PAGE EIGHT THE OSHAWA DAILY TIMES, FRIDAY, AUGUST 17, 1928 WERGER TO LOWER RATESONWIRELESS Sir Campbell Stuart Shows How Canada Saved $1,000,000 INVESTMENT BACK Boon Possible to Send Whole News Pages by Telivisi Calgary, Alta., Aug. 17.--How the ir of the Eastern Cable Company and the Marconi Wire- less Company, forming the largest corporation in the British Empire after leasing the Great Britain Wireless Co., had saved a million dollars to the taxpayers of Can- ada, had freed the government of any further liabilties and would ultimately reduce materially 'the cable and wireless rates between Canada and the rast of the world, while at the same time bringing the world at the .doors of the people of Western Canada, was ex- plained here by Sir Campbell Stuart, of London, who is in Can- ada to make a report on the mer- . ger to the Canadian government. Sir Campbell arrived in Calgary Monday and gave a complete statement explaining the diffi- culties facing the British wireless * company in the way. of liabilities and increasing competition from beam wireless. He explained how the Imperial wireless and cables conference, after six months of arduous study had developed the plan by which the Eastern Cable company and the Marconi Wire- less company were to merge, pro- vided they leased the Great Britain Wireless Company and accepted the liabilities of the latter com- any. By insisting on taking rver {hese liabilites, Canada has been released from further indebtedness as well as getting back almost her entire million dollar investment. Further than that, sald siv ampbell, the conference was suc- inne a in obtaining an advisory council to sit over the merger to dontrol to an extent, the rates and revenue of the huge corporation. As a result, rates will be lowered and service between Canada and the World will be greatly improv- ¢ ed. Hugh, M. Kennedy, Chief Jus- tice of the Irish Free State when, accompanied by Mrs. Kennedy, he arrived here Tuesday from Seattle, "That is why I am particularly in- erested in examining the constitu- ional progress of the Dominion and in seeing this country at this time," e declared. , "I was one of those who drafted the legal constitution of the Irish ree State," said His Lordship. "Na- urally I have a particular interest n this country. We drafted our con- titution in 1922 and modelled it largely after that of Canada which was passed in 1867. Consequently it is a matter of mutual interest to le- gal men of both countries. We have a sympathy with one another, for we have faced the same problems, The Free State benefited by Can- ada's 'experience from 1867 on and we are still watching the progress ' of the Dominion. Of Ireland, His Lordship said that there was a tendency toward similar progress as was being experienced in Canada. Serious thinking men were devoting their lives to the building of a new nation, Winnipeg, Aug. 17.--We have not quite got used to the feeling of Em- pire, and extremists make use of the old emnity against Great Britain for political purposes, but in spite of that, mistrust is graduai.' lessening," declared Sir John Keane, Senator in the Irish Free State in an interview here Tuesday, Sir John is studying Canadian conditions for the further- ing of Empire ideas on his return, Conditions, on the whole, are much improved in Ireland, he stated. FLERTOLOSE BOTH HIS LEGS Major Carlo Del Prete Will be Operated Upon in Brazil Rio De Janeiro, Aug. 17.--The newspaper O"Journal said that a conference of physicians decided to amputate both of Major Carlo Del Prete's legs. Both Major Del Prete and his companion Major Arturo Ferrarin, who recently made a record flignt from Rome to Brazil, were injur- ed last week when the airplane they were testing crashed. There is no confirmation for the O'Journal's report, although the hospital declared that the Italian aviator's condition is grave. Dr. Brandao, noted Brazilian physician, who has been in con- stant attendanne on the two fliers, operated again on Del Prete's leg, making an incision in the posterior part of the thigh and drained the wound. AMERICAN LINERS | SALE NEXT WEEK Bids for Two Steamship Lines Will Open on November 15 Washington, Aug. 17. -- The United States Lines, including the gigantic liner Leviathan, and the American Merchant Lines will be offered for sale next week, the U. 8. Shipping Board . decided Mon- day after approving 10 different plans of sale. Bids for the two lines will be opened Nov. 165. If the ships are sold the gov- ernment will be eliminated as an operator of passenger vessels in the North Atlantic and the pride of the American Merchant Marine will pass into private hands. The sale proposals invite bids for purchase for guaranteed operation over a five-year period or over a 10-year period. If the latter guar- antee period is selected, the sale contract will be modified and financial requirements will be pro- portionately reduced after the first year the contract is in effect, the board said. Under the sale plans the pur- chaser must guarantee to operate the Leviathan on a minimum of 12 round trips between New York and Europe yearly with two round trips every 60 day: from Mar. i and Dec. 31 between New York and a French and United Kingdom port.
