(Whane 10022 NICHOLLS Garage COURTICE SPASSENGER COACH " r - We wonder if it has ever struck the fans of this city what oppor- tunities are presented to them to enjoy such high class exhibitions, of three major sports--Lacrosse, Baseball and Soccer. The lacrosse played right in this city as beiore mentioned is oi the highest calibre in the universe, Let that sk m! New York city, the for everything supposed to furnish real .thrills, is unable to pro- duge 1 r exhibitions oi lacrosse of O.A.L.A. standdrd for the simple reason t they haven't the players. The States are progressing in rapid fashign, however, as is their wont, but it will be a few years be- 'fore they begin to turn out players of any account. daking this into consi tion is there any good reason why Alexandra Park should not be filled to capacity at every fixture: In 'baseball, although we don't claim to be rivals to the major leagues, we would hike to impress upon the fans the fact that the local entry mn the C.O.AB.L, are per- forming in one of the best amateur loops in the Dominion. Oslers, oi - the Toronto Senior League, three years ago won the amateur baseball championship oi America, and the winners of the Central Ontario Lea- gue are in the play-offs with the Toronto champions. In soccer we have where in Canada. And the Motors eleven have yet to lose a game, Not that we think the teams aren't §euting the desired attention, for of course we realize the season is hardly opened. Still a few argu- ments for support might prevent some fans from lapsing into a state of coma on sunshiny aiternoon and balmy cvenings, just aiter they step across the threshold of the home. We would call your attention to the letter which appeared on this page yesterday, anent last Saturday's soccer game at Alexandra Park when G.M.C, met Toronto Scottish in' a National league encounter, We admit we didn't sce the game and thefeiore aren't qualified to give an individual opinion, but we have heard reports irom various Oshawa supporters who can be relied upon, and the consensus of opinion is that the game was a clean affair until the last few minutes, when Halli- well, the Scottish goalkeeper, made an entirely unwarranted attack on the referee, following a penalty kick, Toronto papers then publish- ed reports of the game the following Monday that pictured the Scot- big, bad savages "that ain't done right by our Nell" The Toronto papers can hardly be blamed for that however, not having time to personally investigate every report. The whole thing lies in the fact that one of the Scottish players is known to be in the habit of "cover- ing" the soccer games and hence the entirely untruthful report. Osh- awa fans know the facts and are also acquainted with the sports- manlike tactics of the General Motors teams. The Scottish arc last years' champions and apparently loathed the thought of losing a game or finishing on cven terms. The "play the game" rule should be first and foremost in every line of sport; rough-house tactics belong to the bowery, The officials of the League should take drastic action. This Belanger-Rocco fracas down at Toronto next Tuesday night has the fight fans all het up and rightly so. Rocco is tougher than a boarding house steak but none ever accused Belanger of any Sunday school attributes. Certainly the fans will see two of the hardest hitting flyweights in the profession when the Toronto homebrews get together, Rocco's rise 1s even more phenomenal than Belanger's, the fighting young Italian-Canadian making his pre debut in Detroit just three months ago. In fact we can remember not so long ago when Rocco hadn't passed his entrance. We don't know whether he has even yet, but the things he needs to know Tuesday arc learnt in the school of experience. 1his boy Belanger is hardly of world championship calibre, even though he did wear the laurels for a scant few weeks, Frankie Genaro showed him how much he didn't know in their second mecting. In any case the Canadian championship is sure to go to Toronto and with the right handling the winner should be just about ready to take on all comers about six months from now. Belleville's victory over Deloro was the only game played in the Central League yesterday, Kingston being "all wet" for the second time in six days with the result that the tilt with Peterboro had to be can- celled, The weather man apparently is having a lot of fun with "Joe" Daly just when the fans are all set to pack the park and swell the receipts, Deloro gave Belleville an interesting battle before finally admitting defeat, but they were up against stellar twirling from Gibson who let them down with four hits. Belleville cracked out seven off Jack's delivery, The runs came in the third and fourth innings, the winners registering two in the third and the final run of the game in the next session, Belleville has won both starts in the home town and haye all the natives with them to a man, The officials for the opening of the ladies softball league at the Colleg- jate grounds tomorrow night have finally been chosen. GAME AT LIMESTONE CITY IS POSTPONED Kingston, Ont, May 30,-- Rain is proving a hoodoo here for games in the Central On- tario Baschball League. The first game with Oshawa last Friday had to he postponed and rain tonight caused a post- ponement of the game sched- uled with Peterboro, - C.0.B.L, CHATTER (By Squirrell) Burgoyne & Schultz are making the boys all travel at a fast clip, and the squad are bears for pun- ishment, The more work they are given the more they seem to want and the spirit of the team im- presses everyone, Every player is right in there in complete harmony, doing his level best for the team, and for the management. That's the right spirit to have in a ball club! The hurlers are all coming along nicely, while the infielders are go- ings great guns, in fact the whole squad from the catching depart ment out are right up on the bit now. We hear that "Joe" Daley swal- lowed a bat bag whole, last Satur- day, down in Kingston, after he had put the brakes on the adding machine, and found that his slug- ging pets had come out second best. Too bad, Joe! Page Lonnie Purvis, Belleville CN.R.'s are here Sgf- urday afternoon. Walt Gerow will lead his classy Belleville Nationals into Oshawa on Saturday aftergoon next, to take the Schultz-Burgoyne handled Gen- eral Motors team,on in a schedul. ed C.0.A.B.L. fixture. And what a rare old battle ft promises to be--"Peeny" Mills, "Wicky" Ross, "Harry" Mills, will all be on hand doing their best to knock off the league leaders. The locals will be in there fighting all the time too, and are determined to protect their bard-éarned lead. Belleville have some new faces on their line-up, motably "Dusty" Flagler--who was Belleville's hero in their opening game, through his terrific hitting. Im "Vinny" Utron- ki, the Nationals have a hurling star of the first water, this is the boy who set the Ottawa Valley Dis- rict on fire last year with his bril- liant pitching. He is reported to have turned down "pro" offers last fall, preferring the. amateur ranks. Belleville also has "Hoot" Gib- son, all pepped up for mound duty and this boy is real--It was Gibson who humbled the hard-clouting Kingston Pbnies in the Relleville 'Bowmanville 124r3-4 opener.
