SEITRIgIRI IIR on an Gavan. Aln3A AL FIRST OF SE ire USHAWA DAILY TIMES. THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 22, 1928 Blue Devlls Lose in Sarnia 8 to 1 When Hubbell and Rowden Injured (By Staff Reporter) eount by an at the Athletic Field the Intermediate ru ship of Ontario in the return game have very rarely seen, fall which would have been termed as heavy even in the winter months, fell all the time the game was be- ing played and instead of a sea of mud, the fleld yesterday was a sea of snow, and even worse than the muddiest of muddy fields, A crowd of 1,600 people saw the contest and what a contest it was. Both teams simply tore into each other with all they had, without paying the slightest attention ta the soft, cold, white substance which was always at their feet and which made the ball even splippier than in mud, And Sarnia won, Sarnia got the breaks and on the day's performance, had slightly the better of the play, But three little tragedies happened during the game which played a considerable part in Sarnia's victory, Doc Rowden Injured Two came in the second quarter and one in the third, Barly in the second guarter while running back a kick, Doc Rowden in attempting to hurdle two tacklers lost his foot- ing and when he tripped on one of the Sarnia players he went hurtling through the air to receive a bad bump in his side when he landed, Doc was out for the remainder of the quarter and didn't come back un- til the last fifteen minutes, Hubbell Hurts Knee Five minutes later, while figuring in an end run Scott Hubbell went to the bottom of a pile and came up with an injured knee which necessi: tated his removal also from the game, flome hard work on the injured knee by Trainer Cox brought Hub- bell around to shape in time to start the second half but he retired from the game again in the third quarter when Doe Rowden came on to take his place, While Hubbell and Row: den were off the field, the team was indeed in a sorry plight, They were without a kicker, Anyone who knows yughy knows what an essential a kicker is to any team, Rowden is the Blue Devils' second string kicker, and an able one at that, but without the services of both the first and second string hooters, the Blue Devils were indeed in a tight place, In the emergency, Jack Bond dropped back from outside and applied his toe to the ball and although he gave hig best the difference was noticeable, Credit to the Blue Devils 1t is greatly to the credit of the team that only two points were scor- ed against them in this second quarter, They fought for all they were worth and held off the savage Sarpia assaults in a truly credible manner, Tragedy number three came in the third quarter, With the wind behind them, Sarnia started or rather con- tinued thelr kicking game, When at last they were about 85 yards oul, McPhedran, their kicking ace, boot. ed the ball over the Oshawa line and the pigskin started to hounce. Gum- mow went after it and while letting the ball bounce, he waited for an opening through the host of Sarnia tacklers which were around him, be- fore going after it to pick it up. Be fore he could pick it up, however, McPhedran, the kicker appeared as if from nowhere and dived for the ball. His dive was successful and Sarnia was credited with the only major score of the game. All Sarnia's remaining points were from rouges. 'Two coming by this route as already mentioned in the second quarter while the third came in the first of the second half. Hubbell Gets Point Oshawa's one point was scored by Hubbell after about three minutes of play in the third quarter when he booted the ball over the Sarnia line from about 30 yards out, While on the field, Hubbell and Rowden were two of the most out- standing players in yesterday's game, Hubbell's kicking was beautiful un- til his right knee was injured while he broke away for more lengthy runs than he has in any game seen yet this seasop. Four times at least he sprinted down the field for gains of from 15 to 20 yards while once in running back a kick he turned in a 85 yard: performance. Rowden Shines Rowden was in the spotlight more in yesterday's game than he has been in any contest he has yet played, He shared the backfield du- ties with Hubbell until their com- bined activities were through injuries oy] through the broken as lengthy, When called the kicking in the last demonstrated unusual abil © he has had in Sarnia yes- | first and he went through the entire iod, despite his handicap, like a Vet eran. of a heavy snowfall to cannot be blamed for yesterday's game, Sarnia fans behind them, they had mo in. jured members on their team whose absence made such a tremendous difference both actually and morally while their lighter team on the slop: py going at times managed to outs step the Oshawa men, hawa's Line Stren The priv ine undoubtedly out: played the Wanderers taking the en: tire 60 minutes into conaideration, Bath defensively and offensively the Blue Devils had a slight edge on the Sarnia men and to come down to brass tacks, there are some who would also be inclined to think that the Oshawa half line outshown the Wanderers' backfield, There is no doubt that it would have been & merry tussle between the respective backfields if the Oshawa men had been on the field all the time, In the first quarter, when both teams were at full force, it was one sweet bit of rugby that was provided, In the first session, both teams, strong in their kicking departments, opened a wide open aerial game that saw the ball flying from one team to the other like a jumping bean -- in hardly any one locality for more than a couple of seconds, Neither team scored a point in this period but the excitement uncorked was it self worth the price of admission, and the price in Sarnia, by the way, is 650 and 75 cents with one dollar being charged for automobiles, Summary of Game The second quarter saw a eontinu- ation of the first stanza until first Rowden and then Hubbell were in- jured, Then it was very much Sar- nia. Their kicks down the field went as much as 20 yards farther than the best Jack Bond could manage and despite Oshawa's ground gaining in other directions, the Sarnia men could mot be denied their two points which came just at the last of the session, With Hubbell bask in the game In the third quarter, Oshawa again be- gan to show to more advantage and in only three minutes of work, Osh- awa scored their only point of the game. Hubbell's right knee was still bothering him badly however and his kicks were by no means what they would have heen under normal conditions. As a result, Sarnia gra dually worked the ball down ' the field until McPhedran booted over the Oshawa line and then fell on the ball for a touchdown, Just at the end of the period McPhedran sent another shot over the Oshawa line and Gummow was downed for a rouge to give Sarnia - their last point, Carver at Quarter With Rowden swapping places with Hubbell in the last quarter and "Stew" Carver now handling the team at quarterback the Blue Devils went into the last fifteen minutes de- termined to hold their own, And hold their own they did, They staged a glorious uphill battle and came out without permitting the Wanderers to score a single point against them, The Wanderers came dangerously close on many oceasi but they neither put foot nor pig- skin across the Oshawa line, They culminated their efforts just at the end of the game by landing the ball on Oshawa's five yard line with three downs to earry them across but af- ter making three yards on the first attempt and one on the next, they were thrown for a loss on their third drive at the Oshawa line and were forced to hand over the ball to the Blue Devils one yard away from a touchdown, MecPhedran carried the ball on this play and when he came up from the bottom of this had to follow the footsteps of Hub- bell and Rowden to the dressing room for attention. His leg was put out of commission but the dam- age is not thought to be at all seri- ous, And so the Blue Devils lost, but next Saturday should see a different story, Alex Park is expected to be in the line-up Saturday to direct the play while it is also almost certain that Rowden and Hubbell will be back with the team as regulars, The Blue Devils have a seven point lead to overcome but seven points in rug- by are sometimes oply a few and then again they are a great many, Those who saw yesterday's game how- ever agree that the Blue Devils bave still an even chance of winning the Ontario title, Hlwsys the Best 50 Div you notice the suggestion in last evening's paper {rom Scotty Adair? It's a real idea along the right lines, A nice cup to put alongside the best girl's photo on the mantle is something pretty nice to have. Especially when your sporting days are over, One can always look back on Jrophies with a certain amount of pride, One of the curses of amateur sports today is the outlook some of he participants have with regard to awards, The Ontario Regiment Boxing Club is right behind the idea and will take the suggestion to heart, A few more constructive ideas like that will help the boxing come along, It is expected that a trophy will be Awarded for each class in the next show, A number of new boys have shown up at Jimmie Moffat's club the last week, all good promising material, With a good entry for the district championship assumed the next show will sure go over big, The officials are held up for a de- finite date at present but an an- nouncement will be made shortly, OSHAWA WINS FIRST GAME S.P.A, SERIES Defeat U, T, 8, By 2-1 Score at Arena Gardens Last Night Toronto, Nov, 32 --UT.8. and Oshawa staged a regular battle at the Arena Gardens here last night and the Motor-men were lucky to get the victory for both their scores were of the easy variety and with a better net-guardian the lo- eal students would most likely have won, The Bloor Btreet hoys, although all newcomers to the O. The snow however had no effect upon the size of the erowd more than 1,000 people being already on hand while the number increased to 1,600 hefore the game was over, MePhed- ran opened the game by kicking off for Sarnia, Wiginton took the ball and returned it to Oshawa's 86 yard line, Two attempts on the Sarnia line availed nothing and Hubbell kicked to McPhedran on Sarnia's 86 ard strip, Sarnia in turn was oreed to kick on third down, getting the better of the exchange when the kick went over Hubbell's head, Both Teams Kick Oshawa returned on second down to the centre of the field and forced Sarnia to boot on third down, Hub- bell returned Sarnia's kick to Osh- awa's 46 yard line on a beautiful run. Another exchange of kicks fol- lowed with neither team showing to advantage, On an attempt to make a foot to gain yards on third down, Oshawa was unsuccessful and' lost ssion at the centre of.the field. rnia failed to take advantage how- ever and were forced to kick to Hub- bell on third down, Hubbell made twenty yards on an end run a min- ute r and kicked on the next play to centre of the field. The quar- ter ended with the play in Oshawa's section of the field but with Oshawa in possession when McPhedran muf- fed a kick, SECOND QUARTER An aerial exchange opened the second quarter with the ball being hoisted by both teams on either first or pecond down, After about three minutes of play Rowden took a kick from McPhedran on the run and stepping a pair of tacklers, tried to hurdle in between another pair while travelling at considerable , His foot caught one the rpia men as he went past and he landed on his side ten feet away -and came up with a nasty bump. was taken from the fleld, Gummow tak- ing his place. While the aerial war- fare continued, Oshawa tdok 2 breathing spell and sent through a buck and then an end run on the end run Hubbell got the ball and was downed by about half a dozen Sarnia men. He couldn't move his ri 0 Wheh the Sarnia men piled and he was carried from the field to the dressing room where he joined Doc Rowden in undergoing a patch- process from 'Trainer Cox, Hubbell and Rowden being business, Sarnia btedly get the better of Lhe y despite Oshawa's terrific fight- attempts. At last after a gruell- ing fight down the fleld, Sarnia drove Oshawa back to Oshawa's 25 yard line and from here, when they lined put. opt for a kick, a t seemed more than probable, re blocked the kick however and sent the play back to the centre of the field when the ball hounced off his pads, Sarnia then kicked to Oshawa's 5 yard line. When Bond returned the kick, Me- Phedran muffed it and Cook fell on it for an Oshawa gain of 30 yards. With three minutes to go, Sarnia again got within sure kicking dis tance and McPhedran booted for one point on a kick to the deadline, Resuming play on their 25 yard line, Oshawa took two extension plays and then kicked to the centre of the field from. where McPhedran again sent over a magnificent kick which bounced over the line and re- sulted in Gummow being downed for a rouge just at the very end of the period, THIRD QUARTER Hubbell, back in the game, opened the second half by kicking off to Sarnia, A Sarnia offside gave Osh- awa the ball on Barnia's 356 yard line and Hubbell immediately kicked to McPhedran on his 6 yard line, Sar- nia returned and on the return Gum- mow broke away for a nice run with the result that when Hubbell again kicked, the ball went to Sarnia's 2 yard strip. Sarnia made yards on two attempts but on their second down in the next series, they fum- bled and lost possession, On the next play, Hubbell kicked over Sar- nia's line for a rouge, McPhedran Gets Touch Sarnia kicked on first down from their 26 yard line to resume play but when Oshawa tried to gain at the centre of the field, a muffed ball gave Sarnia possession. They kicked on first down to Oshawa's 80 yard line, Hubbell returned on Oshawa's second down to Sarnia's 86 strip. Oshawa gained 15 yards on the exchange which followed and Loveless made 8 yards when he hit the end of the line immediately after Hubbell again kicked but the ball went short, only to the centre of the fleld, Sarnia took two bucks to six yards and made their ya on the next try to carry the ball inte Oshawa's 356 yard territory, Wigin- ton was injured on the play and had to be carried of the field, On a kick from their 35 yard line, McPhedran booted the ball over the Oshawa goal line. Gummow went after it but while waiting for an opening, . Phedran rushed up and fell on ball for a touehdown, putting Sarnia 6 points in the lead, The convert was unsuccessful. arnia'; t Hubbel pnt Sho xing to Sarnia's 80 yard area. Sarnia kicked on second down to Oshawa's 45 yard line. Oshawa returned to Sarnia's 40 and Sarnia booted back on second down to Oshawa's 20. Hub- bell kicked into touch on Oshawa's 40 yard line and Sarnia, after an un- successful buck, booted over the Osh- awa line for another point. The guanier ended with the score 8 to for Sarnia, FOURTH ARTER Hubbell went UA the game at the beginning of this quarter to yard | ti PUNTS and TACKLES By the Dopester Well, another day, another game. Any way that's the way the Blue Devils figure it, and beleive me that's the proper attitude to take. . 5 8 Conditions were more suitable to skiing than rugby, but what's a little thing like that in our young life, the fre were given a taste pep pro- ucer yesterday and we assure you that the effects of the aforemention- dope will be very much in evi- dence next Saturday, » * I was something entirely next for us to see two of our star players carried off in the first few minutes of play. Such was the case yester- day, and we're here to tell you that it's not so hot, * ® However these are which we have no juri which we are force a grin, where and But considering all the adversities we had to contend with, I can only say the boys acquitted themselves in a manner characteristic of a General Motor's or Oshawa team, things over ction, and to accept with when possible. They keep slugging away all day long without a let up. two stalwarts, Our old friends, Moore and King, were on top of every Sarnia play and smothered their advances times without number. King's plunging was a feature of the day, while Moore provided some wonderful holes for the huckers Jo go through, Bond and Wiginton were real good, They smeared Sarnia's ad- vances around the end like paste and will na doubt give a real game here on Saturday. . 0% Boulthee and Kohen who alter- nated at flying wing were two of the sweetest tacklers seen in action through the whole game, Believe me when they hit the ball carrier, he stayed hit! + Hubbel, Cooke, Rowden, Gummow and Tribble all shone on the half line but on account of the slippery condition of the field were given, only a few opportunities of breaking away, CI I Loveless and Carver fulfilled their duties at quarter to perfection, working the hoys hard all the time and always giving the best them- selves, | CR I Black Brown and Hubart worked well when used and are always a real threat at 2 efucial moment, Don't think the boys are down- hearted, They're not, hut when you see your two star backfield men car. ried off in the first of the second quarter it makes you feel awfully blue, But we're coming back Satur- day and make an awful swipe at that 7-point lead of Sarnia's, McPhedian is their whole team and he's good. He's by far the smartest half-back with whom we've had to play against, He can boot catch and run to perfection and looks mighty good to The rest of the team are pretty fair, but they are a nice lot of boys who can take bumps and give them, There was not a penalty in yesterday's game and that's good for a final game, make way for Rowden who was able to get back into the play, Oshawa immediately started a hard drive on the Sarnia line with Logan, Wilson, Johnston and Moore hitting the Wan- derers for good gains. Rowden when the team was forced to kick, missed the snap and Sarnia gained possession in Oshawa territory, Oshawa Holds Sarnia They failed to take advantage of their gain however BL they first lost ten yards for de and then McPhedran's kick was blocked to give Oshawa possession 20 yards out, Oshawa gained yards in the play which followed and a lengthy kick by Rowden sent the play back Sar: nia's 46 yard line, An exchange of kicks followed in which Sarnia gain- ed about 15 yards, sending the ball back to Oshawa's 16 yard line, Row- den kie on third line to Geary who ran the ball back to Oshawa's 26 yard line, With minutes go Jenki t . Two good kickers and a slippery ai was what started the fun. Both sides pasted the pigskin either on first or second down nearly all the way through the contest. The result was a wide open style of play with I, kinds of fun being provided when the halves started running cks, : It was from running back a kick that Doc Rowden got his b in the side. Scott Hubbell followed him only a few il Ee pis 4 a crack on the knee and from that very minute dated the beginning of Oshawa's defeat. The Hubbell-Rowden combination on the Blue Devils line up weakened Oshawa beyond estimation when they went off the field. In the unlooked< for emergency, Oshawa was left 'without a kicker and Jack Bond came back from outside wing to take over the duties. Jack did as well as could be expected and it is to the undicing credit of the Blue Devils that only two points and not twenty were scored against them in the ten minutes both Rowden and Hubbell were absent from the fold, Even Alex Park was not watched the game | maybe he wasn't 1 without a kicker, preasnt on the team to do the kicking. He 1 the players' bench, not even in uniform, and just ng to get into the battle when Oshawa was left Hubbell, patched up, limped back into the game in the first of the second half and immediately booted for a point when his team took ads vantage of a break to give him the ball about 30 yards out, And he kicked the ball with his right foot while his right knee was where he was injured. It was his last supreme effort of the game. It gave Oshawa one point and it was worth while, From here until the end of the quarter when Doc Rowden was able to come on and fill his place, he was going on his nerve entirely, Dog Rowden kicked for all the last period and kicked well. What his hoist lacked in height they made up in speed and scveral times the ball eo his toe went for gains of 30 yards. . All we can say, and get this--it's going to be good, is that it's just oing to be too bad if Sarnia meets the Blue Devils on a fairly decent Id here this Saturday, The Blue Devils don't want a victory unless it's by eight points, and that's just what they're going to play for. "Eight points or nothing" is the Blue Devils motto for Saturday and they are out to fight to the last ditch to achieve their ambition, If Oshawa wins by eight points it gives them the Intermediate rugby championship of Ontario. And it gives them the title in the first year they have ever played in the O.R.F.U, And if Oshawa beats Sarnia by the above mentioned cight points, the team journeys to Montreal to play Montreal CN.R.'s for the Intermediate championship of the Dominion of Canada, But Oshawa has to beat Sarnia first, One little item was missed by our friend the Dopester in his review of the work of the players in yesterday's game, He mentioned everyone but Murray Johnston and Punts and Tackles now having been made into print, we take this occasion to state that this boy played his best game in the last quarter and immediately made yards on two successive attempts and continued to plough through the Sarnia line for the entire fifteen minutes or so that he was on the field, Both his tackling and his line plunging was never seen to better advantage. A FINAL GAME TO DECIDE Intermediate O.R.F.U. RUGBY CHAMPIONSHIP Sarnia vs General Motors (BLUE DEVILS) Saturday-- 2.30 Sharp Alexandra Park Points in two games to count Oshawa down 7 points in first game at Sarnia, Watch those Blue Devils come back They've Done It Before
