(66-68-71) (64c) | TIME TABLES fusion in emergencies is not condu- cive to safety. The Canadian Automobile Associa- tion, in which the motor leagues of all the provinces are federated, for years has urged the need of unifi cation in traffic regulations and to its activities in no small parts is due the fact that four of our provinces changed the basic rule of the road from "keep to the left" "keep to the right" in conformity = the rule obtaining throughout the other pros vinces and all the states of the Va: the other organizations ion. Among that have labored and are striving to secure uniformity in traffic regula- tions are the Hoover conference, the interprovincial conference and thé American Automobile Association. Didn't "Stay Put." Two or three years ago it was ane nounced that the interprovincial cone ference had secured agreement among the provinces in the matter of stan dardized direction and warning signs. This is an instance where an agree- ment has not "stayed put" for both Manitoba and British Columbia re- cently have approved signs that are very different irom those selected as the standard by the interprovincial conference of which the signs erected in Ontario and Quebec are examples. It was pointed out at the time the selection of standards for signs was under consideration by the interpro- vincial conference that there was much merit in the proposal that the shape oi the sign should convey its warning and where possible suggest- ively symbolize it The example of the "cross bones" of the railway crossing signs was cited as a time honored and very familiar . if unlovely and gruesome example. The shape of signs is dis- cernable long before their lettering or symbols or even their colors are apparent let alone sufficiently clearly defined to he legible and so intelli- gible to the drivers approaching them. Bright Colors Fade It was added that while various color schemes might add to the util- ity of the signs--the color combina- tions being emblematic in a sense of the message of the signs, red being reserved, for instance, for danger-- bright. colors have a tendency to fade rapidly and badly faded signs are unsightly as well as inefficient. The black and yellow color combination of the road signs erected by the Mo- tor league in Ontario was selected he- cause tests showed this combination to he the most legible under all con- ditions. Tests conducted by the adminis. tration oi British Solumbia has re- sulted in the sclection of the yellow and black color combination by the Pacific province and signs in these colors are heing erected there. Manitoba Signs Manitoba erecting warning signs of four distinct shapes. These are round, diagonal, octagonal and square, and are being put up between 300 and 400 yards from the point of danger to which they draw attention. The round signs indicate a railway crossing ahead: the diamond signs urge slow driving because of the proximity of a sharp corner, a de- cline, etc.; the octagonal signs tell motorists to stop, and the square signs mean exercise extreme caution | because of cross roads, chool grounds, and so on. These Manitoba signs will he erect- | ed on only certain highways this year, but the department plans to continue the work next year until all main roads in Manitoba are made BS sale as sign posting makes pos- NC CAREFULLY CONCEALED ALE TOSSED INTO NIAGARA RIVER _ Niagara Falls, N.Y., March 18--A freight car loaded with Canadian ale was seized by United States Customs inspectors in the north end New York Central freight yards, andthe ale was thrown into the river from a rail- road bridge spanning the Gorge.
