has beén prov- en excellent agricultural land. (114a) FORMING ORCHESTRA AT COLLEGIATE Will Be Composed of Stud- ents -- Mr. Unitt Director The Collegiate Institute is organiz- ing an orchestra to be composed of young men and women of its student body who are interested in that de- partment of music. The first prac- tice will be held Thursday when or- ganization will be completed. Directdr L. F. Unitt of public school music study will be in charge as instruetor and temporary leader. The collegiate had an orchestra in , 1926 which was composed entirely | of boys. It was felt this year that membership should be open to all not only the interests of those per- forming but for the sake of better work. It is 'believed that between some 30 pupils will bef ound qualified for orchestral work. The young men of the collegiate are also organizing a Glee Club but the details of this organization have vet to be worked out. SECTION OF FIRE ALARM SYSTEM OUT OF COMMISSION Fortunately there were no fire calls received by the local department last night, was doubly so last night, for shortly after nine o'clock the electrical fire alarm system became grounded from the continued dampness of rain, and one section of it refused to function. The fire alarm boxes and the gohg at the fire station were not affected and would have operated normally had an alarm been rung, but the system connected with the home of the call men was out of commission. This would have meant that if a fire had occurred, each man would have had to be notified separately by telephone, and thus many precious minutes would have been lost. . ; As a result of the situation, Fire | Chief Cameron remained on duty at | the station all night. It was impos- sible to repair the leak in the system | during the night, but at 8.15 this morn- ing it returned to normal function a- gain. HOSTS AT VENISON DINNER AT WELSH'S Mr. and Mrs. Walter Stacey | at Home to Friends--26 Couples Present One of the most (delightful so- cial functions of the year took place at Welsh"s Parlors lasg night when Mr. and Mrs, Walter Stacey were at home to some of their friends. The event took the form of a veni- son dinner which 26 couples attend- ed. Mayor and Mrs. R D. Preston were present, the former acting as chairman fer the occasion. Dinner | wag served at 7:15 o'clock and later dancing was enjoyed until 12:30 o'clock. Mr. Stacey was a member of the Oshawa Hunt Club and returned | last Week from a trip to the club's quarters at Crombie's Bay on the Bad River. The lecture, which was given by Mr. Arthur Slyfield, was accompanied by 63 slides and pro- voked great interest. Centering around the cities of Bruges, Antwerp, Ghent: and Brus- sels, the address showed scenes of the time of the battle of Waterloo, and also some of the havoc wrought by the Germans in the last war. The slides touched many points of inter- est, and many varying phases of conditions in that country. La Haye Sainte and La Belle Alliance, two outstanding names to the student of Belgian history, were shown, as well as Hougomont, where a farmhouse held by the French was repeatedly attacked by the British in that strug- 7 ia gle over a century ago, and which changed: hands five times The fa- mous Cloth Hall, ruthlessly destroy- ed by the German armies, was also the subject of illustration. The program was in joint charge of the Home and School Clubs of King Street and Ritson Road schools, and several musical numbers added considerably to its attract- iveness. They included a pianoforte solo by Miss Eileen O'Brien, vocal quartettes by Mesdames Davis, Friend, Crozier and Foster; read- ings by Mrs. C. M. Mundy; and voeal solos by Mrs. Jack Smith, all of which were thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated. A vote of thanks was moved by Mes Hartman, seconded by Mrs. Twilley and heartily endors- ed. There was a fair attendance at the meeting, but a larger number would probably have been present had the weather not been so inclem- ent. An executive session of the Coun- cil was held prior to the regular meeting, and it was arranged to have Dr. Kerby, Chancellor of Cal- gary University, and a member of the executive of the National Educa- tion Board, give an address in Osh- awa on November 30th . The place in which the address will be given will be announced later.
