Following rain, the road was extremely slippery, and when the first car, owned and driven by Robert McNair, 2194 Queen street east, Toronto, skidded into the ditch, the others, applying their brakes as they came upon the scene, were also ditched. The most serious hurts were suffered by Dr. C. J, Wagner, 400 Jarvis street, Toronto, who receiv. ed shoulder injuries believed to be a fracture. Several ribs were broken as well, He and the other injured were attended to by Dr. Campbell, of Bradford, and pro- ceeded to their homes. The first car, after it had skid- ded, struck a post and did not leave the road entirely, This, per- 'haps, was the cause of the other spills, for to avoid striking Me- Nair's car, Walter Moynihan, 80 Elmer avenue, Toronto, who was following closely, applied the brakes and skidded into the same ditch, Considerable glass in his sedan was brokeen, but Moyni- han escaped without injury, Following Moynihan's car was a coupe, driven by Miss Lillian An- drews, 373 Parkside Drive, Toron- to. Although some yards back of the preceding auto, brakes failed to hold her car, and it plunged into the ditch, throwing bhoth Miss Andrews and her companion, Miss Doris Bews, of Waterdown, out of the car, Beyond serious shock, however, neither was hurt, Dr, Wagners car, the fourth veh- icle involved, was occupied by him. self, his wife, his daughter Jean and Miss Betty Walker, 20 Dun. donald street, Toronto, Their car, too, took to the west ditch, where the other three had gone, the only occupant injured being the driver, Dr, Wagner, who was jolted into the steering wheel, Highway Traffic Officer George Buck, of Bradford, who was soon upon the scene, summoned medi- cal help, rendered first aid and arranged for the transportation of the nine vietims, the cars being too seriously damaged to continue without major repairs, JERKED INTO WATER RUM RUNNER DROWNS Dunnville, Sept, 10, -- Her an- xiety to help a sister boat, not quite so speedy as herself, was the cause of a fatality on the rum hoat on Sunday evening, The two boats had cleared their cargoes, and were ahout six miles out when the Umbhretta offered to tow the Momora a part of the way, so as to finish the trip as nearly togeth- er as possible, A line was fastened around the Umbretta's deck cabin, but the strain was too great, and the cab- in was pulled off. A member of the crew, an Italian named Patsy Varona, was thrown into the lake and drowned. His friends searched all night and most of Monday for him, but on Monday night his body was still unrecovered, By a strange coincidence all the wreckage, including a lifeboat, had disappeared by daylight and this is still missing. 4.4 Fell Bros. 7 he LEADING JEWELERS Established 1886 12 Simcoe St. South Oshawa Luggage YOUR INITIAL FREE On Suit OCsse or Olub Bag Saywell & Son BOND ST, WEST Relieved Quickly Based upon an entirely new principle, we have the VAPURE inhalation treat- ment, which will quickly re- lieve the discomforting symptoms of head colds and nasal catarrh. The Cortina report would have gone into effect automatically, except that Great Britain alone, of the half a hundred countries participating, ob- jected and compelled the reference back to plenary session, which is cal- led for i this month, : Canada and U.S. Join Canada and the United States have found it best so far to keep out of the Union, but they have always co- operated indirectly, where their as- sistance was compatible with the policies of their Governments, When they . were invited to participate in the Brussels conference, therefore, they both seized the opportunity to throw their weight against a revision of cable regulations, which, it is be- lieved, would cost the United States public about $15,000,000 more annu- ally for cable business, and Canada several millions annual increase, Another objection that the cutting down of cable code words from ten to five letters would mean the scrap- ping of practically all the existing codes, because most of the business and diplomatic codes now in use are based on a series of ten-letter pro- nounceable words which may stand for four and five words each, The reduction to five-word limit might mean doubling the length of a cable message, and it has been made clear at subcommittee meetings that most of the Government cable com- panies participating, while agreeing to some reduction in rates, will not cut the rates in half, Automatically, therefore, a substantial increase in the cost of cabling is bound to re- sult, The United States strong delegation, which will be headed by Hon, Leland Harrison, American Minister to Sweden, Can- ada's delegation will consist of Lieut, Commander C, P, Edwards, Director of Radiotelegraphy for Canada, and J. Captain Detective Patrick O'Bon- hell and Sergeant Detective Armand Brodeur were the two added to the suspension list. Their temporary re- moval from office came just as J. S. Fraser, eastern district commissioner of the immigration department, reached the city hall for a consul tation with the executive on "Satur- day's telegram asking for inquiry into the "supposed" deportation of the 19 American confidence men whose ar- rest and ultimate disposal started the police flurry. At the same time, at least one al- derman suggested that this will be only the commencement of things. Activities of the police in connection with confidence men, he said, is but one link in a long chain of irregul- arities touching the underworld, and he predicted that, if the probe goes on much longer, the lid will be right off. He did not agree with the ex- ecutive whose members seem to think that their report will be ready for the aldermen by the end of this week, H. R. Landis, United States Com- missioner of Immigration, at Mont- real, today stated he had no records of any deportation to the United Sta- tes of the nineteen men, No appli- cation had been received, he said, for permission for the deportations, However, the deportations might be on record at the border point where they occurred.
