What has been true in Canada has been equafly true in the United States. Probably more people have spent tivir holidays out of doors this season than ever be- ¢ fore. Owners of summer hotels in Ontario at any rate give this as one reason for the decrease in the num- ber of guests visiting their plases this season. Oshawa people have had opportun- ity of noting the Increase in the number of motorists who earry with them their camping equipment. Many municipalities, as has been pointed out previously, although un- fortunately Oshawa is not one of them, have provided camping grounds for this class of tourist. Probably few people have realized, however, the great number of young people who are leaving the cares of the work-a-day world behind and spend- ing their vacations on canoe trips. It is only on such trips that many of the beauties of the province ean be seen, as in the newer districts roads do not always lead to some pi bit of y that may be accessible by water, Several canoe parties have gone forth from Oshawa this summer, some to northern Ontario, others down 'east, although probably most of them have journeyed over sections of the Trent Canal, starting any- where along its length from Lake ullet-proof cloth," he panted as we an, "I used a new tear bullet--ben- 1 bromide----chloracetone vapor---pro- uces temporary blindness," As he spoke we were getting closer the heavy going through the field to he wildly groping figure, "oF Squarely at it again Craig discharg- 1 another tear bullet, Includinj He was taking no chances, beautifu hig time the thing fell, and as it color adel), | saw that it was indeed clad in are bey reinforced cloth of peculiar cut-- swer the Je DS oe 3 curtains rhaps steel lined, with leg and arm guards, ers, co '» COVE Above was a sort of triangular head- ete, 36" Lun wweunens day Morning, per 25 c ki gia MAN WE'LL INTRODUCE YOU TO THE MOST LIKABLE HERO YOU EVER SAW! That is the lack of facilities at the numerous locks along the Treat Canal for the accommodation of can- oeldts. There are odd locks, Lind- say being one of them, whére there are rollers to permit the canoeist to make an easy portage, but at most of them it is a case of carrying canoe and comteuts from two to dour hun- dred yards. This would mot be so bad if there were suitable canoe landings at either side of the lock As the camals are mow constructed it is mecessary to lift the canoe and the contents a distance of three or four feet from the water level to the top of the pier, a proceeding which is most dangerous. This could be rem- edied, without the incurring of a great expense, by the construction of special cance landings at each side of the locks. * By so doing accidents probably would be averted, amd cance trips through the Treat Canal would become more popular.
