Gunson and family are visiting at the home of the latter's mother, Mrs. Dodds, Hamilton, Dr. R. T. MacLaren was called to Balmoral, Man., last Friday to the bedside of his father, Rev. J. B. MacLaren, pastor of Balmoral Unit- ed Church, who was reported seri- ously ill. It has been learned since that Rev. MacLaren who was well over seventy years passed away last Sunday. The deceased pastor was well known here as he was in charge of the Brooklin and Colum- bus Preshyteriap churches for a number of yearsy ' - rn -------- REV. J. B. MCLAREN ¢ Whitby, Aug. 17--Dr. R. T. Mec- Laren was called to Winnipeg on Friday last on account of the seri- ous fllness of his father, Rev. J. B. McLaren, of Balmoral, Man., who has since passed away. The de- ceased minister was well known in 'Whitby and district, as he preached for 13 years in Columbus and Brooklin Presbyterian Churches. He had been in the west for about twenty years and at the time of his death was minister of Balmoral United Church. His last visit here was in 1925 when he came east to attend the Church Union conclave in Toronto. Deceased was was an outstanding preacher and had served his church long and well. At one time he was honored by being elected moderator of the Synod of Manitoba. He had been ill only a few months and his con- dition was not considered serious. He {s survived by his wife, three sons and two daughters. The fun- eral service and interemnt took place Tuesday at Balmoral. True to the old saying that it is an ill wind which bloweth no one any good there were those who benefitted from the heat wave. GRAIN CROPS ARE MUCH IMPROVED (By Staff Reporter) Whitby, Aug. 16.--Grain crops of the district including fall wheat, oats and barley, are looking much improved on account of the spell ot fine, warm weather which has been enjoyed during the past two weeks. In the majority of cases the fall wheat has been cut and threshing has been the order of the day on many farms. Oats and barley are binder and it is to be hoped these crops may be garnered without be- ing damaged by further rainfall. E. Sarvis, Magistrate Brodie allowed the adjournment, despite continued protests by Gordon N. Shaver, K.C., special prosecuting counsel. Mr. Shaver declared that he absence of Hardie was suspicious, and the at- tituge of the missing witness was typical of the liquor business to- ward courts of Ontario.
