Hin THURSDAY, JULY 3, 1928 FROM FISHING TRIP a [Premier Obeerves Develop. ment of North Shore of St. Lawrence Quebec, July 4.~Back from a dishing trip on the North Shore, Premier Taschereau spent a busy day Monday even though it was a legal holiday, in his office at, the Parliament Buildings, catching up with the voluminous amount of mail and correspondence that had accumulated during his absence. The Premier returned to Que- bec on Sunday evening, accompani- ed by Sir Lomer Gouin, former Premier of Quebec, and Chas. Lane tot, K.C., assistant Attorney-Gen- eral, and stated "both in going down and coming up the St, Lawre ence one could not help but notice the development of the north shore, The number of industries has in- creased, while the people seem to be happy." Eye Care and ye Strain If eyesight conservation is going to mean anything, is going to at- tain to anything, and there is every reason to believe that it will; our own patients prove it so and I hope to have sufficient space proof that optometry is in a posi- tion to play an important part in sight saving and eyesight conser vation, Before giving an outline of Optometry and the optometrist, I cannot leave the above remarks without adding or stressing the importance of study to the parents, teachers, school nurses, doctors and optometrists, that they may each know their limitations and responsibilities to society when sight saving means so much. Anne de Beaupre during Sun- day, there being as many as 900 au- tomobiles counted at one time, Pilgrimages from Montreal and Montmorency were the two organ- ized parties, but taking advantage of the fine weather a large number of people. from Quebec and vicinity made their way to the shrine, where the Redemptorist Fathers expect a huge throng on the feast day of Ste. Anne, July 26, THE FAMOUS TOUR OF OOUN- TRASTS "ACROSS CANADA AND BACK" A striking feature of this year's "Across Canada and Back Tour", which leaves North Toronto station 1.00 p.m., on July 23 under the au- spices of Dean Laird, is the fact that many tourists are coming from Great Britain to take part in the journey. The special all steel mil- lion dollar train which will carry the party across the Dominion is the equal in all respects to the fa- mous "Trans-Canada, Ltd." There are no difficulties to confront the rector, who has already piloted sev- en similar trips, has made the way smooth beforehand. Bookings for the tour are already exreptionally heavy and all previous records are expected to go by the hoard. The ftinerary includes stops at all the important cities and towns en route and the beauty dgots in the Rocky Mountains, Banff and Lake Louise, bungalow camps and indus- trial centres. A sail across Koote- pay Lake, a steamship trip from Vancouver to Victoria and return and another cruise down the Great Lakes add variety to a holiday both delightful and educational. There is not a moment in the twenty one deys wasted and everywhere throughout the western lines a most hearty welcome awaits the vi- sitors. Everything is included from Toronto and return in the sum of $330.00. Ask W. Fulton, Canadian Pacific Building, Toronto, for Tour litera- ture now. NESS (By Jas. W, Barton, M.D.) Registered in accordance with the Copyright Act. As you know a great many cases of deafness are due to the closure of the little tube, the eustachian tube, that extends from the throat to the middle ear. Air emters the mouth or nose and goes up this tube to the middle ear, and thus gives air pressure against the im- ner side of the ear drum. Thus with the air entering the outer ear against the drum, and with this air on the inside, the drum is kept tight and vibrates when sound strikes it. You can understand that if air doesn't get up on the inside that the drum will not vi- brate, For many years our ear, nose, and throat specialists have been usiny various methods to keep this lit- tle tube to inner ear open. Blowing air up the tube by means of a spe- cial air bag, opening it up with in- struments and even with the finger, are the methods used, One of the suggestions given was that the pa- tient should hold the nose tightly with his fingers, close his mouth, and endeavor to blow air out the closed mouth, As, the air could not get out the closed mouth ft would go up the little tube to the ear and thus open it up more ful. y. And now a British physician, Dr. V. Nesfleld, tells of an operation he has perfected which Is of use when the closing of this little tube is the cause of the deafness. His method is to 'make a new passape leading from the outside into the cavity of the middle ear behind the ear drum." "This Incidentally opens this little eustachian tube as the middle ear is no longer a closed cavity." The middle ear is drained and the mucous membrane is rendered healthy. Dr. Nesfield nas operated on more than 200 patients, from the ages of 4 to 70, with brilliant re- sults in some and others with no success, The improvement in the hearing of many patients who have been deaf for thirty years has heen as- tonishing, and in no case has the condition ever heen worse after the operation. In many the deafness has heen arrested, while in the great major- ity the hearing has been markedly improved. Remember that this operation {is for the deafness due to trouble in this little tube, and would not ap- ply to deafness due to other causes. If you or any member of your fam- fly are afflicted with deafness, ask your family doctor for the name of fon about this, ISSUES EDICT J ON BULLFIGHTS -- al Paris, July 5.--As a result of com- plaints from British and American tourists the Mayor of Vichy has issued an edict that bull-fights may no longer be held unless the ani. mals are put to death, A fortnight ago a wounded animal escaped from the matadors and caused a panic among the spectators. ciety for the protection of animals, SE REGENT | TAXI 148 Simcoe St. S.
