Other Juebee dealers came in for high honors in the remdering of voyageur songs and the ever § "Allouette." e special chorus recruited for that masterly rendition (to men- tion which stirs the memory with remembered laughter at the varied insistence of "Et le bee," "Et le nez," and so om to a biological in- finity), consisted of Messieurs J. F. R. Ledue, A. A, Leblane, D, J. O'Connor, Georges Clermont, Sr., Georges Clermont, Jr., Joseph Pipe, A. J. Riche, N. J. Catudal, all with the exception eof Mayor O'Connor, from Montreal. The toast to the King brougnt the banquet assembly of nearly 500 to their feet. Indian feathers were discarded as manly voices roared out the solemn measures of the National Anthem, Glasses clinked and waved high as tae Pontiac dealers shouted 'The King!" Introductions of the factory exe- cutive was the first ceremony of the after-banquet program. Last on the list was President MeLaugh- lin, whose name was mentioned only to have the throng break forth in trat "Jolly Good Fellow" song, Ag its conclusion, Mr, Me- Laughlin rose, but the Pontiac dealers fuither honored him with "See Him Smiling." Mr. McLaughlin addressed hie guests as fellow members of the General Motors family, Wonderful Gathering "I think Mr, Ansley," he sald. "that as general sales manager of the Pontiac Division, 'you are to be congratulated on such a won- derful gathering as this. It is the greatest Pontiac gathering in my memory, for I see before me men from the Maritimes, from Quebee, from Ontario and the West, "You, gentlemen, have come to see the new Pontiac offering for the year, and I believe that your enthusiasm tonight witnesses your opinion of that offering. I had intended to be with you earlier in the day, but I had Mr. Morris, president of the. Morris-Cowley Company in Great Britain as my guest, Mr, Morris Is sometimes known as the 'Ford of England,' and he tells me that his plant manufactured some 90,000 ears during the past year, "It was interesting to hear him tell of the difficulties he encounter- ed in getting to his ship, It requir- ed the ald of a fire truck to dig a way through 14 foot smow-drifts, Imagine that in England! I told him that he had come to § sum- mery climate! "Mr. Morris Is on his way to New Zealand for his health, but I told him that there must be something wrong in his manage- ment, and that he should take me for an example. I merely make a bluff of working. What I really do is let the boys here carry on" Mr. McLaughlin was certaln that George Ansley was a sort of Scotchman, for he declared that in turning over his place card he found that he had borrowed it from the Chevrolet division and that Mr. Brown's card had been purloined from the Bick section. "This," he ssid, "ls what I call the height of economy and I feel safe in predicting thet your Pontiac division will surely get returns this year." But Mr, McLaughlin was sure of the Pontiac for other reasons than his *"Scoteh" sales manager's capniness in the matter of place cards. It stande today as the finest small six in the world. Refine- ments in equipment and improve- ments in mechanism make it a twin marvel of quality and price. "The Pontiac," he continued, "is as much a Canadian product as it is possible to make it, and what you have seen today in your tour of the plant has shown you bow much more is going to be done in that matter. "This year we have spent $3, 000,000 on additions to plant and equipment. Among the additions is the mew sheet metal plant. There is nothing finer in its class in the world, Nothing better equipped, more efficiently laid out. You e also seen the new machine shops, paint plant extension, body building expansion, the new radiator plant, the new machine shops, the new enamell- ing section, and other improved departments. "This past year General Motors expended $27,000,000 for the pur- chase of raw materials and finish- ed products in Oanada alone. The total business amounted to over $70,000,000. We paid $9,800, with the new Pontiac. No one can gaze on it without becoming en- amored with it. Handsome is that does, and the new Pon- O'Connor fis! tiac is a winner both in appearance and performance. You are, with. out flattery, an intelligent assem- bly of men. You can't be fooled. H. A. Brown, vice presi and general manager of Generdl Motors of Canada, Limited, followed Mr. Much of his remarks A fea- tures of the mew Pontiac and were hugely enjoyed. He closed by saying: "I have one thought to leave you, While in looking at the new Pontiac, we think it is an outstanding value, we must remember it is no more than the public expects of General Motors. "This means then that our great. est advertising field lies in the realm of service. 'In the Pontiac we are offering something better than ordinary, something excep- tional, but to carry the program to success demands exceptional ser- vice." J. H. Beaton, general sales man- ager, chided the dealers before him because they didn't come to Osh- awa often emough to get properly acquainted. "Acquaintance, know- ing one another, is the big thing in this industry and in the selling of cars," he declared, He then outlined the campaign for bringing parties of visitors to Oshawa to see the plant, "Come on," he suggested, "let's get a big bunch from eaéh of your centres and visit the plant, T am inspired anew every time I go through ft. This year we took over 5,000 visitors through the plant, This year we want to make it twenty or 25,000, "Get your party together and telephone us a day ahead, We'll see that you are properly looked after." § . A. A. Ross, regional manager for British Columbia, predisted that the new Pontiac would set up am unprecedented sales record in the Pacific Province. Fred Kirby, manager of the Prairie Provinces from Winnipeg, was equally optimistic with regard to his distriet. C. B. McTavish, chief of General Motors Parts and Service, gave an address on what that department has to offer dealers in 1928, He described the service problem of the garages of Canada as falling under five heads, namely: Prem- ses, Parts, Tools, Mechanics and Methods. General Motors, he declared, will supply plans to dealers either for the erection of new buildings or alteration of those now in use. General Motors trade schools train mechanics for the highest point of service efficiency; and special help is given in the way of introdue- ing efficient accounting and man- agement systems. He stressed cleanliness as one of the imperative conditions of ef- ficlen; garage operation in view of the number of ladies driving their own cars and requiring service. Garages should, more and more, cater to them for in doing so they are making firmer allies of men drivers. Reference was again made to the new arrangement which Gen- eral Motors effected between David Lupton and Sons of Philadelphia and The Pedlar People, Limited, where their special steel shelving may be manufactured In future at Oshawa. This will permit the in- stalling of steel bins for garage' stocks at a price not more than 13 per cent over the U.S. prices for the equipment. Formerly, the difference was over 40 per cent. The outstanding success of Gen- eral Motors Thr Weeks' courses was ascribed to the efforts of J. B, B. Shorit, chief instructor, whom Mr. McTavish asked to stand up so that the deslers could see him. The fullest possible use of the school was urged on all present. Mr. Ansley closed the conven- tion by saying: This Pontiac convention closes with the highest enthusiasm in convention history. Go out into the New Year with the New Pon- tine and do your stuff! I predict that we'll not only keep our 1927 unities TIME TABLES CNR.
