Allen, R. & B., $10275:18 MUTUAL LIFE HAD - TEAR OGRE TER The year 1927 was a most suc cessful one for the Mutual Life Assurance Company of Canada. Figures have been published show- ing that. the Company wrote dur- ing the year over $52,250,000 of new business which 'brings the as- surances in force to $386,669,481 or no less than $32,600,000 in ex- ceas of the amount in foree at the end of 1926. Assets increased by $8,600,000. Dividends paid policy- holders were over $3,646,000, which represents an increase of more than $650,000 over the pre- vious year. The surplus earnings of the com- pany amounted to the gratifying sum of $4,501,387, which is $360,- 000 more than the very satisfac- tory earnings of 1926. These fig- urea show a relation to assets of $60.45 per $1,000, This means much to Mutual policyholders be- cause profits belongs to them, and r in the form of cash, reduced premiums or increased insurance. ' Progress was made in every de- partment of the company's busi- ness, The assets of the Mutual Life --mostly gilt-edged government and municipal securities, have grown to a total of $89,233,343. These assets are all Canadian and represént investments in every province, They give policyholders the added satisfaction of knowing that their funds are being used to develop their own country® The company has surplus funds and in- vestment reserves amounting to more than $11,829,000, so that continued liberal dividend distri butions are assured. It will he gratifying to Mutual policyholders to note. that the cost ratio of securing new members for the Mutual family and administrat- ing the company's affairs declines as the membership grows. ratio for 1927 was only 14.44 per cent., as compared to 15.11 per cent; in 1926 and 15.23 per cent. fn 1926, Oa the other hand, the revenue from investments held up remark ably well, considering the steadily declining interest rates which marked the past year. The aver- age rate earned on Mutual invest: ments in 1926 was 6.48 per cent, while in 1927, despite the general decline, the Mutual's investments yielded 6.46 per cent, Canadians have cause for pride fn the record of The Mutual Life of Canada. Starting without one cent of share capital, two years after Canadian Confederation, its growtih has kept pace well with that of Canada, and the company today ranks as one of the strong institutions 'of the Dominion and one of the soundest life insurance companies on the continent. Its in- vestments are confined to Cana- dian securiities and its policyhold- ers are, of course, chiefly Cana- dians, as this company confines its operations to Canada and New- foundland.
