William D, Euler, Minister of National Revenue, with the object of securing closer control over li- quor exports from Canada to the United States, and thus preventing the short-circuiting of liquor into Ontario, The Ontario authorities are frankly embarrassed by conditions along the border, particularly along the north shore of Lake Erie and the Detroit River. They claim to have proof that aleoholle ouvir ages exported to the States, have been landed again in Ontario, Considerable progress was sald to have been made in the confer- ence yesterday, Mr. Euler being sympathetic with the Ontario point of view, Another meeting will take place next Wednesday, how- ever, and it is hoped the Federal Department will be able to meet Ontario's wishes by the introdue- tion of some new regulations, ra- fer than by an amendment to the aw. If it 18 found impracticable to stop the export trade to the Unit- ed States, which now amounts to some $30,000,000 annually, tne de- partment proposes to adopt a policy which will eliminate the fly-by- night rum-runners, and concent trate the traffic in the hands of a few responsible parties, They hope to secure more effec- tive control over the business in this way, It is doubtful if a ma- jority of the Government's support- ers would consent to stop liquor ex- ports altogether; but if they are to continue, the department is of tha opinion it would he easier to con- trol the traffic, if it were confined to a few large distilleries or their responsible agents, It is probable, therefore, that the "pikers," or small fry, will be put out of busie ness, SIMCOE ST, NORTH | For better valuesin DIAMONDS | Burns' Jewelry Store | Corner King and Prince, | Cash or Terms Phone 193 W. KNAAK'S RELIGIOUS THOUGHT Belief in Teachings of "Christ in You" Comes to Light Lake Bluff, Ill, Nov. 19--Elfrieda Knaak, the girl who met death by fire in the village hall here, may have sought to feel the "heights of joy" through belief in "the refiners fire" authorities investigating the Lake Bluff furnace mystery said. Her belief in the teachings of "Christ in you" came to light in the discovery of the religious book in her library at the Knaak family home in Deerfield, III The ninth lesson in the book, which had been marked by Miss Knaak, spoke of "purifying process of pain" as one of the many inexplicable things which become clear when one unfolds in the consciousness of God. The girl in the hospital before she died had told her attending physician that she burned herself in the fur- nace to "purify a spiritual love" for | Charles Hitchcock, village policeman and former actor, who had taught her elocution and dramatic art, Dr. Arthur J. Rissinger, the physician, told on the stand of how the girl described taking off her clothes in the basement of the vil lage hall, of how she burned one foot, then another and later her head and arms, Pure in God's Sight "When I asked her if she didn't think it was immodest to disrobe," Dr. Rissinger said, "she replied 'no, I wanted to make myself pure in the sight of God." The marked passage in the book indieated they had made a deep im- pression on the girl in view of her explanation of purification, which in- vestigators and members of her fam- ily had refused to accept as the FOUR ENGLISH LADS WIL BE DEPRTED Would-be Stowaways Must First Spend Month _ in Jail Quebee, Nov. 17.--Four old Country youths, James MeAtter and John Percival, of Belfast, and James Kennedy and Jack Kennedy, of Liverpool, were sentenced to a month in jail Tuesday after plead- ing guilty to trying to stow them- selves away on the SS. Melita here Saturday night, : The four came out here during July and August, expecting to find farm work in the West. They ob- tained summer jobs only and decid- ed to stow away on 'some steamer. I am forced to sentence youn to prison, but you shall be deported at the end of your term. TI hope that you have learned your lesson." ELLA CINDERS--Just a Day Dream L BE .
