Tumes, Representative Phones: Office, 887; Res, 300 Bowgranville Radio Station * Fourth Largest in Empire (By Staff Reporter) Bowmanville, April 23.--To wit- ! pess the operation of a modern su- per broadcasting station gives one the impression that a story from ian amazing book of some famous . fietion writer is bein enacted. C.K. . G.W., Canada's Cheerio Station, sit- uated on a high bluff on the very . edge of Lake Ontario is the fourth . largest and most powerful broad- «+ |casting station in the British Em. pire. Its high towers, 125 feet of steel reaching towards the heavens, are the means of which musie, dra- ma, tragedy, comedy--everyting in the nature of sound is sent out un. stintingly to the highest points of civilization northward, to the fay ithest points southward, and to the Mother Country to the eastward. Wires so small that the eye may hardly see thems, glass tubes that are worth anywhere from $500 up- ward each, electrical fixtures carry- ing many thousands of electric volts, all making up the operating business of a modern radio station. Little do we, the unknowing public, realize the importance of a radio station to the country, Little do we, when we voice a complaint against statle, or interference, know just what a benefit to eivilization,.to the nation, the radio transmitting sta- tion is. What right have we, any- way, to rise up and complain te authorities that the power of the nearest station is bothering our range of selection on our own lit- tle creap sets? And our complaints seem more unjust, more to be des- pised, when we are given programs of the highest merit, such as are relayed through CKGW, At the time the writer witnessed the astounding operation of the gi- part ant mechanism, loss of speech was probably the mildest way to ex- press surprise, It was close on to five o'clock, and the station was scheduled to begin its broadcasting sharply at the hour, At 4:45 o'clock a verbal mes- sage was received through the pri- vate telephone line from the stu- dio in Toronto, at the King Edward Hotel, which was to the effect that a test was being carried out, to make sure that every thing was in readiness so as not to keep the thousands of eager listeners wait- ing when the minute came. It was stated that fifteen minutes before every program was given to the alr, this operation was enacted. What a system is 'carried out for our benefit, with absolutely no 'strings' attached! One minute to five, the "busi- ness commenced. The operator was in a dozen places at once, turning this handle, pushing that lever, and regulating the volume. One of the most important operations, he said, was the regulation of the flow of electricity into the tubes, This point was one of his chief concerns, He watched the dials carefully, testing each in rotation, until the sound was even buoyant, it seemed, and delightful, With the roll of the generators and the sound of the electricity as it made this or that connection throughout the monster set, the place took on thg WATERWAYS DEAL WITH BRITAIN NEVER WOULD BE SATISFACTORY, SAYS BARGE CANAL ADVOCATE New York, April 22. -- Former Governor William L. Harding of Jowa, president of the Great Lakes St. Lawrence Tidewater Association invaded virtually hostile territory here when he met Colonel Edward C. Carrington, chairman of the Great Lakes-Hudson Waterways Associa tion, in a debate at the City Club, on the route to be followed by the deep waterway from the Great Lakes to the Atlantic, An interesting audience filled the auditorium, and R. T., Childs, chair- man, turned the assemblage into an open discussion following the debate, Carrington Attacks Sincerity Running through the argument presented by Colanel.Carrington was an attack on the sincerity of those advocating the St. Lawrence route and an appeal to the patriotic im- ulses of his audience to utilize the ew York State Barge for of the route, thereby avoiding 'entangling alliances" with a British Dominion, Neither raised the question of whether a route from the Great Lakes to the Atlantic for a deep waterway would be established even- tually. Former Governor Harding, who holds that he has the power of seven- teen Western states behind him, took the afirmative of the question: "Re- solved, That the deep waterway con- necting the Great Lakes with the At- lantiec Ocean shall be by the St, Law- rence River rather than by the New York State route and the Hudson River." He sald the open sailing route around the St. Lawrence would de- crease the cost of raw materials and foodstuffs for New York consumers, as compared with the other route; that the minimum traffic of the St, Lawrence route would be 18,600,000 tons, as compared with 14,900,000 tons by the "up-hill and down route," via the barge canal. 'The value In a single year to the farmers alone, he asserted, would equal the capital cost of the St. Lawrence waterway, which he views as a na- tional plan. "I do not believe that some of i | those snakes, two coral snakes, advocating the St. Lawrence want a canal built at all" as- Colonel Carrington in reply, citing the fact that New York State Sees Montreal Unduly Favored He attacked the advocates of the St. Lawrence route as threatening to favor Montreal over New York as a shipping center and pointed out that the St. Lawrence route was dangerous for ocean-going vessels af- ter November 1, when the insurance period closes, New York state had bought the right to speak in the question, he as- serted, by its Investment in the barge canal and would go ahead with lans of an ocean-waterway from the reat Lakes regardless of whether the St. Lawrence route was adopted, A partnership with Great Britain never had been or never would be satisfactory to the people of this country, he asserted, of the St. Law. rence plan, DITHARS BRINGS oNAKES 0 U.S. Reptile Expert Returns from Honduras With Films and Rare Specimens New York, April 19, -- Dr, Ray- mond L. Of all these reptiles the whipsnake is, per- haps, the most curious, Dr, Ditmars said, It is seven feet long, and less than a finger's breadth in diameter. The vine snake, he said, is mildly poisonous, while the giant toad--ten inches from stem to stern--exudes a noxious saliva that acts like a local anaesthetic on whosnever is bitten. Dr, Ditmars said he got some of this 80 far as to play with yellow beards aspect of an ocean vessel, The roar of the motors in this case was muffi- ed, but on looking out of a side window, and observing the lake, one's imagination only needed to do the rest, Then the concert was heard, a soloist with his clear voice and the toneful accompaniment of the piano made one wish one was before a fire listening. What interested Dr. Ditmars above all was the yellow beard. "We had some unusual and exciting experi- ence," he said, "and we also learned some truly astonishing things. We saw snakes so deadly that a man goes blind a few minutes after being bitten. Even the bite of an infant of one of these reptiles--say, one a few days old--will cause death, It is rare for the yellow beard to give birth to a litter as low as fifty. Usually a litter consists of seventy- five. The barba amarilla is so called because of its bright yellow chin and throat. It grows to a length of eight fleet. Dr, Ditmars captured eight yellow beards on a banana planta- tion.
