The fire chief recommends that, during the ensuing year, the strength of the fire department be further increased to 21 men. He also recommends the purchase of 3.000 feet of new hose to replace old hose, a further extension of the fire alarm svstemy by the placing of additional fire alarm boxes, the purchase of a new ladder truck, and an additional pumper. Prevention Work Fire prevention work has been given much attention during the year, the fire chief states. Monthly fire drills in the schools are ecare- fully supervised, and addresses on fire prevention have heen made to the classes. The second largest fire loss occurred on March 21st at the old Canadian Canner's Building, which was occu- pied by Merritt's Auto Repair Shop, the second and third floors being used for storing furniture, the fire loss amounted to $36,000.00. The third largest fire loss occurred on May 15th at the Malleable Iron Works, this fire had gained terrible headway when the department arrived and it was of the City of Oshawa. At the rink/ fire all of our hose was laid with two hundred and fifty feet of Bow- manville's hose, which made a total of fifty-nine hundred and fifty feet laid at one fire, Township Fires --Up until Novem- ber 3st the Department has answer- ed eleven fires in the township. Dur- ing the month of March an agree- ment was made with the township council whereby they agreed to re- imburse the city for fire protection in the Township of East Whitby, This agreement is working very satis- factory and to date the township has paid six hundred dollars to the city treasury. Fire Prevention and Inspection Work.--~This hgs occupied a great deal of time, Fire drills in schools is carefully supervised once a month and addresses to the classes on Fire Prevention have been made, Splendid co-operation has been give to the Dept. in this work by the Principals of different schools.
