Ellerington, has come to an end after seventeen days. No fewer than 14,005 questions have been asked and answered and an average of 62,000 words spoken daily. The total cost of the inquiry will be $50,000. The inquiry into the Chief Constable's appeal from the Watch Committee's decision ta re- tire him cost the borough $5,000. The recommendation of the tri- bunal of which the president Is T. Hollis Walker, K.C., will be for- warded to the Home Office. Sir Walter Greaves-Lord, K. Watch Committee, in his address, Dert Dance contended that five members of the constables branch board had shown that the Chief Constable had met acted fairly toward them and that for more than five years the board tad not beem able to function pro- perly. The majority of the Watch Com- mittee, he said, was formed of members of a comparatively new party, and he was not doing them an injustice to say that people who came new to local government had much to learn equally with people who have been doing it for some years, CONTENTIONS ARE ARISING OVER VOTE IN MONTREAL Montreal, May 3.--Contestations arising from the municipal elec- tions on April 2 have now reached ten. Village to Probe Mystery Middletown, N.Y., May 3.--Wild noises coming from a swamp at Spring Valley are alarming and ter- rifying the inhabitants. The noise is said to be the same that was head for a month four years ago, and then ceased. The time at which the ery is most heard is be- tween three and four o'clock in the morning and the noise can be heard a mile. The swamp covers about twenty acres and the sound never maves from a clump of brush, ferns and bog, about one hundred feet from the solid shore of the swamp. No person as far as can be learned, has ever ventured into the swamp. Every possible effort is being made to solve the mystery. which is puzzling all the inhabi- tants of the place, especially the superstitious.
