Blazer, captain of the tug City of Pittsburgh, which crashed into a launch on the Mississippi River near Narco Sunday, has been plac- ed under a $10,000 bond on a charge of manslaughter. ' Six persons were drowned when the tug, going up-stream, with 10 empty barges in tow, struck the launch which was operating as a ferry. Persons on shore had shouted a warning to the tug when they saw that a crash was immin- ent, but the warning was too late. The launch was quickly swept un- der water by a swift current. Captain Blazer later was allow- ed to continue to Pittsburgh, Pa, with. his boat. The tug is owned by the Carnegie Steel Corporation of Pittsburgh. PROPERTIES T0 BE SOLD FOR TAXES 1,442 Proprietors Notified to Settle Present Arrears Quebec, Jan. 19.--The annual sale of properties throughout the various counties of the province for municipal and school taxes wil! take place in.the near future, 1,- 442 proprietors of land in 29 coun- ties having received notice to either pay up or else see their property sold for taxes ranging from 25 cents to $612.13. This latter amount, which is the highest in the list, is for a property loceted in Stanstead County. Montreal and Quebec cities are about the only large centres in the province that are not ineluded in the list, which comprises the coun- ties of Saguenay, Abitibi, Levis, Vaudreuil, St. Maurice, Three Rivers, Naplerville, Wolfe, Char- levoix, Matapedia, Richmond, Drummond, Montealm, Roberval, St. Hyacinthe, Bagot, Matane, Montmoreney, L'Islet, Yamaska, Brome, Beauce, Sherbrooke, Dor- chester, Stanstead, Frontenac, Montmagny, Berthier and Comp- ton. 1S SWEPT ALONG IN ICY SEWER Quebec Man is Finally Res- cued Nearly a Mile Away Quebec, Jan. 18.--To be swept for three-quarters of a mile through the icy waters of the city's 42-inch sewer and to be hauled to safety through a manhole with no more serious injury than in- jured arms, was the experience of Ernest Bernard, 35 years of age, civie employee, today. Bernard was clearing the sewer of snow on St. Olivier Street near Ste. Clair street, when he fell into the water and was carried away. Fellow- employees gave the alarm, and Bernard was finallly fished out of the sewer at a manhole situated on Parent Square, three-quarters of a mile away. It Bernard's fellow-employees had not succeeded in saving him when they did it is almost certain that he would have lost his life. Not far froma the Parent Square manhole where he was rescued the sewer empties itself into the St. Charles River, It was first reported that man had been carried into the river. Manholes Manned Whiie Bernard was engaged in clearing the snow from the sewer located on St. Olivier Street, which had become nearly blocked with snow dumped in through Upger Town manholes, a miniature dam of snow which was holding back the water suddenlyy gave way, and before he could spring to safe- ty the onrush of water and snow struck him and swept him from his feet. He was standing directly above the opening, The unfortunate man's cries for help were heard by the foreman of the gang, Faucher, who quickly grasped the situation and without delay rushed men to all the man- i holes under which Bernard would pass. So fast was the water running through the sewers, however, that it was not until Bernard had been carried as far as Parent Square that he was stopped. After being pulled up through the manhole Bernard was ryshed in a semi-conscious condition to a nearby store where restoratives were applied and a call put through for the ambulance. At the Hotel Dieu Hospital, where he was taken, Bernard was found to have suffered practically no serious injury. His arms, how- ever, were bruised and torn by the efforts he had made to withstand the rush of water by wedging himself against the sewer walls, It was stated at the hospital that, though the vietim's arms were somewhat bruised and though he bad suffered considerably from the cold, he would probably .not be detained in the hospital longer than a day. the | TIME TABLES CNR.
