Canada building a fancy airport capable of handling twin-engine main line air- craft which will not be stopping at anything but the larger cities. Such airports may cost, $20,000, $30,000 or even $60,000 or more a year for main- tengnce alone, say that post-war private flying will develop faster in the prairie provinces than any other part of the country due to weather conditions, the ease of building landing facilities, ete. Already, 'tis reported, at least one civil servant of a prairie government has made official application to his supervisors for a light, inexpensive plane to use in carrying out his duties after the war, Canada's aircraft industry is play- ing- an important part in the job of bombing Japan. The big Boeing Air- craft of Canada's Sea Island plant near Vancouver, B.C., is making sec- tions of B-29 Super Fortress bombers. The section made in Canada begins just forward of the front bomb bay doors and extends to just back of the rear bomb " bay doors. Maybe this business of making just part of a plane doesn't sound. exciting but even that bit of aircraft extends for some 35 feet or a little over a third of the Super Fortress' 100-foot length, If "you placed the tip of one Super Fortress wing on a street, and let the other wing tip stand upright, it would extend above the top of many 10 or 12 storey buildings. Many a Canadian JnEpaliy is already planning energetically for post-war flying, In Ontario several hundred delegates from towns and cities all over the province are sche- duled to attend a conference in Hamil- ton on February 27 and 28. The con- ference is sponsored by the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce. One of the key speakers will be William B. Piper, President of the Piper Cub Corpora- tion in the United States. His com- pany made and sold more aircraft before the war than all other com- panies put together. Perhaps the most interesting exhibit to be shown at the conference will be a little Cub grasshopper, the first one made in Canada, This is the little plane which takes off and lands in small spaces, and is used for artillery | spotting and as an ambulance plane in Europe and the Far East. Inciden- tally, with a change of paint and one or two other minor alterations it will be the first post-war light plane pro- duced in quantity in both Canada and the United States. Canada can be proud of the fact that she has designed and produced what has been accepted by aviation autho- rities all over the world as one of the 20 "best" planes built. It is the Noor- duyn Norseman, 'a single 'engine utility plane originally designed for bush flying in Canada's Northlands by R. B.C. Noorduyn of Montreal, Before the 'war it was used widely by bush (Continued on Colunm Six) PEPE PEOIE IEEE $2223388 013322001222 000330003300030100008200%] The Best the Market Offers Your Phone Orders Receive Careful Attention TITTITTTITICTIN CAWKER BROS , Family Butchers Riu : Choice Meats at all Times WE BUY AND SELL THE BEST W.
