HOOVER THE SUPERMAN (Ottawa Jburnal) When we were very young, and used to read stories for ambitious little boys about supermen who~be- came legislators in the halls where they once ran errands. we were tremendously thrilled about their infinite eapacity for work. Later, when we grew up, and met and dallied and swapped yarns with some of those giants, we somehow became sadly disillusioned. They selves, That is why wé feel like saying "applesauce{" to a story about Mr. Hoover that we've read in the New York Times. Mr. Hoover according to the Times' writer, is an extraordinary man. To begin with, he goes to bed every night sharp at 10 o'clock and rises at 7.30. Now nine andi a half hours in bed somewhat shocks us, fond as we are of our pillows; but that is not what we're coming at. The Times goes on to say that Mr. Hoover works 12 hours at his office every day. That, it will be observ- ed, leaves Mr. Hoover with but two and a half hours for other things. The writer then tells us that Mr, Hoover dictates to a stenographer every morning hefore breakfast and every night after digner. Allow- ing him 15 minutes in the morning and 30 minutes in the evening for this, Mr. Hoover is left with but an hour and a % out of his 24. As, according to the Times, he spends an hour each day in talk and plea- sure with his family, eats "three hearty meals," bathes and shaves and dresses and undresses himself, he must, it will be seen, perform with extraordinary rapidity, But the Times leaves its grand smash for the last. "Does Mr. Hoover read?" it asks; and after answering In the afirmative, it puts the further question: "What sort of books,' 'The answer to this is that he is anh enormous read er of books on science," economies, philisophy, and also detective yarns, With this, we threw the paper away, The thought of Mr. Hoover being an enormous reader of books on scl mics and philo- TOURISTS ACCOMMODATION and boarders. GIRLS WILL BE BOYS (Ottawa Journal) If you have any doubt that girls will be boys just watch some of the feminine members of the youngest generation playing base- ball, or . what passes for bases ball, in these degenerate days of playground ball. They play the game exactly as do their brothers and in their play they indicate the passing of one of the favor- ite literary tests of manhood, bearing the stamp of Mark Twain and many others. Do you remember how Huck Finn in his female disguise was caught by the farmer's wife? Well, that tests it out. ON ("Engineering," London) . In 1924, studies were begul' with a view of determining the poss. sibilities of utilizing the great amount of water power sald to be ° capable of development on the, . lower Congo River, near the West Coast of Africa. These were continued last September, It . is said that no less than one-fourth of the available water power of ° the world is to be found on this. one stream, and that as much &% 100,000,000 h.p. could be develop ed in its lower reaches. It is & problem, however, to find a use to which this amount of power could be put, if: developed. Nearly half the potential water : power in the world occurs in Af- rica, according to the U.S. Geo= logical Survey. This is due to the : fact that the continent of "Afrfea is essentially a great plateau em which the streams become large * before they subsequently fall rae ther abruptly to the sea. Northe ern and southern Africa, because of thelr low rainfall, which is poorly distributed, have only small water power resources, but trapi- cal Africa, especially the Congé : basin, has a heavy rainfall, which in connection with the chardeter- {stic topography of the continemty-. results in great water power poten. tialities, The drainage basin of the Congo River and {its tributaries covers about 1,600,000 square miles, nearly all of which is well witered, Having 17,000 pipes and 208 steps and claimed to be the largest iit the world, the organ in the cathedral at' Passau, Germany, was dedicated re»: cently, : Lis a rn That the cause of acute rheumae tism would 'be found in a microbe was recently declared by Prof, W, H.
