(tf) NURSE INDICTED FOR TWO MURDERS Fed Deadly Poison to Her Patients and Deaths Follow St. Louis, Sept. 3--Indicted for two poison murders, Mrs. Bertha Gifford, Ozark farm wife whom her Cata- wissa (Mo.) neighbors called the "good Samaritan," has confessed she fed arsenic to three persons of the many she "ministered to" and who died suddenly, Sunburned and plump, the fifty- six-year-old woman now hides, frightened, under a blanket in her Franklin County cell, while Dr. James Stewart, State Health missioner, and Prosecuting Attorney F. H. Jenny plan to exhume at least a dozen bodies of pegsons at whose deaths she was a spectator, The Franklin County grand jury that indicted her had under scrutiny seventeen deaths of persons she sat up with as volunteer nurse and to whom she handed, with soothing, sympathetic words, either medicine prescribed by a physician or a recip: of her own concoction, 'In none of the deaths was there an inquest. Several times the atterding doctor became suspicious, but Mrs. Gifford became indignant and talked about libel suits if there was any mention of postmortems, A low-voiced woman who would go anywhere on a sick call and who never missed a funeral. That was the impression Bertha Gifford made upon her neighbors, In Summer or Winter, if the roads were muddy or ice-covered, Mrs, Gifford could not be kept from hurrying to the home of a sick neighbor to "take charge." Her lined, rather dull features would light up when she talked of medicine, fever symptoms, strange maladies, what bridge parties or matinees are to town women sick beds and funerals were to the scem- ingly self-sacrificed woman. Accidents, too, fascinated her. On one occasion, accordng to persons who knew her well, she heard a man had been run over by a locomotive and jumped into her automobile to drive cight miles to view the victim. While other women covered their eyes, she stepped boldly forward and looked at the man. Touch of Death in Her Hands Leaving her own kitchen and barnyard chores, she would bathe and dose sick infants, cleanse wounds suffered in the harvest fields, bathe pessons with fever, offer solicitous advce on any subject touching dis- ease. But as year followed year and she continued to nurse the sick, her neighbors began to fear that in her knuckled hands was "the touch of death." Nine persons died under her roof, and their deaths were accom- panied by a vomiting and retching that was peculiarly consistent. Sewer Blocked The extraordinary pollution of the water supply was first noted two weeks ago. The Water Works En- gineer stated at the board session that it had been practically proven the contamination was due to the blocking by recent heavy rains of a dump-sewer at the town of Aylmer on the Quebec shore of the Ottawa River. Aylmer is situated some ten miles below this city. Too Early to Crow Dr. T. H. Lomer, medical officer of health, declared that it was yet too early to state that the Capital had entirely escaped serious water consequences as a result of the pollution. After pointing out that it took at least three weeks for typhoid fever symptoms to become apparent, he said: "It might be too soon to crow." The provincial health departments of both Ontario and - Quebec have been notified of the local situation.
