SENATOR ASKS TARIFF REDUCTION Republicans at Odds Over Present High Import Rates Washington, Jan, 12.--Inform- ed that the administration would not sanction a revision of the Tariff Act for at least two years, the Senate, nevertheless, gave this subject its first real airing in years Monday and indulged in an old- fashioned flow of oratory on the resolution of Senator MeMaster, Republican, South Dakota, declar- ing, for a general reduction of im- port schedules. The move of the South Dakota Republican stirred the ire of Benator Smoot, Republican, Utah, who quoted President Coolidge in defending the high rates of the present act against the attacks from farm bloc republicans and |the incessant jibes of the Demo- erats, who listened with obvious joy to the Republicans quarreling over the tariff. Commercial | A vote on the McMaster reso- lution finally went over until Tuesday as Senators Smoot and McMaster became entangled in a { lengthy argument growing from jan accusation of the Seuth Dakot- an that Senator Smoot was inter- ested in high tariff because of his interests in sugar factories. Senator Smoot replied that he did have 400 shares in a South Da- kota sugar factory whieh he of- fered to sell McMaster for $1.50 a share but the South Dakota Senator declined with the remark that the people of his state was that the people of his state want- ed Mr. Smoot to remain in busi- ness there, Regardless of the vote on the McMaster resolution the Senate is powerless to act in actually re- vising rates until after the House which has the sole right under the constitution to initiate such legis- Iation, does so, The resolution was described as a "threat and an at- tack in the dark" by ' Senator Smoot who is chairman of the finance committee which handles tariff legislation.
