As the Oriental looked over the LEnglish- man's passport, he said, "I sce that you arc a British subject." "I am «ir, said the Briton, swelling with pride. "And you," said the monarch, turning to the American, "are a subject of the United States." It tells of a chance encounter with the Royal Princesses which befell Mr. and Mrs. Aidan Thomson (the forni- er, BBC Overseas Presentation Director) on the evening of the second day after the end of the war against Japan. The two days immediately following the end of hostilities were declared public holidays, and all Londoners--in- cluding the Princesses--enjoyed a brief spell of relaxation in which to celebrate the coming of peace. * * * An account of the incident was broadcast by Mr. and Mrs. Aidan Thomsan in Radio Newsreel, Here it is, in their own words: We were just turning in under the Horse Guards Arch when we were held up By a collection of cheerful, laughing officers, and two pretty, laughing girls. The girls were simply dressed, each wearing a gay bandanna, gypsy fashion, to keep the rain off thelr curls. "Look, that's Princess Eliza- beth," said my wife, "and Marga- ret Rose." And _she was right. Just as she said it, someone gripped her arm, "Don't mention it out loud please. They just want to enjoy selves and be noticed .as little as possible." The speaker was a tall, dark, anxious-looking detective, pretend- ing hard to have nothing to do with the party but keeping a vigil- ant eye on them, and us--and keep- ing up a very quick pace, too, which was necessary if we were not to lose sight of them. ¢ * LJ * The Princesses looked bright and bonny. Princess Elizabeth was wearing a plain navy coat and a dark yellow silk bandanna, Marg- aret Rose's coat was light blue, just as plain, and her bandanna was dark red, They both wore lisle stockings and low-heeled brown walking shoes. Up Whitehall they all went-- never breaking the chain of hand- grips, no matter how large the crowd coming towards them. They merely cheerfully raised their arms in an arch, and did a Lancers step through to the other side-- just cight revelling officers and two young women, hand in hand, enjoying the sights. 'Atomic Stuff' A department store received an order for "only half a pound" of "this here atomic stuff" to use for killing the bugs on a farmer's spud crop. They referred the order to the Salt Lake' Tribune where the statistics department estimated that U-235 in concentrations up to 10 percent. may be available some day at about $12,000 for a half-pound. Have You Heard? | --) 2 A country lad, observing a city fisherman on the bank of a stream, asked, "How many fish ya got, Mister?" "None, yet," was the reply. "That ain't bad," observed the boy. "There was a feller fished here for two weeks and he didn't - get any more than you got in half an hour." * * * She (reading sign over box office): "Oh, Phil, it says 'En- tire Balcony, 25¢." ; Phil: "Let's get it so we can be all alone." oro * * *& Bill: "I hear they have taken the early morning train off your route, Do you miss it?" John: "Not since they have taken it off!" them- _ 1 OTTAWA REPORTS That Delegation of Indians Visits Capltal To Obtaln Rights Of Citizenship Canada's Indian population is again on the warpath in (ts deter- mination to gain the rights of full citizenship. This month when 65 members of the "North Amer- ican Brotherhood of Indians", tra- ditionally robed, mgt Mines and Resourees Minister Glen, they had an even stronger case to pre- sent. Indians have fought again for the cause of democracy, they have worked fn the war plants and on the farms, and what concerns them particularly, they have paid income tax --- this gives them grounds to raise the familiar cry of taxation without representa- tion. But their case does receive the consideration of the federal gov- ernment, Indians recoive family allowances, and last year the gov- ernment boosted the amount set asido for them by $1,000,000, and maintained 15 hospitals and 265 day schools. There are 125000 Indians in Ca- nada, ahout two-thirds of whom are on reserves. The others have left the reserves to work on farms and in industry, ' * L] * Ipileptic sufferers in Canada will soon be able to lead useful and almost normal lives in a spe- cial home which is under con- struction in St. Hilaire, a small town in Quebec, as a memorial to the Canadian soldiers who fell at Dieppe. Dieppe House, the first of its kind on the continent, will be opened this autumn and will ad- mit 100 patients to the central building. Eventually a series of smaller houses Will be built where patients will be able to live in comfort, comparatively free from institutional atmosphere, According 'to one of the direct- ors, it has long heen felt that spe- cial attention was due epileptics who too often were sent to insane asylums or other homes where they had. little or no opportunity to lead useful lives, Dieppe House 1s designed to provide the patients with medical care, education and training in suitable trades. * * LJ . One of the world's leading "beauty specialists" for cities, M, Jacques Greher, is coming to Otta- wa from France to resume his work of designing the Canadian- capital, Six years ago M. Greber made a study of part of the city and the national War Memorial on Confederation Square was built. Now his task is larger. The whole capital city on both sides of the Ottawa River will be devel- oped as Canada's memorial of the war just ended. Included in the plan is the ecrea- tion of civic centres, school build- ings, residential districts, play- grounds, sports centres and parks, oINUS PAIN Relieved Fast This Easy Way!
