PACE SIX m™% OSHAWA, ONTARIO, THURSDAY, JUNE 29, 1922 _: | --_---- _ » A DA ---------------- ' © THEATRES AT THE REGENT Elinor Glyn's story 'Beyond. the Rocks," a Paramount offering star- ring Gloria Swanson, scored an em- phatie success at the Regent theatre last night. ' It is safe to say that you have never witnessed the last word in the art of Jove-making until you see the romance that is most delightfully enacted hy Gloria Swanson and Ro- dolph Valentino, star and leading man, respectively in "Beyond the Rocks," a new Paramount picture, The story is one of Elinor Glyn"s famous novel-romances, wherein Gloria Swanson, the wife, in a forced marriage to a middle-aged million- aire, falls in love with young Lord Bracondale, After a tempestuous and dramatic sequence, the story ends satisfactorily, The settings and backgrounds are picturesque and faithful in detail, Striking roles are played by Rodolph Valentino, A, B. Francis, Mabel Van Buren, Gertrude Astor 'and other players of note, AT THE NEW MARTIN The Milton-8t, Clair players, the resident stock company at the New Martin Theatre, are presenting this week a real laughable bill. The first part of the week 'Baby Mine" a laughable comedy is the feature, The play deals with a flirtatious young wife who "just for fun" goes about with her husbands friend and when he faces her she resorts to lies. He is crazy over children and leaves home 'because the wife refuses to bring them into the world but upon the advice of a friend she adopts a child and sends him word that he has an heir but upon his return the real father of the child demands that it be returned. They contrive to get another but the young husband] comes across both, and in order not! to be caught in another lie the wife tells him 'that he is the father of twins and when through unfortunate circumstances another child is brought in and the young man finds (as he thinks) himself the father of Brooklin Farmer Is Hurt By Forty Foot Fall In Barn Falling forty feet to a cement floor in the barn of William Dryden, near Brooklin, Arthur Boyces, aged thirty-eight, had his left arm broken and sustained several had bruises on Wednesday. Mr, Boyes, who is working for Mr, Dryden, had gone up to the roof of the barn in order to fix a hay fork, While working with the carrier the fork became loose and ran down the suspended rail, Mr. Boyes was able to hang to the fork for some time but was finally thrown to the floor of the barn. There were ahout three or four inches of chaff on the floor in some places hut Mr, Boyes, when found, was lying on the cement. Dr, James Moore of Brooklin was called to attend his injured man and had him removed to the Oshawa Gen- eral Hospital, He will recover, . » E. Whitby Council . Has Damage Suit Ld Ld 4 in Division Court East Whithy Township will on Wednesday, in Division Court, be defendants in an action for $300 brought by Robert Beath for damages through alleged negligence previous to the construction of the Beath bridge a year ago. The Township built a detour for the convenience of the plaintiff but it is alleged that he could not use it for hauling pur- poses, Mr, G. D. Conant will appear for the defendants, At the regular meeting of the Township Council at Columbus yesterday, the matter came up for some discussion. A communication was received from the Trustees of Cedar Dale in reference to installing a storm sewer fn that village. The clerk was in- structed to write requesting them to go at it in a legal way such as specifying what streets were to be considered and estimates of how many feet were to be laid. Two by- laws were passed, one authorizing the laying of additional sidewalks on Pine Avenue, Westmount and the triplets only to have his joy dashed to the ground upon the discovery that | he is in reality the father of --None. The part of the foolish wife is tak-| en by Miss Ada Burris and that of the! jealous hushand by Mr. Jack Milton. Miss Irene St. Clair and Mr. Robert | St. Clair capably handle the parts of the friend and his wife through | whose influence in trying to straight-| en out the domestic tangle jt be-| comes worse and worse. The prinei-| pals being ably supported by splendid cast.. The audience of Mon- day night enjoyed the show and had many good laughs over the strange | antics of Mr. Milton as the "Daddy" | and Mr. Robert St. Clair as the as- | sisting friend. Another screamingly funny come-| dy of muddled domestic life has heen chosen for the last three days when that old favorite English comedy "A Terrible Tangle" will be the present-| ation. Special, vaudeville numbers will be | run between the Acts to do away| with long waits. Fans are being in- stalled to keep the patrons cool and | comfortable throughout the perform- | ances. Wednesday night a rather un-| jque prize will be given away free | from the stage in the nature of a| real live babyy. | The resident stock company is be- coming more popular each week and they are introducing several new | features beginning on Wednesday | night. The special feature for Wed-| nesday night will be a country store, | the holders of the lucky tickets will | receive valuable prizes. day night the show will start at 7.15 and there will be an hour's showing of moving pictures before the real play of the evening. On Friday night there will be an amateur night and all the residents of Oshawa who as- pire to stage fame will be given a » 10 demonstrate their ability before the house. These are real feature bills and you will do well not to miss one of them. Customs Figures for Month of June Ahead of Last Year That Oshawa has gone a long way on the road to prosperity from the period of depression that enveloped the town for some months last year, is strikingly shown in a comparison of the customs receipts for the month of June, 1921, and the month of June, 1922. The customs receip of this port last month totalled $288§- 515.32, as compared with $194. 24% - 92 for the corresponding month last year. 'This is an advance of almost $100,000. But the figures for the month of Jpne just past do not compare favor- a | of On Thurs- | second appointing Dr. F. J. Rundle as Indigent Medical Health Officer. Dr. Rundle has held the position of M.O.H. for the township for the past year and he will perform his new du- ties of ascertaining whether or not} a patient is an indigent when such cases arise in connection with his | former duties. WOMEN TEACHERS Worcester Telegram: If mothers can teach young boys manly virtues, why is it assumed that only men can do that when the boys get a little older? As for discipline, it is not resticted to either men or women. There are plenty of both who can "do nothinz with" children, and plenty both who have no trouble at all in that respec! mericans ot much interested in statistic but they will ask for a good many of them before they believe the general pro- position that women teachers for boys should give way to the men.
