(129-131); OFA BETWEEN7 AND 8 MILES DEEP, New Method of Met.unng Depths Has Been Devised T Loudon, June 1.--How deed'is the sea? The geography bogks say the greatest known depth of the ocean is five miles, but a new meth- od of measuring the depths has been devised and it is now kndwn that the sea is between seven amd cight miles deep. Admiral H, P. Douglas, the hydrographer of the navy, in the course of 8 recent ads dress here made an allusion to the echo-sounding apparatus now used to ascertain the ocean depths. In the last three years navigators have been extremely interested to see on revised Admiralty charts (which are used by seamen of all na- tions) the plotting of unfamiliar sea depths, and Admiral Douglas, explaining this, said that the new method is adding greatly to men's knowledge of the sea. Three years ago, when the wire lead apparatus was stil] being used, the greatest depth which had been ° plumbed was five miles, but it was clear that in many places the sea was deeper than could pe penetrate ed by the wire. How much could not be discovered. But the new method there is no limit to the depths which can be ascertained, and German, American, and Japan- ese ships are constantly reporting colossal depths. These are mark- ed on the Admiralty charts. There was a time when no plot- tings were made which had not been backed by a specimen of the bottom» of the sea, but with the new method there is no need to doubt the accuracy of the depths reported. The greatest up to the present have been réported hy the German survey ship Emden in the Eastern Archipelago. They, vary between seven and eight miles. - wo STENOGRAPHER Louis S. Hyman, North.
