TORONTO OFFICE 407 Bond Building, ¢@ Temperance Street, Teles phone Adelaide 0107, H. D, 'Iresiddev, repre. sentative, REPRESENTATIVES IN US. Powers and Stone, Inc, New York and Chicago, Dally Newspapers' As- Dailies and the TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 18, 1928 "THANK YOU!" Announcement has been made that To- ronto telephone users--those who have not been provided with automatic phones--are soon to be introduced to the "Thank You!" stunt with which Oshawa subscribers are quite familiar, We sympathize with the Toronto tele. phone subscribers affected, Our opinion, which may not be worth any- thing ag against that of telephone experts, is that the system referred to is neither truly courteous or actually efficient, It is not an act of courtesy to say '"Thank you" because your employer tells you to and for no other reason, It is not courteous to say "Thank you!" on the slight- est. pretence when the words have no proper place in the conversation, It may even be impertinent, In fact, it is a question if it is [] not so when the company plainly states that one of its objects is to try and teach good manners to its subscribers. No system can possibly be as efficient as to repeat the number the subscriber gives. This shows that the operator is really listen- ' ing and has correctly understood the num- ber and also ensures by its repetition that the operator will remember it long enough to make the connection, The use of other words is apt to interrupt the operator's train of thought and actually cause her to forget the instructions given, Imagine a book- keeper reading off a column of figures to another and receiving "Thank you!" in reply to each one, In our opinion, if the Telephone Company wishes to practise and teach courtesy it can most effectively do so by repeating the num. ber in the good old fashioned way and then making the required connection promptly and accurately, The "Thank you!" scheme, as we have observed it, makes for neither courtesy or efficiency. TWO DISTINGUISHED CANADIANS Oshawa Rotary Club did honour to itself and the City of Oshawa by entertaining as their special luncheon guests the two famous Wrights, father and son, Joe, Sr., and Joe, Jr, This unique pair brought great honour to Canada--the son by winning the coveted Diamond Sculls at Henley, and the father as his coach and companion who placed implicit faith in him, The winning of the Diamond Sculls is a distinction of which any man and any country may well be proud. It is doubtful if any better advertisement for Canada could be obtained at any price than the winning of such an honour by one of her native sons, But the Wrights are more than good sportsmen, They are great Canadians as well, Circumstances took the family to the United States for a period of ten years, where Wright, Sr,, was rowing coach for the University of Pennsylvania, But when young Joe displayed rowing ability to war- rant serious consideration of his entering the great Henley race last year the family moved back to Canada so that their native land would share with them any laurels that might be obtained, Surely Canada has rea- son to be doubly proud of these two dis- tinguished Canadian sportsmen, w June 9th. tition.
