MAN WANTED FOR MURDER OF CHILD STILL AT LARGE Slayer Talked With Officer 12 Hours After Committing Crime STOLE DRUGS Alleged Killer Lived in an Apartment Under Assumed Name Los Angeles, Calif.,, Dec. 20-- Defying capturue at the hands of the greatest force of officers uver assembled for a man hunt Mm ue West, Willlam Edward Ricaman, identified as the kidnapper and slayer of Marian Parker, 12.year- old school girl, was still at large today. Spurred on by the positive iden- tification of Hickman as the youth responsible for the abduction and killing of the child, and the arrest of another youth, Milton Jakowsky, believed to have been an accom- plice, police in Los Angeles and Southern California pressed for- ward the hunt relentlessly, Eight thousand men combed Los Angeles and its environs, while other thousands prosecuted a search through the Pacific south- west for the killer, on whose head a reward of $100,000 has been placed. In the arrest of Jakowsky, au thorities believed they had found the man who gave Hickman infor- mation concerning the Parker fam- ily during the kidnapper's ransom nerotiations with Perry M, Parker, bank official and father of Marian Jakowsky, in the hellef of inves- tigators, acted as an intermediary for Hickman, who graduated as an honor' student at Central Hirh School in Kansas City in 1926 and is said to be 19 years old. Police seid Jakowsky came to T.os Angeles five weeks ago from Washington, D.C., where he is be lieved to have heen a Government employe. Jakowsky is known to have heen friendly with both the Parkers and Hickman, His age wa' given as 25, and he was said to be single, Threatens Suicide Jakowsky attempted to overpow er guards at the 9$ity jail this morning, but was subdued by four men and locked in another cers, "| while erying that he would lake his own life. A heavy guard was maintainers about the jail because of threat: voiced on the streets against the prisoner, Although taken into cus- tody last aight, nis name was with- held until noon today. Announcement that Hickman had been identified as the yout who lured * the girl away from '|school last Thursday, and on Sun- day night delivered her torso to her father in exchange for a ransom of $1,500, was made after police had compared fingerprints from the slayer's car and ransom notes with those in Hickmran's police record. His photograph from the police files was identified by Miss Neona Britten, teacher, who was tricked into permitting Marian to accom- pany the kidnapper by his stery that her father had been injured. Belief that Hickman was stu in Ios Angeles or vicinity was strengthened when Jack Woods at tendant of a filling station, identi- fie' the hunted youth's photograph as that of the driver of a blue auto- mobile, which eluded a hot pursuit here at dawn today. The driver of the ear obtained five gallons of gasoline from Woods and sped away without paying for it. Woods gave chase in another car, but was outdistanced. Squads of police joined in the hunt for the machine without success, Crowds of curious persons gath- ered in front of the Central Po- lice Station during the day, watch- ing officers come and go, but no unruliness was displayed. Reconstructing Orime In reconstructing the crime to- day, police assigned vengeance as an obvious motive for the slaying, but hinted that degeneracy may have been at the bottom of the case, Hickman was employed as a mes- senger in the bank of which Mr, Parker is assistant cashier, He was arrested on a forgery charge last Summer, but was paroled. Police expressed the belief that Hickman erroneously thought that Parker had opposed his application or paro'e and killed the bank of- ficlal's daughter out of revenge. Parker did not oppose the parole, it developed today. The nature of the crime led in- vestigators to the conclusion that sex perversion may have entered into ft ard that several youths be- sides Hickman may have been in- volved, Police In their scouring search of the city Belocated in the Bellevue Arms Apartments a bathroom spat- tered with blood in which they de 'lared Marian Parker's body had "een dissected, The proprietress 'dentified Hickman's picture as the oung man who rented the apart- 'ent under the name of Evans.
