RE PRESENTATION A delegation from the Port Perry Band called on Mr. and Mrs. Harry Hutchinson one evening last week, to bid them farewell before moving to Long Branch, where Mr. Hutchinson and Mr. Harold Hall are going into business. During the evening Mr. Hutchinson was presented with a pen and pencil set as a slight token from the band for the service he had ren- dered as a bass player in the band during his stay in Port Perry. RIVERDALE BAND COMING TO PORT PERRY The Riverdale Salvation Army Silver Band will visit Port Perry on Saturday, November 20th, at 7.80 p.m. This band is spending the week end in Uxbridge and are coming on to Port Perry to hold an open air service. of Riverdale and will accompany the Adj. E, Web- stér or any member of the band. SUCCESSFUL BANQUET The evening Auxiliary of the W.M. S. of the United Church held a ban- quet in the basement of the church on Tuesday evening of last week. The guest speaker was Mrs. (Rev.) C. C. Harcourt, of Blackstock. She spoke on. the missionary work among the Eskimo and Indians. DIED DESHANE -- Suddenly at Port Perry, on Saturday, November 6th, 1937, Elizabeth Cook, wife of the late George DeShane, in her 78th year. WILLIAM HERN CELEBRATED Born in Devonshire, England, 90 years ago, he moved to Wales as a small boy with his parents, and states he remembers seeing the steel for the Grand Trunk railway being shipped from the rolling mills of Neath, South Wales. At the age of 9 year he came with his parents to Canada, The pas- sage was made in a sailing vessel that took five weeks. The vessel carried coal for ballast and was to return with square timber from Canada. ¢ The family made their first stop with relatives on the 7th concession of Reach, just north of Port Perry. At the age of 10 years, Mr. Hern {started to work in the lumber mills bundling barrel staves. He remained in the lumber business until retire- ment a few years ago, and in his time was considered the best sawyer in the district. Still in good health, Mr. Hern lias the rare distinction of being the oldest member of the Masonic order in the district. Only last month he attended the regular meeting of that order. He joined Prince Albert Lodge No. 188, 64 years ago. On his birthday he walked about a mile and celebrated the occasion with his granddaughter Mrs. Bert. Mac- Gregor, and his great-grandchildren, Doris and Jack MacGregor. Ra A MRS. ELIZABETH DESHANE FOUND DEAD IN HER HOME ON SUNDAY MORNING Just after dinner on Sunday morn- ing, Mrs. R. Prentice, a neighbour, called at the home of Mrs, DeShane, as she had been accustomed to do. Get- ting no reply at the door investigated and with the assistance of other neighbours forced their way into the house and found Mrs. DeShane lying on the floor. Apparently she had a heart attack early Saturday night and died from the effects. She was born in Deseronto some 78 years ago, the daughter of Mr, and Mrs, Joseph Cook. She came to Port Perry with her parents many years ago, and. with the exception of a few years spent in the United States, most of her life was spent in Port Perry. Her husband predeceased her a num- ber of years ago. She is survived by one daughter Mrs, Brownell, of Water- 'town, N.Y., three sons Fred in Seattle; Frank in Syracuse and Norman in Port Perry; also two brothers, Wm. Cook, of Port Perry, Joseph Cook, of Caesarea, and one sister Mrs. Brooks, of Montreal. : The funeral was held on Wednes- day, conducted by Rev. Mr. Clough, of the Anglican Church. Interment was made at Pine Grove Cemetery. PRINCE ALBERT Mrs. Ball, of Baltimore, Ont, is visiting at,the home of her parents Mr. and Mrs. Frank Luke, Mr. and Mrs. John McMillan have gone to Rouyn, Quebec; for the winter. Mrs, Cassidy, of Ashburn spent a few days with Mrs. Parker. Mr. Walter Bond, of Toronto, spent a few days with his mother Mrs. R. Bond. Mr. and Mrs. Thoms are leaving our village to live in Toronto, having had a sale last week. Mrs, A. Jeffrey spent a few days with friends in Oshawa last week. Mac Christie entertained a few of his boy friends to a birthday party on Saturday. Missionary Sunday was observed at Sunday School on- Sunday. The Mis- sionary Supt., Miss Ward, told about an Indian Institution, which she at one time had the privilege to visit. It was quite interesting to hear about the good work that was being done there. Miss L. Sprague oon a week at the home of her mother in Aurora. Mrs, Morrison, of Port Perry, visited with Mrs. Regan on Sunday. Mr. Ralph Lyle, Toronto, in the village on Sunday.
