TR & hd ag rr o-- i! pd Bn EIN A ra CR ay WT A i na Sn WC ns ps Bios soso Dug LY Beautiful Anna Neagle, top British film star, has branched out into movie producing. With her mana. ger, Herbert Wilcox and Arthur Jarratt as producers, Anna has signed an agreement with British Lion Film Corporation to produce movies on an independent basis, A four-year program calls for two movies a year and the partners plan to spend $10,000,000 in that period. Electronic Blanket I" "Land sakes!" great-grandmother probably would have exclaimed at the ecicctronic blanket just intro- duced at the midwinter Internation- al Home Furnishings Market in Clucago. The blanket is a far cry from the warm flatiron, wrapped in a cloth, that great-grandmother used to tuck at the children's feet wint- ers when thick: frost painted fern pictures on the bedroom windows, and the "sitting room" base burn- er was banked fer the night, com- ments the Christian Science Moni- tor. This electronic blanket is worth a dozen warm flatirons, and it keeps an even heat all night long, regardless of frost on the window pane and the temperature of "the coon, Heat in the blanket is rigidly electronically-controlled, respond- ing even to body radiation. If for any reason the control system did fail, a special safety tube acts as an on-the-job policeman and shuts the current off. . All you do at bedtime is to set a sort of thermometer box that looks like a small radio, at the temperature you wish -- anywhere from 65 to 95 degrees. The blanket looks like any good wool blanket, and comes in a veriety of plain colours. It can be washed by hand, but not in a washing machine. It will retail in the stores, soon, for anout $39.50, Do's and Don'ts For Frostbite Cure The theory that ice or snow ap- plications are «+ sure cure for frost- bite 1s exploded in R.C A.F. posters prominently displayed in the Musk- ox bast camp at Churchill, Man. I'he poster lists three "dou'ts"-- don't rub, con apply ice or snow and dont thaw in hot water or be- fore a fire. _On the postive side the poster advises this treatment: Thaw froz- en part of face or-gars with warm hands: thaw froze hands beneath armpits after thawing. wrap in sterile bandazcs and keep clean; dry wet arcas caretully. 30,000 Airmen Owe Lives To Parachutes ---Sonie interesting details of the part. played in the war by para- chutes -- 30,000 Allied airnien owe their lives to them -- have been given by Leslie Irvin, head of the company which provided 99.9 per- 'cent. of all the parachutes used by the RAF. - Apart from the huge production at the * Letchworth (England) plant, Mr. Irvin organ- ized production at dispersed fac- tories 'in the United Kingdom and helped to set up in® India one of - the largest parachute plants in the world, Here are some interesting details about parachutes and parachute jumping: : A man falls freely at about 118 mph, but with a standard parachute he falls at about 14 mpl, 'I'lic 'chute is fully open 1 3-5 seconds after pulling the cord, I'liere are 62 yards of silk or ny- fon in each 'chute. v Weight of the service type para- chute, complete with harness, is 21 Ibs. Good to Eat In Alaska brown bears have eat. en up so many wooden road signs that foresters now are experiment. ing with some kind of a bear-proof guide post made of less palatable material, THE INSIDE ON HOCKEY | = By ED. FITKIN Barrel-chested Bucko McDonald --now Wilfred McDonald, M.P.-- climaxed his final season in the N.H.L. last year without drawing a pena'ty, a rere feot for a de- fenseman who liked to buckle the opposition as much as Bucko did. * . * In view of that remarkable ac- complishment, Bucko had dreams of being acclaimed winner of the Lady Byng Tropry, anaward based on clean play and value to a team. Instead, Billy Mosicnko of the Hawks was honored, and while Bucko had no fault to find with that verdict, he was disappointed, nevertheless. In, fact he told me that it was "the biggest disappoint- ment of my sports carer." * * * History probably will repeat this year. What we mean is that another grand defense veteran -- Aubrey (Dit) Clapper of the Bos- ton Bruins--finds himself in al- most exactly the same situation as did Bucko. Clapper, playing coach of the Bruins, is at the tailend of an illustrious N.H.L. career. At 38, he is winding up his 19th sea- son in the big time. Art Ross wanted him to quit at the close of the 1944-45 season but Dit insisted that he still had plenty of hockey left in his solid frame. This year, when the Bruins had a pleti:ora of capable © rearguards, all much younger, Dit stepped aside tem- porarily. But not for long. * LJ * Injuries brought him back into combat--and his steadying influ- ence did much to elevate the Bruins to their present lofty posi- tion. In 28 games, Clapper has yet to draw a penalty, - He has five HARNESS & COLLARS Farmers Attention -- Consult your _ nearest Harness Shop about Staco Harness Supplies. Phone Midway 0817 points to his credit--two. goals and three assists. He scored his second goal of the season against the Hawks recently--and it was 'the winning shot in the 4-3 Bruin tri- umph. Dit kidded his Bruins after that with the remark: "I don't bother scoring the goals that don't count. I get the winning ones." That goal, incidentally, was his 228th of his 19-year-old N.H.L, carcer. * * « In the same game, Clapper caught George Gee, Chicago's rookie sensation a hefty body check late in the first period and Gee afterwards. confessed: "My legs were like rubber and I could- n't think straight the rest of the game." « * i * In that game, too, Clapper com- pleted a remarkable distinction. He became the only National Leaguer ever to oppose both father and son. In his early years, he had played against Leo Reise, then with the New York Americans. And against Chicago, le opposed Leo Reise, Jr., now a rookie defenseman with Hawks. "He's the spittin" image of his dad," Dit says. "But I think he'll be an even better hockey player." * * * A great fellow is Clapper, Long may he flourish with the Bruins. He's one of hockey's finest. Street Toronto IECER'CTLT Where McIntosh Red First Was Developed The suggestion of the Canadian Horticultural Council that the fam- ous McIntosh Red apple be com memorated on Canadian stamps should find approval in the United Counties, and particularly in Dun- das, where the apple first was developed, says the Cornwall Stand- ard Freeholder. Very early in thé 19th century, John McIntosh left his family home in the Mohawk valley and moved across the St. Lawrence river to the fifth concession of Matilda. There he built a shanty and began clearing the land for farming. McIntosh was a careful man, and when he came across a group of wild apple trees, he left them un- touched. It was his son Allen, how- ever, who realized their full value, He carefully developed the apple, and founded the McIntosh nursery at Dundela. From: this little group of trees McIntosh, apple trees all over the world are descended. England Produces Oil England now has 240 oil weels, producing about 500,000 barrels 'of crude oil a year. They were drilled during the war by an Oklahoma contractor for the British Govern- nent, T - . . > Radio Fingerprints Once again the international war on crime has been taken a decisive step forwards by Scotland Yard, the world-famous London police head- quarters. In order. to prosecute a criminal, Scotland Yard transmitted a fingerprint by wireless from Lon- don to Melbourne, The transmission took only. seven minutes, Within 24 hours Scotland Yard received confirmation that the Melbourne police had been able to identify the criminal with the aid of th wirelessed fingerprint. Experiments of 'this kind were carried out as early as 19038, but were interrupted by World War II. Porous Chrome Protects Engines Porous Chrome, an invention of a Hollander stranded in this country in 1989, has paid off big dividends in shipping in this war. Cylinder walls of diesel engines are plated with chromium with titiy little pores in it--to improve lubrication. There now is .the re cora of a merchant ship whose engines were porous-chromium- plated and which has run 300,099 miles without needirg re-plating. And this included a two week period during which the engine was submerged under seawater while the ship was being salvaged. .
