DETROIT NOWNS KITCHENER Kitchener, Ont, Feb. 14.--A game that was salted away and appeared to be a sure victory for the Millionaires was pulled out of the bag by the Detroit Olympics in the last ten minutes when they rat- tled in four goals to turn a 4 to 2 defeat into a 6 to 4 victory, The game was a flerce nip and tuck battle all the way with both teams bumping and crashing, The gruel- ling grind told on the Millionaires and when the Detroit team started its spurt they were unable to stem the tide, More judicious use of the subs might have averted the catastrophe fer Manager Alf Skinner left big Bd Gorman, who played his first game in three weeks, on the ice tor the entire 60 minutes when he was tired out, while Ripley and Hiller also had their tongues hanging out when Detroit register- ley was given no relief and Detroit qiiokly equalized the score, Then the leg weary Gorman and Me- Farlane pulled some poor defence work and the Olympics notched the goals which gave them thelr 6 to 4 ed the first goal. It was a stremu- ous struggle with the lone. goal of the encounter coming in the sec- ond period when Reise fooled Hainsworth on a long, fast drive from the blue line. Canadiens looked better on the night's offensive play, but a stub- born American defensive system, backed by fine goal-tending by "Jumping Jake" Forbes, kept the Yankees in the fight throughout. Forbes gave a splendid display. Many times Canuck attacks got right through to - the opposing goaler, but the latter was always in the way. The Canucks scored two goals, according to the goal umpires, but both were overruled by the officials on the ice. The first, coming shortly after Reise's goal in the second period caused a lot of comment and discussion, PARRY SOUND GIVE NEWMARKET BATTLE Newmarket, Ont, Feb. 14--New- market juniors advanced a step near: er the OHA, championship when they held the fast Parry Sound jun- iors here tonight to a scoreless draw game, but winning the round 1 to 0, they having defeated the "Sounders" on their home ice last Friday night by this score. The recent mild spell made the ice exceedingly sticky, with the result that the brand of hockey was far from being up to standard. The play- ers found it almost impossible to play combination in the going, and were continually overskating the puck. Newmarket had much the best of the play in the first period, but Mur- dock took care of everything that got past the defence. Both teams showed more aggres- siveness in the second period and worked hard to land a counter, but were again unsuccessful, Ames was called upon to handle more shots in this period, and gave a good account of himself, although Pringle and a EW MARTIN pr, THEATRE AA noo GBS Hoot Gibson Comes to Oshawa Again ©] Jie RAWHIDE KID 118 1b 6, Bil Stocks, Ontario Regt. ve. At any rate one of the largest con- tingents from Oshawa to appear in Bowmanville will probably storm that town tonight. The intermediates are expected to take Whithy's measure, but are counting on real hattles before that event tgkes place, Whithy has one of the best intermediate teams that have represented that town for years, and their defeat of the Railroading ~rew from Have- lock at Peterboro, has whetted their appetite for further con- quests, and it is to be feared that they would dearly love to take a fall out of Sammy Lowe's larrup- ing hockeyists. The return game will be played at Oshawa next Mon- day evening. Newmarket are one of the fa- vorites to appear in the O. H. A, junior fipals, and all who have seen this team perform both in the 8. P. A apd the O. H. A, series, are agreed that it will take a real team to defeat them, They are winpers of the 8S. P. A. trophy, which is, however, generally con- sidered a jinx to a team that is fighting to reach the O, H. A, play- offs. In winning the 8. P. A. they disposed of the powerful Marlboro team in the fipals. To win the roup, they had strong opposition the Danforths. and have just emerged from two close tussles with 'Parry Sound, -They won out with the narrow margin of one counter over the Northerpers, who furnished unexpected opposition. Parry Sound did not appear upus- ually strong to the writer who has geen the team perform, but were heavy and fairly fast, and prob- ably played 8 purely defensive game against the strong Newmar- clan, Ke ithor Bowmanville or Oshawa should give the highly-rated crew from south of Barrie, a strong ar- gument. On a large ice surface, the smoother Shamrocks would probably furnish better opposition, but on the Barnhard-Bradley band- box, Bowmanville would probably have more chance to down the S. P. The Leafs' for- wards did pot look any too good in the early part of the game, there being few attempts at combina- tion, although they did give Wor- ters more shots to handle than had Roach. In the second "period the margin between the two teams was even greater and the Pirates de- served their two-goal margin en- tering the third period and per- haps a couple of more counters. The Corsairs had been allowed to ramble in on Roach and with his defence backing up on him the lo- cal goalie was lucky to make three or four of the saves credited to him. Both Duncan and Ramsay forgot all about body-checking and the latter was replaced by Art Smith. The. youngster who joined the club last Saturday at least used his body and he handed out some sturdy jolts to the invaders, but by the time he had got his body and shoul- der working and the forwards had decided to use their bodies to stop the invaders the damage had been dope. The veteran injured his shoulder in Ottawa two weeks ago last night, but he cannot nurse it along until next Summer. The only way to stop the Pirates is to sub- due them by body-checking early in the game and when the Leafs tried to stop them by poke-checking or skating them into the corners their cause was lost.
