PAGE TEN " Machine Revolu Surgery is London, Oct. 23. % A new ma- chine which, it is claimed, will re- volutionize skull surgery, has been placed on display at the medical exhi bition. - 'The machine can remove a circle of the human skull about an inch in diameter in approximately 30 seconds. It can be used to re- pair" fractured skulls, and Ernest Williams, the inventor, hopes he will later perfect the machine to "mend" broken knee caps, \ To surgeons it is known as a «trepanning dissector," and it is yun by an electric motor installed in the handle. The motor propels a tiny, many-sided saw at. the rate of 2,000 revolutions per minute, bh Placed on Display "The machine eliminates the danger of abscesses caused by clos ing of blood pores, said Williams, "The blood pores are left emtirely free and after an operation another cirele of skull--easily obtained-- ay be fitted into the bevelled sohat and joined by a dissolvent gu It is expected. that the mach- ine will eliminate the use of sil- ver plates to replace removed pieces of skull and will relieve suffering from expansion and com- traction of the metal. The inven. tor is not a surgeon but was as. sisted by many British and foreign surgeons in his work, HOUSE TO TAKE UP QUESTION OF FLAG "ns iti Co Ottawa, Oct. 23. -- A flag propoai- tion looms up among other things in the accumulating agenda for the next session of Parliament. C. R. MacTntosh, Liberal M.P. for North Battleford, is to introduce it. A few years ago a distinctive Canadian flag was suggested and it will be recalled that much adverse agitation was aroused. It never got beyond a com- mittee of departmental officials who, after digesting a score of suggestions, worked out and sanctioned one which appealed to their fancy. No one else appeared to like it. In the 1925 elec: tion this abortive enterprise was even a campaign feature in certain parts of the country, EE AUTOMOBILE LOANS Do eed i i Are your monthly pay- ments too heavy. He says that they have such a thing in Australia and New Zealand and that, at the Olym- pic games their athletes were dis tinguished by this special mark on the British flag but Canada lacked any such insignia, Anything about a flag always arouses interest and the ' promised discussion will be in that category. Somewhat in tune with this is a resolution by Dr. Bissett, one of the Manitoba Liberals, He is concerned about 'Canadian nationality. He will resent a resolution' in the House that, in official documents or in the census enumeration, Canadians shall be called Canadians and nothing else, Those who are now described as Canadian "nationals" or those whites whose family tree is Canadian for three generations shall be officially "Canadians." A. W. Neill, M.P.. for Co- mox-Alberni, will have a résolution to have it on the 11th of November each year, ; The Dominion, since the days of the Borden Government, has been making grants to the provinces for highways, The period has run out and the grant is being cut out. In these days when roads are used more than ever, it is the opinion of Mr, Kellner, M.P, for Athabasca, that it.ia mo time to lay on Federal aid. He will propose that the Government consider the adyisability of continu- ing the grant for another five years, T. L. Church, M.P, will be on deck again with his annual resolu- tion to go ahead with. the United and must get out. There is an argu- ment that, while a particular gov- ernment measure Way not appeal to the House, the Government should not have to quit because it is ve- jected. FAMOUS OLD HOTEL TO MAKE ROOM FOR MODERN STRUCTURE Washington, D.C, Oct. 23. -- With ghosts of the past stalking through the lobby which still retains some- thing of its former glory, the old National Hotel, once famed as the stopping place of great men, is about to be torn down. The National clung to its prestige 70 years, but must now make way for progress. It is on the fringe of the great sweep of mall which is to stretch from the national capitol to the Lincoln Memorial, A new hotel is to take its. place. Teeming life of modern Washing- ton with its whizzing motor cars, its fruit peddlers, its thousands of hur- rying citizens and foreigners, jostles rudely against the old hostelry. Dig- nity still clings to the colonial pil- lars, now painted green, but the ho- tel is like a tottering old aristocrat. The room occupied by Henry Clay for many years and where he died is now rented nightly to indifferent travelers. Only occasionally comes one who asks to be given this par- ticular room and steps across the threshold with awe. Men still sit in the lofty white lobby where some of the bitterest congressional fights were once waged, but the old spirit of the place is gone. : «.\DRITISH ARTISTY' CENTENARY HELD Richard Bonington Died 100 Years Ago--Home Now Labor Club 23.--The ten- Nottingham, Oect. of Richard tenary of the death Parkes Bonnington, noted artist which oceurred on Sept. 23, was celébrated at Arnold. the Notting- hamshire village in which he was born, and at Notting- ham, where he spent his early years. Wreaths were placed at the foot of Frampton's statue of Bonm- ington, which stands in front of the Sehool of Art, and an address was given by Rev. S. Jones, the minis- ter of the Unitarian Church at Not- tingham, where the baptismal reg- ister contains Bonington's name. There was a procession to Boning- ton's house at Arnold and a laurel wreath was laid on the spot which the memorial will occupy. The Lord Mayor of Nottingham. Aldercan E. Huntsman was present. A mem- orial service was held in Arnold Parish Church, attended hy the Nottingham Soclety of Artists. The house in High-street Arnold in which he was born, is still stand- ing and is used as a club by the local Labor Party. The interior has been very little altered. A com- memoration committee has raised funds for the establishment of a scholarship at the Nottingham School of Art, tenable by an Arn- old student, and an idealized bust of the artist in bronze, designed hv J.
