Officially and privately denying every single proposal so far suggested as to the real reason for his presence in Washington, the Canadi gation, the newest in Washington's diplo- matic family, has b ne the centre of interest and speculation. Not a single foreign diplomat but would give almost anything in reason for the material to put in a despatch to his Government explaining just what the Canadian Premier is about in Washington, and not one of them, unless he 1s "scooping" all his col- cagues, has really found out what it is all about. There is considerable resentment among some of the old timers in the diplomatic corps against members of the British Embassy on this account, There is a general belief that, of course, + the British diplomats here know what the Canadians are after, and they believe that they should be given at lcast a private hint, so that their own foreign offices will not bhe- lieve them to be such utter nincom- poops as not to be able to find out what is going on right under their noses, Diplomats Wonder It is difficult to make plain ordin- ary Americans and Canadians under- stand the furore which the Mackenzie King himself that his visit is purely circles, This is the kind of negotia- tion which in Europe and Latin- America has preceeded new align- 'ROOM AND BOARD FOR TWO | gentlemen, centrally located. Miss Rosalind Hightower, who flew from Detroit to Chicago to portray the part of the English gentlewoman who rode wunclad through Coventry, spent the even- ing wondering how she was going to look like a group all by herself, with not even a milk-white steed for company. Certainly very few of the continen- tals and Latin-Americans believe a word of the open declaration by Mr, King himself htat his visit is purely social, and to see the handsome new legation building, which has been fitted up so beautifully by Mr, and Mrs, Massey. Receptions and dinners galere, with a few luncheons and breakfasts thrown in, marked the en- tertainment of the head of the Cana- dian: Government, but he left a very cad and disgruntled lot of diplomais hehind when he started for New York and Canada. For they do not believe what he said, and they have heen unable to firure out even a reason- able possibility as to what it might have. heen, Many of them have spun a lot of finc theories, but it is doubtful if any theories on their own governments even in secret dispatches--for the curious fact is that none of the fan- tastic stand the light of day, someihing absurdly simple--but they cannot learn what it really is, or cal- culate what it might be, Incidentally, Mr. King chose a very interesting week to be in Washington, lle saw another interesting chapter of the effort to draft President Cool- idge for another term, and saw the president repudiate it. He saw two prominent figures, one a senator, and ope a former senator and now a mem- her of the House, propose schemes for the outlawry of war, and saw the f tures, things as they were to be in the year 2,000. If this pro- posal goes into effect the vy streets to survive decapitation wiil be King and Simcoe; these being spared I presume, one on account of deference to our Sovereign, and the other in honor of a distinguis.- ed figure in Canadian history. Let us be thankful for these smal mercies, One of the reasons put forth by the protagonists for this plan is, that occasionally visitors to our town, (I beg pardon, city), get lost and wander aimlessly about our crowded thoroughfare hefore finding their bearings, * or being rescued by the police, The taxi drivers are also up against it and consume gallons oi "gas" in trying to deposit their fares at point of destination, One is given to wonder how the in habitants, visitors and taxi drivers of such cities, say as Montreal and Torento, are able to navigate Both these places are even large: than Oshawa, yet I have neve: heard of any suszgestion or desir on the part of their citizens to have recourse to numbers instead of names for their streets, i To go further afield I might mention London and Paris, both also fairly large centres of popu- | lation, as being examples of the name system or plan, but I suppose fer from lack of vision and fore: sight, Perhaps alsa there may still be lingering a few shreds of senti- jment in their people, and a desire ; to retain some name which may be either femous in the history of their country, er have some asso- ciation with a relative or friend now long gone to his reward of them attempted to impose their | P8ther than be designated as a! | number, The numbering of streets largely of Yankee origin, is and heorics so far advanced will though adopted by some of the leities and towns in the Western The real reason, they all figure, is Provinces, where the Americaniza- | tion of our country is proceeding apace, does not seem in accord with the history and sentiment in our older settled parts.
