"My plans are not definite," Hodgson told an interviewer here, "but that is what I would like to do, My home is in Toronto, my family and all my relatives live in Canada and I received my early education, musical and ofherwise, there." Leslie Hodgson came to New York eight years ago after an early career in Europe and Britain. He was born in a small village in Dur- ham County, Ontario, and went from there to Toronto and from Toronto to Europe. The police have positive identification of a third man, whose name they are wittholding, but they are hampered in thelr chase of the ban®%, leader--the man who, it is claimed, was brought in to direct the operation of a long-planned job--because of the fact that to date he has never been photo- graphed, and as successfully elud- ed capture «1 all of his numerous crimes, save a hootlegging charge. Jdentity of the pilot of the big Buick car used by the bandits in their rush to and from the scene of the robery is still beyond the police, $7,486.85 Recovered Of the $120,000 {in cash which disappeared with valuable bonds and securities up Simcoe street. in the fleeing ear, $7,436.85 has been recovered to date by the pol- ice The recovered cash, police say, is made up of $2,268 that had' been secreted under a step inside the Royce avenue apartment of Findlay McLeod, Sr., $589 that was removed from the clothing of his wife, $4,018 which was found in a tomato can eache in the back garden of Alex. McLeod's Laing rtreet address, $560 from a hole in the ground beneath some berry bushes in the same garden, ang $11.85 from within the house it- self, and $385 from above a door in the basement of McKibon's De- troit barber shop--the remains of $1,000 which + he fs alleged to have received at first as his share in the hold-up. More may be cach- ed away here in Toromto, or the American gunmen, bosses and di- rectors of the job from the time they arrived here, may have de- manded the lion's share and got away with it. The "job™ the police state, was partly planned here, and partly planned in Detroit. The germ of its execution is believed, police say, to have grown up with Find- ley McLeod, £*, and MecKibbon while they were doing their Kings- ton "stretches" and occupying neighboring cells From the mo ment the robbery was committed the police suspected the former, A Pinkerton operative was call- ing on his place next day in the guise of a mall carrier. A letter from McKibbon to McLeod is said to have revealed that the former was dissatisfied with his first "out" of the $120,000 melon, and that he was personally coming down to Toronto for more, Correct or Incorrect as the story may be, it is a known fact that the barber and his comely wife were shadowed all the way from Detroit to the C.P.R, sta- tion at West Toronto, where they detrained. Police admit this. They also admit that they also took up the pair's trail at the sta- tion and arrested them before Me- Leod, who was to meet them with $242 in twp-dollar bills, the police claim, could effect the transfer, McLeod, it is alleged, ran away, and was arpested shortly after- ward. The two-dollar bills--all bearing advertised serial numbers ---had been turned over to his THE OSHAWA DAILY TIMES, THURSDAY, juLY 12, 1928 wife's keeping in the fhterval, police say, and were found im her possession when she was search ed Arvested at Home Alex. McLeod's arrest was made at his Laing street address not § minutes after he had whirled up in his taxi to change his clothes, with the evident intenton of "beat ing" it. He had every reason to know, police say, that his brother had been apprehended a short while earlier, McLeod is a ner- vous individual; so nervous, the police contend, that he threw twe packages of bills into the bulrush' swamp at the foot of his proper ty, the day following the robbery, and left it there until the persua- sion of his brother Findley, six hours .later, led him to dig them loose from the muck and, with the aid of his brother, bury them in the cans, from which they were finally pried loose. Statement of the woman who fis held as a material witness by the police is reported to have upset the calculations at 40 Laing street and to have alded materially the course of investigation the police have since pursued. The Second Blow Sullivan's arrest -- the second blow in the serles of police cracks at the bandit organization--was was made Tuesday morning, after, police say, two of the mail elerks whom he is alleged to have "stuck up" walked into his little tobac- co store, hought -clgars, took a good look at the man behind the counter, and then walked outside. to signal the walting detectives that their "man" was inside. Po- lice will not discuss how this man was taken or the elrcumstances IAAL [8-183 leading up to his capture. Barring two .32-calibre revol- vers which were found in an oat- meal tin in the flat of Findlay McMLeod, Sr.,--and these were un- loaded, and may not have figur- ed in the robbery--no trace has been uncovered of the "artillery" --sawed-offs, riot gun and auto- matics--which were first reported to have been used in and around the mail car in terrifying the pos- tal clerks Into submission, and into handing ever the money bags, which were found, two days later, slashed and empty, in the N\ abandoned Buick on Hudson Drive, a northerly residential sec tion. Police have made a thorough search of all propertv concerned in the case. The Royce street home of McLeod only yielded up its hoard of stolen currency after three attempts to locate it had been made, the last consisting in the ripping up of the whole floor ing on the first landing, At the Laing street address it took con- siderable digging in several corn. ers of the yard to unearth the loot hidden there.
