The reports of the vari- ous organizations and societies within the church showed they had been . active during the year and were in + sound financial position, with favor- . able balances on the budget. Previous to the meeting supper was + served by the ladies of the church in the Sunday school room and seventy=- five people sat down to an ample and : tasty repast, Rev, T. F. SHARP CURVES ON WHITBY ROAD ARE BEING INPROVED Lake Shore Drive Becomes Increasingly Popular With Motorists (By Staff Reporter) Whitby, Oct, 12,--~Much im- provement may be noted at the local waterfront, where repairs are new being made to the road which skirts the harbor and leads to Hay- denghore park. At the last meeting of the council it was decided to widen the road to make it a two- way thoroughfare and $100 has been appropriated to the purpose, In addition to extending its width, gravel is being spread upon it in a way calculated to remove some of the sharp and difficult curves, With the use of the grader it will be given a good surface and the traffic which is continually passing to and fro from the park will pack the gravel hard, May Be a Park There seems to be a growing appreciation in the community of the potential facilities for recrea- tion which may be developed at the lakeshore, In addition to improving the road, the town has cut the weeds and even this slight effort has wrought a change for the better, There are many who think that a& beatiful public park might be established by the lake and this may come to pass in the not too distant future, Certainly Haydenshore, which is privately owned, has hecome a pop- ular spot for summer homes on account of its charming situation, The proposed building of a hand- some entrance to Haydenshore by R, 8, McLaughlin, of Oshawa, is one reason for the council taking action to repair the harbor road, FAMOUS LONDONER DIES London, Oct, 12.--Alfred Sal- mon, Chairman of the Lyons Com- pany, controlling a chain system of tea shops, died last night after several weeks' illness, $2162 cars, High Compression Motor EOPLE everywhere are recogniz- ing, in the new Nash 400," the only car at moderate price, with ¢// the luxury and refinement heretofore furnished by very expensive motor There is nothing to compare with the performance of the new 400" Twin Ignition motor--the year's outstand- ing development in power, speed, smoothness and economy, Advanced Six Sedan DELIVERED IN WHITBY Centralized Chassis Lubrication nly Naser Offers -- "Twin Ignition ... KAISER Prophet- t Whitby Historic philosophers have prov- en to their entire satisfaction that the Prophet Jeremiah once paid a visit to Ireland, Several reasons have been advanced in support of this theory, but the most comvine- ing proof is given in the fact that the patron Saint of Ireland was cal- led St. Patrick, whom historians declare was none other than "The Sainted Patriach," Jeremiah, It is stated that he whole history of Ire, land was influenced by this mom- jentous visit, I trust that the pre- sent and future generation of Bible students will deal not too eritically with me, if I set before them a theory which as yet has not been fully investigated, but when looked into will convince all unbiased minds that there are more facts available to prove that the prophet Jeremiah once paid a visit to East Whitby township than there are in support of the theory that he ever went to Ireland. A Little Journey In order that you, dear reader, may follow my theory, let me take you on a short journey north of Oshawa, first to five-points, then north to Kedron, still north to the fringe of Geneva swamp, where a road turns east, When you reach the next side-line, mvay I ask you to halt and vest beneath the cedars on either side of the road. Here let me direct your attention to the north-west corner of the crossroad, Unless you are familiar with the history of this corner there is very little to attract your attention. Om Sacred Ground And yet you are treading upon not only historie but sacred ground. Here, in the early days, was the site of an old Bible Christian Church, known throughout the land by the Scriptural name of "Elam Grandson of Noah." Here the old pioneer families met for worship until the union of this Church with the Methodist some forty years ago; here many of the pioneers were married, and here in an adjoining graveyard many of them were buried, After the union the Church building was sold, tak- en down, and incorporated into other buildings in the peighbor- hood, Desecrated Corner But what of the pioneers? Many of them still lie undisturbed in the neglected and desecrated corner, which was once their religious and spiritual home. It is not my inten- tion to shock the sensibilities of this community, because similar conditions can he found at many other places in the province of On- tario, but when one sees the ped- estals of dozens of old headstones from which the shafts have heen removed, and when we learn that those shafts were taken recently to strengthen a culvert on the road. side; when we see other stonos turned upside down to cover the opening of a fox hole; when we hriush aside the cedar clumps and witness the broken down vemains of old railings which oneco encloged some of those little plots, with a few stones still standing like an- cient sentinels, too old and too feeh- le to explain their meaniny, we turn aside and hemoan the ease with which we forget the sacrifice, the courage and the toll of those sturdy ploneers who gave us our glorious country, Dobbin Rests But do not leave the scene just yet, hecauce I desire to draw your attention to & newly made mound just inside the fence, It is the indi- cation of a burial of recent date, Curiosity prompted me to inquire the meaning of this interment in a graveyard so long npused, and I learned to my sorrow that a horse had died on the roadside nearby and its owner disposed of it hy depositing its remains among the hones of the ancient inhabitants of Elam Church, I am given to under- stand that since certain unfavor- able remarks have been made hy neighbors in the district, the horse has been removed to another rest- ing place, I sincerely hope this to he the case. The Four Winds Viewing the picture of Elany In its early days, and the neglected, ATE Cm Vee wT WE Es x ihe desolate condition which now ob- tains on every hand, I contend that the Prophet Jeremiah could not possibly have written his 49th Chapter and 36th verse without having had a personal visit, where- in he says: 'Upon Elam will § bring the four winds from the four quarters of Heaven, and will scatt- er them toward all those winds, and there shall be no mation whither the outcasts of Elam shall not come." Livestock Market Toronto, Oct. 12--Union Stock Yards, Cattle, 161; Calves, 15; Sheep and lambs, 419; Hogs, 100. Interest was centered in the judg- ing of live stock entered by Ontario producers in the annual Feeder Cattle Show competitive list at the Union Stock Yards yesterday, and conse quently regular market trading was practically at a standstill. The left- overs from the previous day unsold numbered about 2,500 head, most of which are entries in the show to be auctioned off this morning. Runs of cattle on the closing market for the week were a little heavier than usual and lamb and sheep show an increase, In the small amount of business passing, buyers obtained a few but- cher cows at prices steady with the week. Two loads of fair quality feeding steers brought 9c per pound. Chaice Calves Steady Calves were a steady market at from $8 to §16 a hundred, according to quality. Lambs were a shade heavier than at mid-week and sold 25¢ a hundred lower than Wednesday's bulk price at $12 a hundred, with others weighed out at $11.75 a hundred. Culls clear- ed between 8c and lle a pound, A small offering of sheep were turned over at prices ranging from $3 to §7 a hundred, Hogs at $1025 F.0B, Hogs were quotable at $1025 a hundred, fob, or at $11.25 a hundred, w.o.c, for selects. Only 4 head of live hogs were received by rail, the maj- ority of supply moving inwards by road. Truck hogs received bids at $11 a hundred. A full clearance of cattle from the yards is not expected this week owing to the sluggish movement in beet grades since the opening on Monday. CAR DAMAGED To avoid hitting a ear driven hy Edward Milligen, 75 McLaughlin Boulevard, Clarence Foster, 146 Alma street, skidded into a tele- phone pole thursday about seven o'clock and broke it off about hai way up doing extendlve damage to his own automobile, Nobody was injured. Foster was driving south on Simeoe street south, and made a left turn to go onto Oak street, when the wheels skidded on the street car track and made the body of the car swerve, threatening to crash it into the Milligen car. Modern Mothers Treat Children's Colds Externally Just Rub this Vaporizing Salve on Throat and Chest All mothers know that children should not be constantly "doged" for colds; this so often upsets their delicate stomachs and invites addi- tional trouble, Mothers of today prefer Vicks VapoRub because it checks the cold quickly and, being ap- plied externally, of course cannot dis» turhb the little one's delicate diges- tion, You just rub Vicks on throat and chest and it brings relief in two ways at once: (1) Like a poultice, it acts through the skip, "drawing out" the tightness and soreness; (2) At the same time, its ingredi- ents, released as vapors by the warmth of the body, are inhaled di- rect to the inflamed air-passages, If treated promptly, most colds, adults' and children's alike, yleld by morping to this double action, For free sample, write Vick Chem- receipts also al Co., No, 8 Walker Ave., Greens- ro, North Caroline, U. 8B, A. (By Stuff Reporter) Whitby, Oct, 12--The town council will take no action with regard to a proposal for settlement made by law- yers on behalf of the parents of Wm. King, deceased, who was injured in an accident which occurred near Gulliver's service station, town line, on May 15 last, when the motor pum- per of the local fire brigade ran into a crowd of people while answering a call, Rapid Reco Hospital where he was thought to be suffering from concusion, He made rapid recovery, however and had been out of the hospital for several weeks when he succumbed to an attack of appendicitis, The solicitors for King's parents claim that his death was indirectly due to the injuries he had received. Second Action The town council held a special meet- ing last night and instructed the town solicitor, A. E. Christian, to take no action pending the result of a suit for damages brought by N.
