WILLIAM WEBSTER, At Beatty's Store, Port Perry Men's Class Banquet One of the most pleasing events in the history of the Men's Class, in 'the United Church at Port Perry, was the annual banquet held on Monday even- ing of this week, : Mr. R. G. Gemmell, President of the class, did the honours in the most happy style as chairman and toast- master. The ladies -of the church had pro- vided a most delightful ~ supper, served in excellent style. Every table was full, and about one hundred and thirty men enjoyed the banquet. It was pleasing to note a contingent from Prince Albert; and a number of men from the sister churches in the town, It was particularly pleasing to note the présence of Rev. Mr. Nind and Rev. Mr. Ferguson. The following was the toast list and program: "The King." = Violin Solo by Mr. V. P. Stouffer; "The Church", Mr. M. Luke and Mr. S. Farmer; "In Mem- Ladies", Mr. R. J. Harris and Rev. W. J. H. Smyth; #The. Class",. Dr. C. P. Peterson and Mr. F. E. Reesor. The guest speaker--Rev. W. J. Johnston. casion, For instance, Sidney Small- man won the lucky number prize--a bouquet that had been beautiful in its day and generation. This, with true Irish courtesy he gallantly pre- sented in turn to the wife of the President, Mrs. Gemmell, having no particular use for such flowers (?) himself. A flurry of excitement was caused by the announcement that there had been a "hold-up" at the Bank of Commerce; but all ,was quiet on_ the eastern front when it was found that a couple of clothes pin-had done noble duty for Ken's pyjamas. The event of the evening was the address by Rev. W. J. Johnston, of Eglinton United Church. From start to finish he held the happy attention of his audience. His Irish wit and inherent understanding played upon the minds of his hearers with lights and shadows as he pictured life in its reality. Life is a mountain upon. which humanity builds five houses--the house of "childhood", "adolescence", "youth", "mid-life" and "old age". In these houses should be placed as the' outstanding piece of furniture-- for childhood, "play"; for adolescence, "knowledge"; for youth, "work"; for mid-life, "friendship"; and in the house of old age, "fest". In all the houses there should 'be the loving companionship of Christ and the high ideals which He taught. Mr. Johnston has a ready wit'and a clear vision of practical life, coupled with a fine understanding of man's spiritual dangers and possibilities. His address will long be remembered with. pleasure. Sincere expressions of appreciation Were voiced at the conclusion of the program to the ladies and to all who helped to make the event the happy success it proved tq be. 2 Bde PORT PERRY UNITED CHURCH 11 a.m.--Subject: 'Concerning Prayer' 1,46 pm.~--Men's Class and Forum. ih p.m.--Sunday School. 0 p.m.~--Subject: 'God's Care for the Individual.' : You gre cordially invited to worship and to think with us on these im- portant themes. ee etl PPP. Those that were at League last Wednesday night enjoyed: a splendid and instructive program. .under the direction of Earl Martyn, the citizen- ship convener. * The program period was opened by singing one verse and chorus of "The Maple Leaf" followed by a reading by Murray Luke "My Idea of a Man." = Mr. Murphy then gave a talk on Current Events, inter- spersed with typical Irish humour. Next. wag" a reading by Will Lyle after which was a duet, "Nearer, Still Nearer" by Mrs, S. Hope and Mrs, Luke. Mr. Smallman of Port Perry gave on appropriate talk on "The Three C's. of War"--Causes, Consequences and Cure." Next week at League there will be a debate "Resolved that the world is 'becoming a-better place to live in" | Those taking the affirmative are Rev. Mr. Smythe, Mr, Clarke and Norman 'McCrea, while Mr. Sager, Will Lyle and Earl Martyn wil defend the negative side, This should be an in- teresting event and the subject is one which we sometimes wonder about.
