Feb. 12.-- Charles Platts, of Vineland, is an- xious for the safety of his broth- er, Tom Platts, former Hamilton- jan, 8 member of the repair gang of the Hollinger Mine who has not been heard of since the dis- aster. The brother( when spok- en to on the long distance tele- phone tonight, said he had receiv- ed no word and he is alarmed. al- though he does not know whether Tom Platts was on day or night duty. Platts is the only local man at Hollinger, so far as can be learned. BEBE DANIELS HURT Pasadena, Cal., Feb. 12.--Bebe Daniels, motion picture star, was seriously injured here yesterday when an imitation Pullman car in which a picture was being filmed fell from an automobile truck on which it had been mounted. The actress lost consciousness for a few minutes and was very weak Residence 99 Mill street. £(111tf) when she reached the hospital, HEROIC RESCUE EFFORTS RELATED Long Hours of Terror Mark- ed the Fight Against Gases Timmins, Ont,, Feb. 13.--Storles from survivors of the Hollinger disaster in St. Mary's Hospital to- day, told of deeds of great heroism, of privation and suffering. Men staggering blindly along the tortu- ous, black passages; groping their way by the sides of the tunnels or crawling on hands and knees over the trolley rails, choking as the smoke and gas filled their lungs, and eventually dropping dead through suffocation. This was part- ly revealed in the stories. Lying on his hospital cot, M, N. Petchick unburdenmed himself to- day of a tale which for grim hor- ror, has had few equals. He was working on the fifth level on ¥ri- day morning when the smell of smoke was wafted to his nostrils. "I could tell the difference between smoke from blasting and wood smoke," he sald, 'and I knew that there was a fire somewhere." Forced Back by Gas He endeavored to warn some of his comrades and to make his way from No. 16 cross-cut to No. 18, at the end of which was the main shaft, With one or twe others he started, but the smoke became heavier and they could detect gas getting into their lungs, They had reached almost to No. 18, where there was a truck that would have brought them to the main shaft, but when almosg on it, they were driven back by billows of deadly acrid smoke, They staggered back toward No. 16, and some of the party separated. Petchick made his way to the fourth level, and there he again gave the warning. Seven men were picked up, all told, and efforts were made to reach the main shaft on this level. Again they were driven back into the workings, un- til they finally reached a dead end and the men had to improve gas masks from their shirts, steeped in water, They collected the carbide from their lamps and with ham- mers broke the compressed air line over their heads. They endeavored to twist the pipe so that the air might blow the smoke away from them, and in this way they were partially successful, Meanwhile they kept one lamp burning, conserv- ing their supply of carbide, "It was cold and wet and we were hungry," sald Petchick, "Some of the fellows had ordinary boots on, and soon their feet got s0 wet they almost froze. We had to drink out of the drip that runs down the side of the rock, but we had only two lunches among us." This food was carefully ration- ed out and hour after hour the seven kept their cold vigil. There were times when the smoke would clear entirely away from that part of the mine where they were en- trapped, and on such occasions they would starg out, Suddenly Overcome Stories from the rescue armies tell of the sudden death which must have overtaken some of the men, They were worming their way along the crosscut on one of the levels when they encountered a group of four men apparently par- taking of lunch, The attitudes were perfectly normal, jn facg one man was seated with his lunch bucket held firmly between his knees, while another was resting his fore- head on his hands as if he were just resting his eyes, after finish- ing his lunch, Reports of tapping on the pipe lines are being circulated, but this cannot be verified as yet, If cor- rect, this will give an indication as to where some pf the men are and perhaps they can be reached. The fire still burns and the res- cue men say that it is worse than yesterday. Efforts to reach the scene of the fire have so far proved unavailable, hut it is expected that hose will be sent as near as pos- sible as soon as it is known that this will not endanger the lives of any men who may still be living. Volunteers Flock to Mine Volunteer workers from all parts of the north country have their services and have been glad- ly accepted. R. B, Black, from the Lakeshore Mine, Kirkland Lake, phoned Mr. Knox at the Hollinger as soon as he heard of the disaster and offered to come by the next train, He arrived in Timmins at 8.30 and immediately started to assist the rescue gangs. He worked hard through Friday night. All day Saturday he was seen to be de- scending the shaft, and again today he is one of those with the Pitts- burg party. Another volunteer ar- rived from Cobalt this morning on the special train. This is Mr Stev- enson, formerly a member of the United States Bureau of Mines. He too, is working hard with the rest of the rescuers. Members of the Hollinger staff are giving every possible assistance, "But as soon as we started walk- ing or crawling along, we would just disturb the gas which was sweeping low--no more than two feet from the ground. This would get into our lungs and it drove us back to the dead end where we had some fresh air, anyway," Petchick said. He told of how the hours passed in the utter dreariness of the underground, until finally their supply of both food and carbide "Ge is Sxhausied of Dead Comrades 'One of the men remembered having passed two of their com- rades dead, back in the workings. and Petchick slowly made his way to where the bodies lay. He col- lected the carbide and the lunch The smoke poured in on them,| What Price do You Want to Pay? buys Ford Touring with starter, Chevrolet 490 Good $50. $75.0 tires, buys Superior Chevrolet $10 Touring, 23 model, $125.00 $150.00 tires, $175.00 motor, $200 buys model, $22 buys 1921 Dodge Sedan Wire wheels, Many others to suit your purse. Extra good tins of the dead men and returned to where the others were, The carbide enabled them to keep & light going for a few hours more, but the food w:s poisoned by the gas, and not fit to eat. However, one of the tins contained a bottle- full of tea and another some cof- fee. This was carefully divided and life was maintained for a while longer, A council of war was held, and it was finally decided to try and make for the main shaft, a policy considered better than slowly starv- ing to death, Previously, however, two of their number had started out to try and locate another trol- ley. Thay was the last seen of them. Reduced to five, the party then began their journey. As far as Petchick could recall the time was about noon Saturday, after 29 hours underground. Slowly they stumbled along, their oeads muf- fled in their pitifully inadequate masks, Petchick was second last of the party which proceeded in single file, with hands joined. Some distance toward the main shaft the last man sagged to the ground, overcome by the gas, and Petchick remained with him while the first three went on Petchbick bore his comrade back to the dead end and there revived him. Again Made Attempt Only two now remained of the party--Petchick and his comrade. They plunged their heads in water and after waiting for a consider- able time, started off again. It was while they were gradually working forward to the main shaft that they were found by a rescue party and brought to the surface.
