There are houses in S0e | Oshawa where the width is three feet. | nings. This unusual width, it is pointed out Iby Oshawa contractors, zis unfair to plasterers, as the plaster will sag in the gentre on the lathes which are so long. Nearly every other town in the Do- minion calls for floor joists below the first floor in a two-=storied house, of at least 10" x 2", but Oshawa does not. | Neither does Oshawa demand that the floor joists beneath the second floor be not less than 8" x2". Practically every other town north of the 49th parallel of latitude demands this. Under $100 | Mike Pushkedra's home does not {come under the local by-law because {it is not necessary to take out a building permit for the erection or alteration of a place which will cost {less than $100, Mike Pushkedra's home certainly could not have cost | $100. Therefore the Oshawa Building 'ByJaw means no more to Mike than the Mohammedan Koran--perhaps not jas much. Investigation at Mike's {home discloses the fact that 'one may walk across the bare floor of this {human habitation and have the water well up around one's boots as the steps are taken. Verily, a soft place on which to sleep at least. Mike lives alone and only uses the house at night. The Board of Health has ordered that ithe place be vacated but Court Inter- preter William Igel has been so busy since last Thursday that Samitary In- spector F. C. Palmer has been unable to get this official to go with him to notify Pushkedra. The place has no ventilation, no light and no sanitary | conveniences, 50 the Inspector has at least three grounds on which to con- demn the place. But don't think that this a rare ex- ample of an Oshawa home. Do you know that there are people camping on Groom Avenue within the confines of the town? Do you know that there is a home, hall tent, half brush shack, on John street? Do you know that there is a tent pitched in the College Hill District in which a family lives while the cooking is done in an out- door kitchen built of brush? All these live up the Building By-law however, and since most of them are tents, Sanitary Inspector Palmer doubts if grounds during the summer. Oshawa people interested in these cases state that an amendment should be made to the Building Bydaw which would allow the erection of such houses for say, a period of six months, while the owners would be construct- ing suitable dwellings. But they do not think that the town council should al- low them to be used as permanent homes. Do you? No Paralysis i Here There are no cases of infantile para- lysis in Oshawa and although there has been a serious outbreak in Hamil- ton, where there are more than a dozen cases at the present time, the Oshawa Department of Public Health does mot anticipate any epidemic of this dread disease in this town. There has been only one case within recent months and this, unfortunately, result- ed in the death of the child affected. The department is thoroughly inves- tigating this death and enquiring in- to the circumstances surrounding it. If such an epidemic as has broken out in Hamilton should occur here, Sanitary Inspector F.C. Palmer stated vesterday that the department is quite ready to combat any such outbreak. they can be condemned on Sanitary | | again caught stealing. Stewart Alger received an 8.0.8. call in the third and he held the Clancyites well in hand although he was nicked for several safeties. The ball artists have stated their intention of settling down to some real hard practise and bope to turn the tables on the same aggregation when the return |game is played. | The spectators, who were almost as | numerous as those who attend the Town Baseball League games, were not backward in declaring that they would sooner see amateur players in action than professionals. One of the !most plausible excuses for a ball team to offer in explaining a defeat is the {work of the umpire but in this respect The Reformer boys had no cause for complaint as Norman Rae handled the balls and strikes as well as the bases in major league style.
