(71-b) Room and Board PROPOSED RAILWAY PUZZLES LONDON Forest City Fears Steam Road Would Cut L. & P.S. Earnings London, Ont, March 25.--The City of London, which owns the London and Port Stanley Railway, St. Tho- mas, which is served by London's line, and other municipalities along that route are in a quandary as to what attitude they should take to- ward the proposal of John H. Teall, Tillsonburg, to build a steam line from Port Burwell, via Aylmer and Kingsville, to London. The City Council of London, unwilling to deal with the puzzle, has passed to the London and Port Stanley Commis- sion the request of J, Frank White, M.P, {for instructions concerning what he should say in the House of Commons concerning Mr, Teall's application for a charter for the Lon- don and Port Burwell Railway, London does not want to block a legitimate development, but wonders whether the proposed new line will take business from the city's own railway, which is already in trouble enough because of motor bus and truck competition. Mr, Teall is taken far more seriously than the average romoter, because he is no amateur, wenty-five or thirty years ago he built a steam rairoad from Port Bur- well to Ingersoll. He operated it in- dependently and quite successfully for twenty years and then sold out to the C.P.R,, which still operates it. That line developed Port Burwell as a lake port. In the present case, Mr. Teall says he has heavy financial backing from American sources and that he will not sell securities to com- plete his scheme, BRITAIN AFTER AERIAL RECORDS London, March 25.--Official British attempts will be made this year on the four principal world air records--speed, height, dura- tion and long-distance non-stop, The attempt on the speed record, now held by Italy, will be made at Calshot within two months, For the height record, also held by Italy at 38,800 feet, a super= Bristol Bulldog plane {is under- going tests. For the other attempts special machines are heing built near London which are to he driven by powerful Napier engines, and which, it is expected, will be able to remain in the air more than sixty hours and fly 5,000 miles, These expectations compare with the present record of 52 hours and the Chamberlin-Levine record of 3,905 miles.
