The applicant to state salary expected. Lowest or any tender, not necessarilly accepted. P. G. Purves, Clerk, Columbus, Ont, (7-9-11) motion carried. Mr. McLaughlin appointed D. M. L. Mason, F. J. Reddin and R. F. Morphy within himself ex-officio. Ald. Conant expressed entire agree- ment with the decision taken and elaborated Ald. Alloway's suggestion regarding the Rotary Club by stating that it, alone, would be proud to furnish 40 men for campaign teams. J. J. Callaghan, manager of the Oshawa Railway, stated the meet- ing's general opitimisn with regard to organization, He was of the opin- ion that Oshawa could have one of the livest organizations in Ontario. Ald. John Stacey, also numbered himself with those who regard the formation of a city-building Chamber of Commerce as a certainty, Vice-Chairman Conant, in maving Mr. Reddin's appointment as tempor- ary secretary, stated that while Mr, McLaughlin had thanked the com- mitee for electing him as its chair- man, it was the committee's place to thank him for accepting the post. For, he decla ed, with Mr. McLaugh- lin as chairman, the public could rest assured that the movement would go forward to success, Members of the committee present were A. J Graves, "illiam Carnell, 11, Callaghgar 2. "A. MacDonald, F. L. Mason, George Alchin, A. R, Allo- way, D. M. Tod, D. J. Douglas, R. Stewart, John Stacey, George McLaughlin, G. D. Conant, Dr. A, W, Harding, R. S. Morphy and F. J. Reddin. APPLICATION FOR CHARTER FOR NEW CHAMBER OF COM. (Continued from page 1) tions that are staged both in a prim- ary for nominations and actual bal- loting for office holders was recom- mended. Mr, Conant moved that the name of the proposed trade body should be "The Oshawa Chamber of Com- merce" and that a Dominion charter should be obtained. Seconded by A. J. Graves, the motion carried unani- mously, F. J. Reddin was elected honorary secretary to serve the committee in its initial work. He immediately took office. Discussion then centered on wheth- er the American City Bureau experts should be brought i in to stage a mem- bership campaign, D. Tod, while not favoring the method, stated that if that service could guarantee results, it might be in the best interest of the city to em- ploy them, He declared that Osh- awa could not afford to let the pres- ent movement die through lack of initial momentum, Reference to the Council's position brought a statement from Ald. Mac- Donald that he was convinced of the Council's earnest desire to co-operate to the fullest extent in organizing the Chamber of Commerce. Ald, A. J. Graves spoke against bringing in the City Bureau force, and was certain that Oshawa itself could stage its own campaign and be assured of success. R. S. Morphy expressed a similar confidence in Oshawa's ability to do the work required in organizing the Chamber, Ald. Alloway pointed out that while the Bureau referred to did take 'charge of Chamber of Commerce campaigns, the spade work of or- ganization was necessarily left to the volunteer workers of communities concerned, Executive direction, he declared, was vital to such a move- ment's success, but he was of the opinion, as expressed by other speak- ers, that Oshawa could furnish both executive direction as well as volun- teer campaigners. Mr. Alloway felt certain that the local Rotary Club, for instance, could be counted upoh to give the fullest measure of co-operation in view of the resolution passed by it in De- cember unanimously endorsing the formation of a Chamber of Com- merce. Dealing with finance, he advanced the thought that while the Council could be well asked to contribute 'generously, such a grant should not be earmarked for any particular pur- pose--secretary's salary for instance. "The Chamber of Commerce will haye many other expenses," he point- ed out, * and jt is vital to the suc- cess of the undertaking that Cham- ber should look upon its secretary as its own employee." Mr. Alloway was assured that a number of citizens would be proud to guarantee the salary of the secre- tary who could be employed and then given the tasks of organization, back- ed of course by full co-operation from the executive and other bodies interested. Mr. McLaughlin was asked what . {he thought of bringing in a profes- {) | sional campaign organization, and he UNION PRINTERS ARE ON STRIKE Composing Rooms Staffs Walk Out in Two London Newspaper Plants London, Ont, Jan, 13--The staffs of the composing rooms of The Free Press and The Advertiser went on strike tonight following the failure to negotiate a new agreement, The two papers offered a renewal of the old agreement, while the men demanded an in- crease in wages and certain chang- es in the agreement. Combining forces, the two papers expect to is- sue a joint morning paper tomor- row. A joint statement appears in the papers tomorrow explaining to their readers their position, The statement says, in part: "The Free Press and The Adver- tiser printing staffs went out on strike last night as a result of their refusal to renew the present agree- ment with the two papers, which has been in force for the past three years, The striking men asked for an increase in pay which, with the size of the staffs of The Free Press and the Advertiser, would have meant many thousands of dollars annually, and demanded certain other changes In the agreement which the papers felt were pot jus- tified. "The Free Press and The Adver- tiser have a 42-hour and a 44-hour week, being among the first papers in Canada to make this short hour week. The two papers have also led in Canada in giving their print- ing staffs a week's holiday' yearly with full pay, The Free Piess, in addition, insures its men. ln case of death the widow of any mem- ber of the staff would receive a f1:J1 year's salary and also $100 for funeral expenses, There is likewise a sick benefit of $10 per was for ten weeks, to which The Free Press largely contributes."
