It is understood that this includes demands for am apolgy from the Nationalist Government, the payment of compensation, pun- ishment for those responsible for the outrages and gurantees for the future, "NHITE AUSTRALIA SOUND IF COUPLED WITH PROGRESS G. A. Julius Makes Report on Scientific And Indus- trial Conditions (By Canadian Press) Sydney, N.S.W., July 11.--The "White Australia" policy is sound only when coupled with real pro- gress in industrial development, according to G. A. Julius, chair- man of the Council for Scientitte and Industrial Research, who rec- ently returned from a visit to Eur ope and America. "We cannot maintain 'the exist- ing short hours and high wazes on the 'White Australia' policy unless we keep pace with the rest of the world in solving problems of science and industrial economics" said Mr. Julius, "Although Aus- tralia has many advantages in pro- duction, the enormous handicap of distance can be overcome only vy scientific marketing. We must study the needs of prospective buy- ers. The increasing use of arti- fieial silk promises materially to change many of the factors govern- ing the kind of wool required. Ar- tificial silk will compete with the coarser wools, "The same thing applies to Aus- tralia's systems. It may he that some other crop could be more easily marketed than the one it is pro- posed to put in." Another problem for Australia, said Mr. Julius, was the discovery of a cheap form of land transport, The country could not afford to go on huilding railroads. Some form of motor was needed whien could haul loads at a cheaper rate over buck traders, so that the present limit for farms at 20 miles from a railway could be made 40 miles. OASIS FOUND IN KALAHARI DESERT Expedition Penetrates One of Globe's Few Unex- plored Regions Johannesburg, July 13.--Discov=- ery of an immense area of the fin- est grazing country in the centre of the great Kalahari Desert, one of the last portions of the globe as yet unexplored, was reported by an Imperial Government expedition led by Capt. Hills, which reached Victory Falls, Rhodesia, one of the most hazardous modern desert ven- tures. Placing an oasis on tne map on one of the world's blank spots confirms romantically per- sistent native legends that the in- hospitable Kalahari held a conceal- ed secret of fertile country rumor- ed to he unknown to civilization. All previous expeditions which ploughed into the waterless wastes, however, failed to return. The sue- cess of the Hills expedition is an- other triumph of automobile trac- tion, The party, taking off from the southwestern side of the des- ert, travelled the whole distance in trucks, the actual crossing of the desert occupying 12 days. The explorers report that the lost oasis, which is deseribed as better than the best ranching land in Rho- desia, took three days to traverse, No indication that it was inhabit. ed was seen by the expedition, By contrast, other parts of the desert crossed were most desolate, and the explorers finally were com- pelled to travel continuously four days and nights without sleep in order to reach their destination bes fore their water supply was ex- hausted,. They once narrowly es- caped destruction from a 12-mile wide bush 'fire. The expedition claims to have exploded the theory that the Kalahari is a breeaug ground for the locusts pestering Africa. WAR BRIDES FORM AN ASSOCUATION All Married Allied Soldiers During Great War Re- spond to Advertisement (By Canadian Press) Chicago, Ills, July 13.--An ob- scure advertisement inserted in the classified section of a Chicago news- paper brought together - eighteen British: girls in a war brides' club. They all married allied soldiers dur- ing the Great War. Mrs. Loy Maloney, English-born wife of a United States army cap- tain, conceived the notion for trans- planted war brides to band together. The response to the advertisement was instant, a dozen British girls be- ing linked in the club by the com- mon bonds of birth and of marriage to soldiers of the allies. A state charter has been obtained and the club has launched into a program. Mrs. Phyllis Sheehan is president of the club and Mrs. Gert- rude Drager is secretary, { Street, schemes for bringing more | land into circulation by irrigation | Canadian National Rys.
