Feb. 14.--Dis- cussing prices of foodstuffs and manufactured goods in Canada, during the period 1925 to 1927, the Monthly Letter of the Royal Bank of Canada says: "In contrast with the situation in Canada, where the price struc- ture has consistently favored the farmer, particularly during tne past three years, the farmer in many other parts of the world has found that his bale of cotton, his load of maize, or his bushel of po- tatoes could be sold at a price which would enable him to buy only about two-thirds as much manufactured goods as formerly. In reality, his difficulties have been even greater than this statement would suggest, since wages, rent and taxes--his costs--have in most cases, increased by at least 100 per cent. . Where the individual farmer has been unable to marked- ly increase his production, the changing relationships of. prices have reduced the purchasing pow- er of the farm family by about one-half. - This reduction in the purchases of the agricultural popu- lation has prevented the expan- sion of world commerce to a nor- mal level. "The satisfactory crops in Can- ada and the persistence of relative- ly favorable world prices for those products which come from Cana- dian farms have been important factors in establishing prosperity. While it is true that almost all of Canada has experienced good times during this period, the cut- standing factor in the situation has been the improvement in the position of the farmer. According to the index mumber of the Do- minion Bureau of Statistics. the typical price level for vegetable products in the past three years hae haen 70 per cent. above pre- war levels, while the general price index has been only about 55 per cent. above that of 1913. In fact, in this period the index for ves- etable products has been above 180 in six months, and below 160 in only three months. out the period the price of wheat has been relatively high, and the benefited 'by the price fluctuations which have taken place. "The prices of animal products, however, have -been by no means satisfactory. Their index mumber has been below 140 during nearly one-half the period and above 150 in inly two months. Overprodue- 'has' been general throughout the world, and cattle, ther prices have been extremely in other countries. Hog prices have heen high, but the price of hogs. Is of relatively less import- ance than that of cattle in this country. Vegetable products, in- clpding particularly wheat and the field crops, outweigh the import- ance of animal products in Cana- dian farming to a degree which has kept the combined average price of all farm products well above the general price level These relationships will be under- stood more clearly after a study of the charts at the top of the second pare of this letter. "Within the past few .months new readjustments in price level have been taking place. The price index of vegetable products - hus dropped until in December it was within five points of parity with the general index, and that of ani- mal products' had risen 'until it was within two points of this in- dex. The rise in the price of hides and beef has been particularly marked. J "The downward movement In general price level seems to have been checked and there. has been a perceptable upward movement in the past three. months. Predic- tions from well-known statisticians in other countries state that the present outlook favors moderate strength in the" general price level.
