LAMBTON SAILORS SACRIFICE LIVES T0 GET RESCUERS "Well, Good-Bys, Gang," Last Words of Heroic Seamen Sault Ste. Marie, Dec. 12.-- "Well, good-bye, gang." were the last words of Elmer Baird, Wiar- ton, oiler, and Ivan C. Moone, Owen Sound, wheelsman, as, dress- ed in life-suits, they jumped over- board Friday afternoon from the steamer Lambton, aground on Parisienne Shoal, in an effort to swim to shore to get relief for their comrades, who had been stranded on the reef since 4 o'clock the previous afternoon. This was the story told by their comrades, whe reached the Sault this even. ing from Goulais Bay, where they landed after leaving their ship on Saturday afternoon in the one re- maining lifeboat, the other boat having heen washed away when they attempted to lower it just af- ter the boat struck the shoal. The steamer Lambton left Fort William, downbound, with a cargo of grain Tuesday afternoon at 4.30 and at 4 o'clock Wednesday morn- ing ran into a blinding snowstorm, through which it erawled along at a snail's pace, unable to see where it was going and uncertain of its location. Thursday afternoon at 4 o'clock the vessel ran on the Pari- sienne Shoal with a terrific crash, Watchman Walter Collins, who was going forward a; the time, was al- most washed overboard, grabbing a rail just in time to save himself, Mate Forbes had to elimb on a spar to save himself 'As he came along the deck to warn those in the forward cabins, and his life- sult was washed out of his hands. Earl Ransom, a deck hand, was another who was almost washed overboard hy the waves. He was asleep when the crash came, hut immediately put on his life-suit and came on deck. The hoat was already a mass of fee as a result {of having been so long tossed about {by the waves in the midst of the blizzard, the ice being in places two feet thick, The general opinion expressed by the members of the crew was that the vessel could not "ave Fone much farther at the best and if it had not run aground would have foundered before long, weighted down as it was by tons of ice, Chances Were Few "I wouldn't have given 25 cents for our chances of coming through alive, even before the crash," said Chief Engineer J. F. Duncan of St. Catharines, The water did not take long to ret into the engine room, and with the buffeting the ship got the crew hourly expected it to break in two, The deck heaved and the ship's sides were bulging. Engineer Duncan and his see- ond engineer, Morgan Reid of Wiarton, agreed that the outstand- ing thing in their minds was the first night on board, when they thought there was little chance of their ever coming out alive. Both also paid tribute to the fine man- ner in which the crew carried on, each doing his bit, the morale being splendid. Immediately after the Lambton struck, an attempt was made to lower a lifeboat, but as it was being lowered to the deck, where provisions were placed aboard it, a huge wave struck the vessel, carry- ing the lifeboat overboard and breaking the inch rope which was attached to it. Efforts were then made to lower the second lifeboat, and it too was almost lost, The storm kept up, and while for a minute the haze over the water lifted on Thursday night and the light at Whitefish Point was ¥is- ible, steam from the water soon clouded their view again. Both that night and Friday night huge flares, made of black paint and eokum, were lighted on the roof of the afterhouse in the hope of attract- ing the attention of passing ves- sels, but apparently they were un- seen, Friday just about noon, Ransom and George Eades, a fireman, made their way forward and hacked their way toto the house to take 2 look at the ometer and to secure the binoculars. It was just after this that . Baird snd Moone, who had seen laxd when getting coal for the fire im the galley and who thought they had distinguished a mill on the shore, meade their heroic but ill-fated et- tempt to swim ashore, To them it seemed a short distance, but actu- ally it was about 11 miles. on'tSay Anythingls Lost Until Y ou Have Tried A Want Ad and on top of these their life suits, and with a rope tied around their' waists to keep them together with about 10 feet to play on, they jumped overboard, despite the pro- TIME TABLES tests of their companions. They have not been seen since. Weather Moderates On Saturday the weather had moderated somewhat, and shortly after noon the remaining lifeboat was launched with the 18 mem- bers of the crew aboard. It had been quite a job to fix it up, as it was coated with ice, in places six inches thick, and holes had been knocked in the sides when the first attempt was made to lower fit. Favored by the way the sea was running they reached the main- land, midway between Rudder Head and Goulais. The trip across the 11 miles of water was in itself a perilous one, as the boat was taking water as fast as three men could bail it out. Most of the row- ing was done by Mate Forbes, Chief Engineer Duncan, Second Engineer Reid and Second Officer Boulton.
