PAGE EIGHT THE OSHAWA DAILY TIMES, SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 22, 1928 CHEVS BEAT IRVINE MEAT 13-7 AND ADVANCE TO 0.ASA. FINALS Battle Goes to Chevs Meat Five Home Runs Hammer ed Out in a Hard Come Which is Taken By Chevs By 13 to 7 Score-- Tenth Straight Victory for Local O.AS.A. Entry A little variety was injected into | the men's softball battle at Alexan- dra Park last night in the second of the home and home series in the semT-finals for the Interniediate ©, A. S. A. championship of Ontario when Chevs eliminated Irvine Meat of Toronto by a 13 to' 7 score in one of the merriest slugging games geen here for some time. No less than five home runs were hammered out during the evening's entertainment while four two bag- gers also figured in the total of 21 hite which were slugged out by the two teams. Irvine Meat's ovig- inal choice for the pitching duties only lasted the first inning in last night's slug feast, giving way to Defarrarrl who finished the game in fairly consistent style. The first two men up for Chevs in the very first inning gave Hun- ter, the first pitcher, no uncersain reception when both connected for home runs on the second : balls pitched, Two more runs followed in the first before Hunter was chas- ed off his citadel to make way for Defarrarri, In the third, Whetter offprivut. ed his first of two home runs, this one coming with none on while in the fifth "Doc" Rowden polled out his four sacker with Jones making the trip from second ahead of him, The last of the flock came in the eighth when Whetter again found a slant to his liking and slammed it out into deep center field to bring in Punt and Stevenson ahead of him, By scoring four runs in the first and four more in the second, Chevs took an early lead and were never Now Out of Race headed. They played superior ball all the way and backed Alex Web- ster up to fection at all times. Alex Webster pitched ome of his nicest games of the" season, He struck out ten batters, the same number "Ike" Sutton whiffed up in Toronto, and 'only issued six passes, He also turned in a danger- ous game at bat but couldn't man- age to hit them just where the players weren't. Chevs mow enter the finals for the championship of Ontario, the second season mm succession they have had the chance at the top rung. At the top of their form, and prepared to meet any kind of pitching and any kind of playing, they should give their opponents for the championship a merry battle to ponder over when they clash for the title. As shown by their playing both yesterday and on Wednesday, they are hard hit. ting and hard fielding team and look good right now the champion- ship crown, The play by innings: -- First Inning Irvine Meats--Punt struck out, Stevenson singled to center, Whetter flied to Young back of Webster, Clayton walked, Defarrari struck out. Incidently, the seven runs scored against Chevs were the host any team has registered against them in many moons. Usually their victories leave their opponents in the lurch with only one or two runs to boast. A slugging game such as that last night didn't bother the fans in the east. It was a change from the close, air-tight games which have been seén recently, and as they all say, a change is as good as a rest. Now we know for certain we won't be the only Oshawa spectator-up at Ulster Stadium today. * All yesterday afternoon and this morning we heard enquiries as to where Ulster Stadium may be found and there was even some talk of a couple of special buses being chartered. The local team held a short workout last night and was going great guns every minute of the way. They'll go good in Toronto too and we predict right now that St. Simons will see some different lacrosse from that played down here last Saturday, Oshawa will field their best line-up and can be depended upon to make the best of everything which comes their way. Thelr attack will be stronger and more daring today and in fact, their play should be better in every direction 5 The score by quarters Will be telegraphed to The Times direct from the Stadium and any interested in the result can telephone 35. There will be a juvenile lacrosse game Monday, and if Oshawa con- tinues into the Senior O.A.L.A, finals there will also be a game next Saturday afternoon. The affair Monday, which will get under way at 6 o'clock sharp, should be a good one since Shamrocks are fairly itching to make amends for the 3 to 1 lacing Tecumsehs handed out to them last Saturday, The captains are asked to make sure they have a full team with a few spares on hand Monday, This afternoon down in Cobourg the Central Ontario Golf Association of which the local Golf Club is a member, will hold its first annual golf tournament. This is an event which will be attended by probably over 100 golfers, representing clubs from, here to Belleville and north as far as Peterboro, Prizes of various natures will be awarded at the tournament, with the main award however being for the best team gross score. A good repre- sentation is being sent down from the local club and Oshawa is expected to turn in an excellent account of herself, There are two boxing clubs in Oshawa, a fact which possibly has caused some confusion among the local enthusiasts, The club with which most are familiar is the Ontario Regiment Boxing Club while the second club in this city is the Excelsior Sporting Club which is at present by the way, looking for more members, The Excelsior Sporting Club makes its headquarters on the third floor of the Engel Building and intends to put on at least two bouts here before the New Year, Three promising boys are now in training and any others interested in the game are Invited to turn out, Jim McKenzie, George Goodall and Scotty Adair are those alfeady doing their stuff, Let us not forget to give Chevrolet ladies and General Motors soccer team all the support which is coming to them today, The soccer battle which begins at 3 o'clock, if nothing else has some beatitiful weather in its favor, and this itself bespeaks an addition of several hundred to the turnout, The ladies game in Belleville doesn't start until four o'clock but once it gets going, there should certainly be some fireworks before the curtain goes down, / How about the Intermediate rughy team? do we hear you ask? His mother dreamt the boat was wrecked and at once wrote urging her son to give up his job, Ellis admitted today that he had little faith in the parental vision. But to please his mother he quit at Owen Sound and came to Guelph to look for work, He is now working for a Guelph tire concern. He had served all Summer with the Manasoo and feels deeply grieved over the loss of his former comrades. After his one escape, Ellis has de- termined to give up sailing. Powerhouse slugging by George Fisher and a herculean pitching effort by Art Mills, one of the frailest but gamest hurlers ever to trod the Bison greemsward, made the Bison triumph look comparatively easy. Mills was also supported by co-ordinated display of defensive strength that had a Friday throng of more than 6,000 fans gasping for breath. That Mills won his game with a display of lion-hearted courage is evi- denced by the fact that the Leafs had three runs and a man on second base before a man was retired in the first inning, thanks to powerful home-run smashes by Easterling and Sheedy, followed by Alexander's double. Despite the fact that he yielded 11 hits, Mill's showing is all the more remarkable because of the fact that today's nine-inning game completed a string of 26 innings he has hurled since lase Sunday with the opposition gathering only six runs over this per- 10d, Mills came to earth after the shaky first" and turned in as fine a per- formance as could be pictured with not a single runner penetrating to third base for the rest of the after- noon, while only two men voyaged as far as the mid-station, Mills ex- celled, as usual, with men on, and when the going was blackest, his courage helping to give his mates the inspiration to hammer out victory, NEWARK WINS 6-1 FROM JERSEY CITY Newark, Sept. 21.--"Lefty" Fischer was the whole show in the victory the Bears registered over the Jersey City Skeeters here this afternoon, "Lefty" not only pitched great ball, but inserted a home run smash in the seventh with the bases loaded, At the time the Bears were leading 4 to 1, Fischer is the fourth Bean to hit a homer this season with the bases populated, His error also ens abled the visitors to score their only run, The game with a pitchers' duel be- tween Fischer and Bream, andy out- side of the seventh, both pitched good ball.
