Needham, wealthy owner of a chain of drug stores throughout England and Ireland, has advised police he was swindled out of $140,000 February 16, by three men helieved to be members of an international confidence ring, Needham arrived here January 18, aboard the liner Malolo, the police announcement said. A man using the name of Samuel Price also was a passenger. He made Needham"s acquaintance and in- troduced himself as a Canadian, The two spent much time to- gether. One day when their auto- mobile broke down and they were waiting for it to be repaired, Pierce found a purse containing $300. Shortly a man, who later gave his name as Grainvil appeared and claimed the purse, offering Price a reward of $100. Pierce refused the reward, according to the po- lice story. The stranger, who said he had been dismissed as a stew- rd of the **Turf" Club, claimed "e had access to betting commis- 'ons, and would wager the money n a horse race in Plerce's name. The horse won, so did all the "ther horses on which Grainvil ;ubsequeptly placed bets of from $200 to $1,600 for both Plerce and Needbam. The trio then deeided to place a big bet. Needham cabled his Lon- don banker spd procured $14,000 in cash. Pierce put up $60,000. Grainvil explained the actual cash had to be placed. The trio met in Plerce's hotel room. When the whole amount-- $200,000 in cash--had been placed on a table the telephone rang and it was a summons for Needham to come to the lobby. He left the room and the money. He never saw the money again and the only time he ssw Plerce wes when the latter was leaving the hotel. There is mo "Turf" Club in Hawaii. There is no horse racing in Hawaii.
