OSHAWA, ONTARIO, TUESDAY, MAY 9, 1922 A -- ne PAGE FIVX BASEBALL ' BOWLING CURLING THE SPORTING WORLD HOCKEY SOCCER GOLF, Ete. Belleville Club File Certificates OTHER CLUBS LAGGING BEHIND --TOMMY WILSON SIGNED AS TWIRLER BY QUINTE TOWN Belléville C.0.B.L. Club are the first to file players' certificates with Secretary J. G, Nott. These were re- ceived on Friday and they will be #igned and returned as soon as pos- sible. Leaside have promised to have their certificates in this week but the remaining clubs have not been heard from. Many of the clubs are dealing direct with the A.A.U. of C. and when they have their amateur cards returned, they will likely for- ward them at once to the league secretary. The Belleville executive announced a short time ago that Tommy Wilson, the pitcher hailing from Perth, would not locate in the Quinte City but it will be noticed his name appears on a certificate along with twenty more. The Grand Trunks are trying out four pitchers this year and at least two of them should be able to hold their own in the Central League, Tommy Wil son is reported to be a top notch artist, while Williams is considered to be a valuable man, In practise, he showed up well and caught the eye of the fans, Ferris, Boys' Secre- tary of the Belleville "Y" is an un- known quantity and Kelleher comes from the City League. A new catcher, Ketcheson by name will be used in company with "Pee- ney" Mills, so that the Trunks are assured of an abundance of material for battery duties. Practically all last year's fielders are again in line for positions, in both infield and out- field, while many new players are in sight. Those who have signed to date are: Weir, J, W. Ross. Casey, Holman, Minett, Hagerman, Smith, Meagher, Harry Mills, Ferris, James Smith, Ketcheson, Williams, Kelle- her, Wilson, Walter Gerow, (mana- ger,) W. J. Mills, F. C. Ross and Sim- ons, The secretary is looking for a last minute rush with certificates, but apparently many of the teams have not completed their rosters. Bow- manville wrote the secretary for a certificate for Chambers, but after communicating with Lindsay Club, Mr. Nott, learned that Lindsay would not release Chambers until the lat- ter had appeared before their execu- tive and returned the certificate he had already signed. In addition to that , the player must apologize for what he had done then the club re- served the right to do as they wished in granting him his release, Cham- her's case came up before the C.0.B. I.. exccutive at their last meeting when it was decided that he must either play with Lindsay or not at all. Double Duty A man named Du Bose met a girl Who lisped thr' her teeth of pure pearl, I'l hug you or kiss you," he swore with an oath. She lisped with surprise, Du Both!" "Oh, Mr, -- Princeton Tiger. Included in the list of players signed by Bowmanville Central Lea- gue Chub are: M. 8, Cook, Regin- ald J. Mills, Garnet Gordon, Frank Piper, Roy Hicks, P. A. Muirhead, L. J. Henry, Prower McMurtry, Sol Mingeaud, William Kelly, E. R. Ba- tes , J. Stark, B. E. Moise and Ralph Blaber. Bates and Stark were with the Greyhirds last year and Moise was with Port Hope. CONTEST BY 8-2 AGAINST FIRST DIVISION TEAM The Oshawa Footbal team, local representatives in the Toronto and District Association, were eliminated from the Robertson Cup seried Sat- urday afternoon, when they met Swansea, a First Division Club, in Toronto. The Toronto Club were vic- torious by 3 to 2 after a stubbornly contested battle, in which the visi- tors had as much of the play as the home team. Oshawa were unfortun- ate in their first half when they al- lowed the winners to have a penalty kick, which resulted in a goal being scored, The score clearly indicates that Oshawa, although grouped in the second division, are of the same calibre as first division clubs. The spectators were greatly pleased with Oshawa's showing and everyone was ready to admit they were equally as good £h aggregation as their oppon- ents. Oshawa presented "one of the strongest line-ups of the season; and the Swansea players found them- selves pitted against some clever for- wards and backs, who were just as skilful individually and in combined efforts. In the first few minutes of play Swansea secured their first geal on a penalty kick but before the half was very far advanced the visitors evened the count, Play was strenu- ous throughout with the forwards of both teams trying hard to break the tic. With only a few minutes to go, the home team found the net again and for the first time this year, the Oshawa team were at the short end of the score at half tinge. In the second half each side scor- 2d onee, the winners getting one past Bouckley in the dying stages of the game. The Oshawa players were satisfied with the result, although they are confident they could land a victory with the same team in a second contest. Next Saturday the first round for the Ontario Cup will be staged and the local eleven will again meet a Toronto team. Judg- | from previous performances' against the best aggregations in the T. and D. they will not be easy to | put out of the running for the On- tario Cup. The Oshawa line up for Saturday was as follows: goal, Bouckley; backs, Payne and Bell; half 'hacks. Sidaway, D. Brown and Watt; for- wards, Hayball. Sturch, Nichols, Gow | and E. Brown. | meme en | SPORT COMMENTS | 1 | | | Peterboro Examiner: Eddie Foley | third sacker last year with the | G.E., is now in Oshawa and will | probably play in c¢ne of the City League teams there. Guide: in Port Hope A$! players who take part Central League games must be residents of the towns in which they play by next Saturday. Probably after that date Oshawa, Lindsay, Peterboro, Belle: ville, Cobcurg, Bowmanville and Leaside. will be in a position to an- nounce their line-ups to the public. It is nice to be like Port Hope, pure- ly home brew with no worries about our imports arriving on time and going out any old time. Bert Booth has his sqtiad of ball players out on the diamond every evening and there is not an idle min- ute during the practise hour. The boys are showing good form and they should give Leaside a fitting initia- tion in the opening game a week from next Saturday.
